Guest DeeTee Posted July 17, 2003 Report Posted July 17, 2003 I run an unlocked Orange SPV on a UK Vodafone monthly contract, my problem is: When I got the SPV I contacted Vodafone to enable GPRS, this they said they would do immediately. After 3 weeks and two more calls to Vodafone to confirm that GPRS was switched on I still do not get the big G sign in the status bar. However, I was in Jersey, Channel Islands over the weekend and because I have roaming enabled the phone automatically connected to 'JT GPRS' and lo and behold I got the big G in the status bar. On my return to the UK and back on Vodafone - no big G on the status bar - can anybody shed any light on why I don't get GPRS in the UK? P.S. I have set my phone up with the GPRS settings and it won't connect to the Internet, WAP or MMS (probably beacause it is not seeing the GPRS network), my SIM card is five years old and has been in a Nokia 3210, 5510, 6210 and a 8210, does that make any difference?
Guest MECX Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 VODA has been down apprantly see here http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=86873
Guest DeeTee Posted July 20, 2003 Report Posted July 20, 2003 Thanks, I know Vodafone has been down, but a friend who has a Vodafone monthly account has the big G, I don't. I don't think Vodafone being off line for 9 days is the problem, I've had this problem now for over three weeks. Any other ideas.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted July 20, 2003 Report Posted July 20, 2003 When they activated it did you get a SIM update? As I presume its the same as Orange and you need the update to get the G to appear.
Guest martin Posted July 20, 2003 Report Posted July 20, 2003 When I got the SPV I contacted Vodafone to enable GPRS, this they said they would do immediately. After 3 weeks and two more calls to Vodafone to confirm that GPRS was switched on I still do not get the big G sign in the status bar. There are 2 possibilities that I can think of for no G in the display. 1. You are unable to access your SGSN (Serving GPRS Node). This could be due to a failure in the BSS part of GPRS network or it could be a fault in the SGSN itself. Since you have travelled about and attempted GPRS access on different cells and GSN nodes then its doubtful that any of these are the cause. Also this is not something that would last 3 weeks as many other people would experiencing this problem. 2. GPRS is not activated on your Vodafone UK subscriber record. That is, you are successfully accessing the SGSN but you are unable to complete a GPRS attach. When first accessing the GPRS network your (HLR) subscriber information must be checked to confirm that GPRS access is allowed. Note: The Big G has nothing to do with the GPRS phone settings or phone type and if Vodafone have activated GPRS in your subsriber details then it should appear regardless. Its a bit like successfully accessing a mobile GSM network and Vodafone being shown on the display. It sound like your subscriber record is not being updated in the network - even after 3 attempts :? I would take the SIM out of your phone and write down the SIM number and then phone customer services and confirm that ALL your details are correct on their customer account. After 3 weeks and 3 attempts then its maybe time to ask them to forward this to their technical support dept. Hope you get it sorted.
Guest DeeTee Posted July 23, 2003 Report Posted July 23, 2003 Thanks for the advice and sorry for delay in replying. I will try your suggestion and maybe I can finally get this sorted. BFN
