Hi, just installed Outlook/ActiveSync last night on my Win98 machine.

The on-board USB is enabled in the BIOS, the USB cradle is plugged in.

AcitveSync searched for the SPV but it ain't there :)

I've tried deleting the USB-related stuff from the device manager and rebooting, the USB device is present plus the USB HTC doofer but still nothing. I have a 'Mobile Device' logo in my Explorer but there just ain't anything there. Argh.

Welcome to the site :)

Did you plug the cradle into the PC before installing Activsync?

If so unplug the cradle, uninstall then reinstall Activsync, then

plug the cradle back in.

also, make sure you have the lastest USB drivers installed :)

Ok, the USB drivers may be a bit old...

I have NEVER upgraded any of the drivers on my machine, basically because I've not had much cause to use it for anything intensive, and also I've never had any USB peripherals up til now, cos, well I just haven't!

I don't know an awful lot about USB therefore, so what do I need to do to sort this out?

Also, I had a quick try on a mate's machine, and it didn't like that much either, and he's running all the newest XP etc stuff. If the PC goes 'busy' when i attach/detach the device, but nothing else, what the hell is that likely to mean? Damned if I know...

Your help as always is appreciated!

hmmm, im not sure if Win 98 release 1 even had USB support! :) It should work with your friends system no problem. head to microsoft.com to see if you can get the drivers

I seem to remember many people having problems gettin 98 to work with the activesync software. It seems unlikely, but mabey you have a faulty cable. Keep trying on your friends machine, if nothing works then i'd consider a replacement

Hope this helps

As far as I know the first edition of Win98 didn't support USB, you have to uppgrade to WIN98 second edition. The best tip is to just get a copy of WinXP...

Good luck.

Have you tried what I suggested (this includes on your mate's PC) as Activsync will

not work correctly if the cradle was plugged in first.

Well, I got it working(!) at last, hurrah.

You might be interested to know what went on...?

I had to hard reset my phone! Which wasn't good as the problem was that I couldn't sync it in the first place... bit of a b!tch really.

The only think I can see that was different in my phone before/after the reset was that there was a password in the ActiveSync connect dialog on the device - I didn't put it there? There were no USB issues, as I ended upgrading my entire system to XP - some work involved here, natch. The USB connection was saying 'Connected' when I plugged the device in, and then I noticed 'ActiveSync' flashing across the top of the LCD - does this therefore point to a problem with this password? It should be pointed out that I couldn't actually DELETE the password, having actually tried that a number of times before.

So, how did the rogue password appear and where is this information stored? If I can find out what's going on it might help other SPV users in the future.

I pray that this doesn't happen to any of you lot! Nightmare.

Regards

Nik

Is your phone secondhand? as the password is the one you set in
