Guest Pagemakers Posted July 17, 2003 Report Posted July 17, 2003 Anyone with the Flexis rubber keyboard.... Is it true you have to manually set your phone's back light to on when typing with the keypad or has there been an updated driver to fix the problem?
Guest Gorskar Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 there is an option in the driver which will keep the LCD on. The backlight still seems to turn off when not in use though, although the LCD stays on, so you can still see it in bright light.
Guest Pagemakers Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 When you start to type does it turn on again? When you disconnect the keyboard does the back light return to normal?
Guest Pagemakers Posted July 19, 2003 Report Posted July 19, 2003 Any one? I have written to the suppliers and they haven't bothered to respond!
Guest Gorskar Posted July 19, 2003 Report Posted July 19, 2003 When you start to type does it turn on again? When you disconnect the keyboard does the back light return to normal? Yes, and Yes (although if you go to the settings menu to change backlight options obviously disconnecting/reconnecting keyboard doesnt change these)
Guest Pagemakers Posted July 20, 2003 Report Posted July 20, 2003 (although if you go to the settings menu to change backlight options obviously disconnecting/reconnecting keyboard doesn't change these) So if I don't touch my phone at ll and just plug in the keyboard it will turn the backlight on whist I type and return it back to normal when I remove the keyboard? Sorry for being so pedantic. I just want to get this right before I buy. Another question: Coolsmartphone reviewed the keyboard and they say you must select 123 mode on the phone before typing numbers - Surely not? They go on to say, the keyboard icon runs in the phone's taskbar. Does that mean you must run a driver program after turning the phone off and prior to plugging the keyboard in? Finally, are there several different retailers who sell this product or just the one?
Guest Gorskar Posted July 20, 2003 Report Posted July 20, 2003 Ok lets see if I can make sense: Backlight: There is a driver option saying "backlight on" - what this actually does is to keep the LCD display on, but the backlight will still go out as per the global settings. Touching a key will turn the backlight back on as you would expect. Removing the keyboard will allow the LCD to switch off again. You do not need to have 123 selected to type numbers. - that must be a mistake. This is a "single press keyboard" - so to make a capital letter you would tap shift then tap the letter you want capatalised - no holding down 2 keys at once. There is also a caps lock button Copy and paste does work you need to press shift then left/right to highlight the text. Then tap Ctrl then x to cut/c to copy/v to paste as usual. There is no keyboard icon in the top bar. When you plug the keyboard in the driver app comes to the forescreen for a second, along with a "didaling" noise. It then vanishes, and you use the keyboard as normal (note you can also access the driver app from the accesories menu) When you unplug the keyboard you get the same "didaling" noise. Although the keyboard itself makes no noise you can set a driver option to sound a little click noise on every keypress (which I find useful) I don't know the best place to buy it, as I got mine free (friend of a friend who went to Mobius didnt want his :) ) You can get one from freedommobiles.co.uk, ora.co.uk or orange.co.uk or orange shops. There might be other places too, I don't know.
Guest Pagemakers Posted July 20, 2003 Report Posted July 20, 2003 Thank you. You say "Touching a key will turn the backlight back on as you would expect". Do you mean a phone key or a keyboard key? Surely, you are forever turning the backlight on and off? Am I getting mixed up with keyboard backlight and LCD screen? Interestingly, OrangeSP replied to my email with the following (which is slightly different to what you say): Does the Flexis keyboard now come with a smartphone specific driver? [not as yet, we are working on it, any update will appear on the website] Do I need to turn the backlight on my phone permanently when using the keyboard? [yes, or tap a key on the phone, I tap the direction button - right. I've created a shortcut to settings (speed dial option) to make it easier to change the backlight option off and on] Do I need to set my phone to 123 mode if I want to type numbers? [The number keys, as default, work the same as the phones keypad. To make it easy to type numbers you need to switch to 123 mode, otherwise, the other keys act as expected] Just occurred to me - are we talking about the same keyboard.....the white rubber one, not the black fabric one? None of the outlets you suggest sell the Flexis keyboard. Orangesp do but they are out of stock.
Guest Gorskar Posted July 20, 2003 Report Posted July 20, 2003        er... damn... Guest scaryscotsman Posted July 21, 2003 Report Posted July 21, 2003 Hi everyone, Can I ask which key board you would recommend as bieng the best? Been thinking about the black one as it has the holder for the phone but I am now also considering the rubber flexis one too? Has anyone tried them both and can make a judgement? Many thanks.
Guest Pagemakers Posted August 6, 2003 Report Posted August 6, 2003 Just had my Flexis delivered this morning. The keyboard works really well however there are some very annoying bugs that need to be sorted out. 1 - The backlight should illuminate as you type and not keep turning off. You should not have to set the backlight on your phone. 2 - You should be able to type numbers and symbols without having to manually select 123 mode on your phone. 3 - The keyboard should be able to control the phone's soft menu keys. I would give the actual keyboard 10/10 but the driver software just 3/10. It really does need to be sorted.
Guest vijay555 Posted August 6, 2003 Report Posted August 6, 2003 Pagemakers - what the key press like? can you type at a fair speed compared to a normal kbd? I find typing on the black one like typing on a boobie - too soft, there's no definite feedback and fairly hit and miss. Am interested in buying the rubber kbd, but wonder if it's just worth waiting for that infrared one with the mirror thing. They've got drivers for pretty much everything - wonder if their IPAQ driver would work with the SPV like the rubber one... V
Guest Pagemakers Posted August 6, 2003 Report Posted August 6, 2003 Vijay, the actual keyboard is a joy to use. Very easy to type with and FAR better than that keyboard that looks like it's been made out of a pair of knickers! The drivers let this product down as I have stated above. If the suppliers address this issue then I would wholeheartedly recommend this product.
Guest idoru Posted August 18, 2003 Report Posted August 18, 2003 I have to agree with Pagemaker on this. The keyboard in it's self is fantastic but the drivers are in a nutshell pure crap. I reckon the drivers were rushed in order to benefit from the release of the smartphone. I really do hope they release an update version of the drivers soon enough. However, I must say the keyboard in itself is very innovative and really a super piece of engineering. I love using it despite the let down with the drivers.
Guest idoru Posted August 18, 2003 Report Posted August 18, 2003 When the keyboard is plugged in or unplugged periodically the FX100 driver splash screen pops up. Its stays there unless hit the home key on the phone. It pops up even when I am typing with the keyboard :-( Anyone else have this problem with the drivers?
Guest Pagemakers Posted August 18, 2003 Report Posted August 18, 2003 I think you must press enter on the keyboard and not the phone to permanently remove the splash screen. Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest idoru Posted August 19, 2003 Report Posted August 19, 2003 Excellent! I appreciated that help - the splash screen popping up was very annoying!
