Guest mr_tim Posted November 24, 2002 Report Posted November 24, 2002 antone one know what settings to use in explorer on a pc to use the spv as a modem via usb? will it just work as a dial up type modem or connect using gprs? thanks
Guest Firaas Posted November 24, 2002 Report Posted November 24, 2002 It is not presently possible to use the SPV as a modem over USB connections. Microsoft is working on a fix. The driver included on the cd, "usbmdm.inf" is not valid. IRDA communication is unstable, and is known to work on some platforms/phones and not others.
Guest Firaas Posted November 24, 2002 Report Posted November 24, 2002 Oh yeah.. when it does work, you can use it as via GPRS - i.e. it's included with in your 10mb-abuse-capped SPV pack
Guest tiita Posted November 27, 2002 Report Posted November 27, 2002 irda modem works fine over gprs, as long as you use this extra initialisation string +cgdcont=1,"IP","orangeinternet","",0,0  :!:
Guest Rich_k Posted November 27, 2002 Report Posted November 27, 2002 Worked for me first time on windows 2000 professional. Remember to get the update from microsoft which allows you to use virtual comm ports in windows 2000 to use irda. Richard
Guest tiita Posted November 27, 2002 Report Posted November 27, 2002 irda update or service pack 3 there's a over a hundred megabite difference between the 2 downloads..
Guest Posted November 28, 2002 Report Posted November 28, 2002 irda modem works fine over gprs, as long as you use this extra initialisation string +cgdcont=1,"IP","orangeinternet","",0,0 I know this is probably me being thick, but I'm trying to use it as a modem with a Jornada HPC, and have never needed init strings with other phones, only needing to set to use Generic IRdA, and *99#. This isn't working with the SPV, but I don't know where to enter the init string. Could anyone please point me in the right direction. Thanks a lot. EDIT: Sorry, just found the other thread on this, and I'll try that.
Guest Rich_k Posted November 28, 2002 Report Posted November 28, 2002 Really can't remember, but have been using my 6210 and 6310i with windows 2000 using irda way before sp3 came out. Richard
Guest tiita Posted November 28, 2002 Report Posted November 28, 2002 windows 2k doesn't come with a virtual infrared port for modem usage. to overcome this problem many phone manifacturers came up with patches or software to create that feature. finally MS released a patch called Q252795_W2K_SP3_x86_en.EXE this patch part of the sp3 fixed that problem until the full sp3 was released. it is porrible that you installed some of this software without realising it or maybe that particular built of your OS for some obscure MS reason contained the irda fix. in any case as they say, you dont look in the mouth of a given horse...
Guest Posted November 28, 2002 Report Posted November 28, 2002 what OS does your jornada use? The Jornada is the 728 (the one with a proper keyboard - I can highly recommend it BTW), and uses the Handheld PC OS, rather than the more popular Pocket PC.
Guest tiita Posted November 28, 2002 Report Posted November 28, 2002 in handheld pc 2k, when you are creating a new dial up connection, after you select the modem click on configure on the nxet pop up menu select call options at the bottom there's an extra setting field. enter the apn there
Guest tiita Posted November 28, 2002 Report Posted November 28, 2002 sorry the + cgdcont string
Guest Beardyboy Posted March 28, 2003 Report Posted March 28, 2003 I'm probably just being paranoid, but when I do this, this icon in the top left changes to the two arrows as if it's dialled up and I'm being charged for the phone call. Oh, and the All-locations GPRS counter stops counting.
Guest tiita Posted March 28, 2003 Report Posted March 28, 2003 u get the 2 arrows (phone bug maybe?) but if you are dialling *99# you are connecting to gprs
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted March 28, 2003 Report Posted March 28, 2003 I get the two arrows on dialing *99#. Orange Wirefree assure me i am connecting through GPRS though....
Guest Beardyboy Posted March 28, 2003 Report Posted March 28, 2003 Must be a phone bug/feature then. Thanks for the replies, now I wonder whether it's gonna be fast enough to play Everquest on the laptop in the car...
Guest tiita Posted March 28, 2003 Report Posted March 28, 2003 yes, sorry i didn't express myself correctly when you connect to gprs you get the 2 arrows.it's just normal even though it may be confusing you do connect to gprs though
Guest phdutton Posted March 29, 2003 Report Posted March 29, 2003 I've been using my SPV as a USB modem for ages, and am posting this message through my SPV, as a USB modem on my desktop machine.
Guest ptwilliams Posted March 30, 2003 Report Posted March 30, 2003 Im having terrible trouble using the SPV as a USB modem through the cradle and my laptop. I have the USBMDM-5.inf file on the computer. When I plug in the cradle and phone the PC appears with an Unknown USB device has been attached. When you do a driver search and manually choose the driver, a message appears saying that file contains no information about your hardware. Im stuck - big style. Could someone do a post where the attach the correct driver file and an idiots guide to getting it working... PLEASE !!

Guest Paul [MVP] Posted February 14, 2006 Report Posted February 14, 2006 The WAP connection includes use of a HTTP proxy. If you have a device where you can set the browser to use a HTTP proxy (e.g. a Windows Smartphone), then you can enjoy free web access (including server activesync), but not POP3/IMAP mail etc. P
