Guest Posted July 17, 2003 Report Posted July 17, 2003 This is a personal opinion: - Without better PDA functionality, the SPV/E100 is as goos as dead - as a PDA it's functions are seriously limited by the OS, and as a phone it's too complicated for Mr. Nokia. I bought my SPV in an attempt to combine my Nokia 8310 and PocketPC - the early hype suggested it would do this. But software certification and limitations in the OS, preventing applications like spredsheets and financial software from being developed, have proved otherwise. The SPV/E100 is a glorified gaming machine with the added funtionality of MS Outlook synching - thats' about it. Pioneering MS Smartphone users (i.e. SPV users) like myself should feel very let down now that our SPVs are obsolete. For this reason I will not subscribe to Orange again, or buy another Smartphone, unless the OS is seriously improved. I have wasted so much money on software in the hope that this platform would go somewhere. Now I've given up - my Orange SIM is in my 8310 and I have a Sony Ericsson P800 which despite its faults, is a serious attempt at a Smarthopne/PDA and will be perfected in time. I'd be interested to hear what others have to say.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted July 17, 2003 Report Posted July 17, 2003 Could you not have added this to the "SPV NO GOOD" thread?
Guest Posted July 17, 2003 Report Posted July 17, 2003 It is good, just not good enough. I have persevered since December before finally giving up. I don't expect to get any support here - just wanted to express my views. Isn't that what forums are for?
Guest Pagemakers Posted July 17, 2003 Report Posted July 17, 2003 I agree the platform is far from perfect but I am convinced it is the best available at the moment. If Microsoft were solely responsible for the software updates I think the OS would be far closer to perfect than the situation it is in now. When I Play with my mates phones I quietly chuckle to myself at how horrid and basic they actually are!

I've voiced my opinions of the SPV and SP OS a hundred times before. /out
Guest McHale Posted July 17, 2003 Report Posted July 17, 2003 so... you'll be selling your SPV then? I'll take it! -Mc
Guest midnight Posted July 17, 2003 Report Posted July 17, 2003 i'd say windows mobile 2003 pocketpc's are the perfect combination of pda/mobile, forget the p800, xda did this ages ago and is a great little device. but thats what they are, proper pda's, could you seriously go pubbing and clubbing with a p800 in your pocket???? the spv is a phone with some pda functionality, apps will happen, especially with the arrival of the next os and its .net framework. Like mono said, this argument is getting a little stale, some of us know what the phone is capable of and can foresee the types of app that will be available eventually, they just take time thats all. to say its a glorified games machine with outlook syncing is a little narrow-minded
Guest Hax Posted July 17, 2003 Report Posted July 17, 2003 I have a Sony Ericsson P800 which despite its faults, is a serious attempt at a Smarthopne/PDA and will be perfected in time. I like this bit - "will be perfected in time" - you are effectively saying the same about the P800 as you are about the SPV..... Why give the P800 a chance to mature when you don't give the SPV chance :? Hax
Guest Posted July 17, 2003 Report Posted July 17, 2003 Yes it's for sale if anyone's interested - got a 128MB SD card, extra Krussell leather case as well as all the original packaging and contents. Any offers?
Guest Posted July 17, 2003 Report Posted July 17, 2003 And Hax the P800 does have its faults, but it's more like a PDA than the SPV, which suits my needs more, and it's also small enough to take out clubbing! Much more practical than the XDA. There's a huge amount of Symbian software around, much of it stemming from the hugely-successful Psion days. Don't get me wrong I LOVED my SPV, used it to its full potential, loved its form factor but it's not enough for me. Sorry guys.

Sorry guys. this comment i aint bothered about, but you titled this thread 'smartphone as good as dead', how can you say that when its only been available for 6 months? its the first revision of the software, its flawed, as was the first symbian devices (and even now they are sill flawed), this phone will never be a pda admittedly, and it isnt trying to be a full pda which is obvious cos of lack of touchscreen. maybe you should have titled the thread 'the spv isnt enough for me i need a full pda with touchscreen', or better still, why post at all? all it invites is comments like mine, if you dont like it buy something else, which is what you've done, so why tell everyone :)
Guest Brody Posted July 17, 2003 Report Posted July 17, 2003 But software certification and limitations in the OS, preventing applications like spredsheets and financial software from being developed, have proved otherwise. In the most polite way i can say the following, i feel that .NET will bring a few people back to the smartphone platform that previosuly left it :) I know that .NET will open developing to me as I don't know C i'm afraid!
Guest Hax Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 'C' is good, C++ better and C# - well I'm undecided on that.... But Visual Basic is the root of all things evil  Hax
Guest ashley.flynn Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 .net is great no matter what language you use
Guest morpheus2702 Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 Like Midnight says, the title of this thread is a complete misnomer. It is the simplest thing in the world to say something provocative... not so easy to back it up.
Guest Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 Hell hath no fury like an SPV user scorned! Like I said it was my personal opinion. I'm sure you all love your phones, it just doesn't do what I expected it to, and now it's out of date already. It wasn't my intention to provoke flaming, I believe my comments were valid. Each to their own I guess. I'll keep an eye on this forum and on CoolSmartphone in the hope that you will all prove me wrong. Kind regards.
Guest DamianJauregui Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 I have to add in my 2c here, personally I think the SPV's form factor sucks. Can't wait for the Mitac. I also switched from an 8310 / iPAQ to the SPV. I love my 8310, but found the iPAQ just too big for carrying around all the time, but I also needed something better that the 8310's calendar and also wanted email on the move. I can not get rid of the SPV now. I rely on it wat too much, especially the whole contact sync with outlook. Damian.
Guest morpheus2702 Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 The SPV being out of date? Umm, any technology is out of date the day it is released. At least you can update the OS! :) No problem with personal opinions - but naming a thread 'SMARTPHONE AS GOOD AS DEAD' hardly indicates that. Still, each their own. The form factor is a problem that all phones with a large screen and high power consumption face. One solution is the flip design but that is not to everyone's taste. Compare the SPV to the 7650, 3650 and P800 to get a fair take on size and chunkiness. I liked sticking my old T68i in my top pocket but hey, for what the SPV can do, its a compromise I accept.
Guest DamianJauregui Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 Compare the SPV to the 7650, 3650 and P800 to get a fair take on size and chunkiness. Here here Morpheus. I regulary compare my SPV to all the other guys handsets. They all have opinions about why there's are better, but the P800 is the only serious contender. I dismiss the 7650 because it might have all these cool capabilities, but what's the point if there's no memory for it! Talk about oversight... :)
Guest Myke Posted July 19, 2003 Report Posted July 19, 2003 The SPV/E100 is a glorified gaming machine with the added funtionality of MS Outlook synching - thats' about it.Don't get me wrong I LOVED my SPV, used it to its full potential hmm... something doesnt add up here....
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted July 20, 2003 Report Posted July 20, 2003 I have an SPV, an e100, an XDA, a P800 and a 3650. My handset I use every day, without fail, is my e100, all the rest have flaws that really stop me using them as a main device. What more can I say? :) P
Guest morpheus2702 Posted July 20, 2003 Report Posted July 20, 2003 What more can I say? Ummm, "My garden is a little place called Norfolk"? That's a lot of Brightware Paul!!!
Guest morpheus2702 Posted July 20, 2003 Report Posted July 20, 2003 I love my gadgets too but that is just an extravagence... I just hope you have an indecently large income, rather than no social life!
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted July 20, 2003 Report Posted July 20, 2003 If only... An indecently empty bank account perhaps  P
