Welcome to the site ;)

Just to let you know Symbian phones are not classed as Smartphones :)

it would be better to have a Symbian section to save confusion.

it's amazing how everybody let Microsoft pick such a confusing name

Smartphone is a brand name ;)

so for symbian phones it could be better to name them "quite clever phones when they work" :)

Yes sure.

Smartphone is a brand name, not to be confused with other OS or phones.

I've certainly read articles that use the term "smartphone" but that do not refer only to MS based Smartphones, but those phone that offer a little more than just the ability to make phone calls.

Although MS might have chosen this for a brand name, I can see them losing it pretty soon and I think they can too as Smartphone 2003 is to be marketed under another name IIRC.

I'm sure that a little while ago, MS took a company to court over the name of it's product: "Lindows" a cross between Linux and Windows. MS tried claiming that the name was too close to their Windows "brand" name. If memory serves, there were problems determining if "Windows" is a copyrightable/trademarkable name as it is a generic term. Upshot is that MS might lose the rights to the "Windows" name. I'm guessing they don't want the same to happen with the Smartphone name.....

EDIT: Just found said article - have a looky here

To clear up any confusion (and possibly add more!):

"Smartphone" is a trade mark relating to phones that use a Microsoft OS.

"smartphone" (note the small "s" ) has been used by many journalists as a generic term to cover phones that have additional features over a standard handset; generally anything which can run third party software.

It’s similar to “The Conservative Party” and “conservative politics”.

So a phone running a Symbian OS could be called a smartphone, but couldn’t be called a Smartphone.

For clarity it’s probably best to call each phone by it’s OS, so Smartphone and Symbian in this case.
