GPRS - help!!.....

To add another question to the continuing saga and confusion about Orange GPRS.

As I see it, to access solely WAP (to take advantage of the £4 a month deal), I go into Internet Explorer, and into options, connections and change it from 'The Internet' to 'WAP Network'. Please would someone confirm that this is correct. I don't fancy having to pay excessive GPRS charges.

Yep, I reckon that should do it.

From what I can gather (checked by logging into the GPRS node)

The 'Internet Connection' is used for access to both HTML and WML pages using HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol)

The 'WAP connection' is used for access to WML pages only using WSP (Wireless Session Protocol)

If you untick 'auto detect and set IE to WAP Network then it will only use the WAP connection and it will always use WSP regardless of whether HTTP or WSP is used in the address.

Another good idea is to install WebWapSelect.

As things stand I am yet to decide whether to use WAP over standard dial up connection or over GPRS. Any idea how I can check how to switch between the two. Under Data connections, under WAP connection, there appears to be a choice of two which I could use, Orange WAP and Orange CSD WAP. If i do not want GPRS it looks like i would use Orange CSD WAP as it's looks to be a dial up connection. If i want GPRS it looks like i should use Orange WAP. Does this sound correct?

Further under the GRPS connection settings, Orange WAP, it says it connects to 'The Internet'. Should this show this if I only want WAP over GPRS, as I don't want excessive GRPS charges!

Thanks for any help I can get on this. I would ask the Orange CS, but going by past experience the help i get may not be correct!!

You got it, you can use the WAP browser via GPRS or GSM data connections as both are free. There are still a lot of WAP phones out there that only have a GSM WAP connection.

You could configure the SPV in many ways - even this

Internet Connection=Orange CSD

WAP connection=Orange WAP.

In IE - tick 'auto detect settings'

WSP in the address will use the WAP over GPRS connection (Orane WAP) and HTTP in the address will use WAP over a GSM connection (Orange CSD). I've noticed that most WAP sites are fine with WSP but some only like HTTP so this setup could deal with both. Also you can't connect to HTML pages on the SPV via the Orange CSD so theres no danger of getting caught out. I haven't used this setting cos I love my HTML pages too much but its probably what I would try if I was using WAP only.

Thats Ok, it just goes via the internet connection. Orange WAP connects to the Internet and then there is a proxy setting which connects from the Internet to WAP Network. It has to go through a proxy.
