Guest Zee Posted July 22, 2003 Report Posted July 22, 2003 Anyone who can shed some light on this? I have a SANDISK 256 SDCARD and a RIDATA 256 SDCARD and a APACER 128 MMC. - Whenever I try to "copy" a file that is larger than 45mb via active sync to any of my 2 SD cards it won't let me. When it reaches about 80% it goes back to the start. This does not happen with my MMCard. - I played an Mpeg file using an SD card and it was choppy, however using the same file on my MMCard it palyed REALLY smooth, any thoughts? - I have tried formatting the SD cards again but still got the same results. - I tried this on different smartphones and got the same results. ANyone who can help me with this? Thanks!
Guest grifter Posted July 23, 2003 Report Posted July 23, 2003 maybe your SD card is defective. Have it replaced.
Guest dinoalbert Posted July 23, 2003 Report Posted July 23, 2003 I've had no problem playing movies on my 256mB Sandisk card although I havent tried copying a single file that is 45mb. Try encoding your mpeg to divx/avi format and use the player PocketMVP and see if you get the same result...

Guest Zee Posted July 23, 2003 Report Posted July 23, 2003 Thanks for the quick response everyone... I have tried formatting it and the results are the same. This 1st happened with my 256 Ridata SDCARD and then I had it replaced and they gave me a 256 SANDISK SDCARD... same results. Task Manager shows I have 242mb on my storage card. But when I use an MMC card everything works the way it should. I tried using the SDCARD on 3 other smartphones and we all had the same result. Anyone tried copying a 50mb file or larger to their SDCARDS and were successful? The mpeg file I am playing through my SDCARD is the same file I am playing through my MMCard. The quality is the same BUT when I am using the SDCARD the movie is choppy where as when I play it using the MMCard the movie is picture perfect. Thanks all!

Later on I found out that's not a problem rather a "reporting inconsistency" of activesync. Indeed the progress bar of activesync goes back to the start but it will finish normally in a couple of minutes. Just let it do its thing first. Before it even reaches the halfway mark of its "progress bar report round two", it will finish successfully. :) ;) :D
Guest Zee Posted July 23, 2003 Report Posted July 23, 2003 Thanks spv_dman! I will try that in a few minutes and will post here my results. Anyone have any thoughts on the mpeg file problem i posted? =)
Guest spv_dman Posted July 23, 2003 Report Posted July 23, 2003 "- I played an Mpeg file using an SD card and it was choppy, however using the same file on my MMCard it palyed REALLY smooth, any thoughts?" Hmmm regarding this one, As far as I know the kind or size of your storage card shouldn't affect the quality of the media file your playing. My opinion's the same with dinoalbert, try to encode your mpeg to divx avi format and play it with pocketmvp. I use Dr. Divx for encoding. Then it should be pocketpc standard. Encode it less than 128 mb video bitrate for better result.
Guest Zee Posted July 23, 2003 Report Posted July 23, 2003 Hey spv_dman... you were right, the file finished saving after baout half of the 2nd round... thanks for the info! And thanks to everyone who replied... I finally figured out a way to make the SD CARD perform in the same way the MMC does. I formatted the SD Card twice and reboted my phone, after i did this the movies played smoothly. :)
Guest BrAGoL Posted July 24, 2003 Report Posted July 24, 2003 glad that you were able to have it work... and not worrying if you've gotten a deffective sd card again...
Guest JDimeRolla10 Posted July 24, 2003 Report Posted July 24, 2003 Since the MMC/SD Card is a relatively new type of storage media, several companies have been able to perfect the precision of read/write through various types of gadges (i.e., PDAs, Pocket PCs, DigiCams, SmartPhones). It is equally important that you check what brand you're getting. I know that there are several GENERIC ones in the market. When I say generic, this would be the typically "unknown" branded ones. Companies like LEXAR, INFINEON, to name a few, are very reliable when it comes to the MMC/SD storage media. I wouldn't bet on SanDisk, or even RiData at this point. Hope this helps.
Guest grifter Posted July 24, 2003 Report Posted July 24, 2003 i beg to disagree. Sandisk is a very reliable brand and has been around for a long time. they even give a 5-year warranty on their SD cards. RiData is also a good brand. other ok brands are PQI and Panasonic.
Guest BrAGoL Posted July 24, 2003 Report Posted July 24, 2003 mine is only a PQI mmc card... and so far, not having any difficulty on using it... good for me! :)
Guest dinoalbert Posted July 24, 2003 Report Posted July 24, 2003 Ive been using 128mb SanDisk CF and SD cards on my PocketPC for years now and so far I havent had any problems with it. Im using 128mb and 256mb SD on my Smartphone. Sandisk have been around for quite some time now and I dont believe they fall on the "generic" category, in fact this brand, including the RiData, are well known good brands. I havent even heard of the Infineon brand.
Guest jabez Posted July 24, 2003 Report Posted July 24, 2003 Hi people! I just would like to know if there are still problems encountered with SanDisk SD's on the SAP. Right now, they are the only brands ON SALE here in the States. Please update me on this. Mabuhay, jabez
Guest dinoalbert Posted July 24, 2003 Report Posted July 24, 2003 I am using 128mb CF and 128mb SD SANDISK cards on my PPC, and 256mb SD SANDISK on my SAP for quite sometime now...no problem encountered so far
Guest Zee Posted July 24, 2003 Report Posted July 24, 2003 Jabez... Right now My Group has been experimenting heavily on the performance of SD cards versus MMC cards for the smartphone and aside from the initial problem i posted here it works great! Just remember to do these 1st before putting on any content for maximum performance 1. format the SD cards 2x 2. restart the phone 3. start using your SD card... enjoy! P.S. - Have not had any "qualms" with my SD cArd's performance since i followed these steps. there seems to be some connectivity issues when you use the SD card right of the box :) On a side not... I agree that SANDISK can't be placed on the "GENERIC" CAtegory... It's a very good brand and even the folks from the UK are using 256mb SANDISK SD CARDSb ;)

Why do u need to format your sd card twice before using it? I used my sdc immediately out of the box and it works great. It's a month old and no problem so far. I guess it's already formatted to work with compatible devices so need to do anything with it. Just use it! :)

Well, we noticed that some mpeg files play smoother after going through this process versus playing them from sd cards right out of the box under the same conditions. the formatting 2x thing is because when we first tried using a sd card that was formatted once we noticed that it performed in the same leve as one used right out fo the box but when we went through the steps indicated in my previous post the perfmance of the card was noticeably better. :)
Guest spv_dman Posted July 24, 2003 Report Posted July 24, 2003 Oh well, different strokes for different folks :) ;) :D
Guest grifter Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 hmm... formatting twice? that sounds illogical on a technical point of view. Weird. Maybe it's just psychological. hehe... :) I mean, if you think about it, what can a 2nd round of format do to an already formatted SD card? The only thing I can think of is that it has something to do with contiguous files. Maybe the large video file that was loaded was written on fragmented parts of the SD. But this should be the case since SDs are solid state unlike hard disks. Let's ask Grissom to figure this out. ;)
Guest mariolouis Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 sd cards are solid state but it can also be fragmented. There are several apps to defrag sd cards.
