Guest zeta101 Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 My 12 month orange contract finished today, i wanna get a new phone and im liking the spv e100 a lot, because of the smartphone OS. I would like to get it from the orange website, which offers a good deal on a new contract, but i would have to pay 180 quid for the phone. So the question is....is it worth waiting a few months, are there any new smartphones with MS OS on them coming out before xmas? (cos atm we only have the spv and spv e100) then i would have a choice, and i could always go for the e100 and save some money since the price will have gone down by then....only trouble is i will be missing out on this good deal on the orange website and i will have to wait a few months to get a new phone :)
Guest Gorskar Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 Always the dilema isn't it? Apparently we can expect an "spv2" (see news section of the website) soon with integrated camera and bluetooth. How long it is until it actually materialises, and the cost... who knows?
Guest zeta101 Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 hmm, i must have made a mistake its only 130 quid, i think ill get it at that price :)
Guest martin Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 hmm, i must have made a mistake its only 130 quid, i think ill get it at that price Go for it zeta101 The E100 has a great screen and you'll just love it for playing movies. There's a lot happening with the SPV at the moment and it would be hard to sit it out while you wait (and wait) for something new. Even when the SPV2 is released there will will be other phones on the horizon and you'll want to see how they compare. There is a lot left in the SPV/SPVx yet and when the time comes you can still upgrade to something better. Remember that new phones usually come out a premium cost and people often wait a while anyway.
Guest zeta101 Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 yeah youre right martin, im gonna go to an orange shop tomorra and get one (i asked last week if they would do the website offer in the shop and they said they would). Cant wait till i get it and i can start playing :)
Guest Gorskar Posted July 26, 2003 Report Posted July 26, 2003 Good one! First thing to do: unlock OTA to let you put freeware on your phone 2nd thing: put Task manager and Smartexplorer on your phone (essential imho) 3th thing: order a nice big SD card - 256 MB at least if you want to put movies on it! You can get them cheapest from eBay but for a slightly faster delivery try www.valuemedia.co.uk or www.ebuyer.com 4th: load your phone with cool freeware - much of it you can find at http://www.monolithix.org 5th: get a nice homescreen (see customisation section of this site, or visit http://www.smartphony.org) 6th: Apply midnight's speed tweaks. dont forget to turn off keypad tones and to set multipress timeout to 1/2 sec 7th: keep coming back to Modaco for more cool things to do with your phone!
Guest hatton33 Posted July 26, 2003 Report Posted July 26, 2003 i think you'll have prob found they cannot do the deal in the shop that the web offer so if you havent been down yet, dont bother, i got told the same thing, filled out all the paperwork etc to then be told no you do have to do it eiher by phoninh orange direct or over the internet. Rob

I was in an Orange shop today and it said £129 for the SPVx and £29 for the SPV (even though we know the SPV is out of stock). Is the SPVx package better on the web ?
Guest hatton33 Posted July 26, 2003 Report Posted July 26, 2003 well on the net you get 500 txts per month 200 mins any n/w any time free Wap (GPRS or CDS) for £30 a month in the shop you get 1000 txt a year 200 mins any n/w anytime for £30 Phones are same price, you choose!!
Guest martin Posted July 26, 2003 Report Posted July 26, 2003 So it depends on whether your a big texter. The internet 500 texts a month will definately suit a lot of people (mainly school kids). I wonder if zeta101 knows about this  Personally I don't send that many texts so I don't think I'd be too bothered. It would be an SPVx for £129 and then I would add the mobile E-mail promotion. Still a great deal :)
Guest hatton33 Posted July 26, 2003 Report Posted July 26, 2003 well i aint a skool kid being almost 20 but i still prob txt more than i call people just out of ease to be honest. Just cause it avoids chit chat, straight to the point 'you wanna go to the pub?' 'no' 'ok' simple! Id rather have the option of being able to send 500 txts a month than be restricted by having 6000 less txts a year to send!! when you put it like that i mean hell thats alot. Thats £600's worth worst off a year! But hey thats just me. :?

Worked with me. Chris
Guest zeta101 Posted July 26, 2003 Report Posted July 26, 2003 hmmm, ok i went in today, i explained about the web deal and they said that they *were* doing it now in the shops too (they knew exactly what i was talking about) I went for your plan 120: 120 mins 250 free texts open access thingy (thats free wap, either over GSM or GPRS, but not full html GPRS) for a year PLus for 3 months they are giving full GPRS (full internet etc). For £25 a month, after 3 months ill stick some GPRS bundles on. and obviously i had to pay 130 for the phone. @hatton, i hope your wrong...you see i filled in all the paperwork today but when it came to them phoning up to get the phone activated the computers were down. So i havent actually got the phone yet :D im picking it up tomorrow but in any case the phone is paid for and i signed the contract and so did sales guy, so i dont think they can back out of that. @cgjackson, damn thats a biatch, i was told you cant upgrade to this particular plan cos its a promotion, i wonder if i could have now lol @Gorskar, thanks! i was gonna ask for something like this once i had the phone :) hope i get it tomorra ;)
Guest fozzie Posted July 27, 2003 Report Posted July 27, 2003 First thing to do:............etc etc 7th: keep coming back to MoDaCo for more cool things to do with your phone! Between 6 & 7: Edit data settings so Pass-Through works correctly (check coolsmartphone for details) :)

Thats £600's worth worst off a year! But hey thats just me.The school kid/texting comment was meant to be a bit of a joke but sometimes I forget I'm not talking to work colleagues. Moving on... The issue seems to have gone from 'Should I buy a E100?' to 'Am I being shafted by the Orange shop ?'. Certainly, if someone bought a phone from an Orange shop and then found there was a better deal calling Orange directly (and the Orange shop didn't tell them about this), then I can understand they might not be too happy. I suppose I would try calling customer sevices to see if the online offer could be transferred. After all isn't there a 'no quibble' phone return policy for each purchase ? Anybody know the hard and fast rules of purchases from the Orange shop. I can't believe they were unable match the online offer :? Especially after telling zeta101 that they would. yeah youre right martin, im gonna go to an orange shop tomorra and get one (i asked last week if they would do the website offer in the shop and they said they would). Guest Renwaldo Posted July 27, 2003 Report Posted July 27, 2003 Hi - My first post!! Anyway, back to the subject. I saw the deal for the SPV E100 online with Orange, and was obviously intrigued. I wanted the Talk 400 plan, and the phone is only £50 on this. I called the sales line and asked if the deal was available from Orange shops and I was told yes. I went to the Orange shop in Manchester (both of them!) and tried to get the deal only to be told it was impossible. I even dragged the manager out, who was a reasonable guy, and he said that he can only use the contracts deals that are in the magazine, he doesn't have the capability of this 500 texts one. I obviously was a bit peed off, but though oh well and ordered it from Orange Sales. I have been given a 7 working day delay on my order, which again isn't too bad, but after reading this forum a few comments have me worried. I subscribed to the orange open access pack for free (part of the deal) and I was told I could access MSN Messenger with this for free by the 156 technical sales department, and the sales line (although they didn't have a clue to be fair and recommended I call 156). I have read on another thread that you can only access Orange services with this - which one is true? If it's the latter, the phone is getting sent back as that was one of it's main benefits to me. Also, I understand that there isn't a program to un sim-lock the phone yet so that it can accept any provider - is there one in the pipeline? And, as a final note, I can;t believe Orange application lock the phone so you can't get freeware on it (without doing the process outlined on many threads - but still!!) Thanks in advance :) ;)

This will not include MSN messenger. E-mail or Internet (HTML) as these use APN orangeinternet. All is not lost :) Call 156 and as for the mobile E-mail promotion instead as this will give you 3 months free access to both APNs. (note this promotion ends 31 July - so hurry) Also, I understand that there isn't a program to un sim-lock the phone yet so that it can accept any provider - is there one in the pipeline? You have to downgrade the ROM software first. And, as a final note, I can;t believe Orange application lock the phone so you can't get freeware on it (without doing the process outlined on many threads - but still!!) Use the Official Orange OTA (over the air) application unlock. It only takes 2 minutes.
Guest Renwaldo Posted July 27, 2003 Report Posted July 27, 2003 Thanks Martin I don't actually have the phone, or a number, or any details about my new phone yet, even though i've paid for it so how would I actually do the order? (I'm p*ssed off that I can't use it for the 12 months for free as well! - How much does this other thing cost after the first 3 months?)
Guest Renwaldo Posted July 27, 2003 Report Posted July 27, 2003 I hate speaking to Orange on the phone. They're now saying that there's nothing they can do about it, and that I should send the phone back - but i want the phone!!!! They even told me that the mobile e-mail promotion has ended - call to customer services and a supervisor is on the way I feel!

You could try asking 156 to activate the promotion on your existing SIM and then transfer this to the new SIM when the phone arrives. Might work ? I'm not sure what you mean by 12 months for free ? I believe you choose one of the available GPRS bundles after the promotion ends.
Guest Renwaldo Posted July 27, 2003 Report Posted July 27, 2003 Sorry, i'm not being clear. I was told that with the Open Access Pack, I could use MSN Messenger for free, for 12 months. I now find that I can't, and even if I get this free promotion for 3 months, after that i'll have to start paying for the service. Just on the phone to a supervisor at the moment - hopefully I'll have some luck with that.
Guest martin Posted July 27, 2003 Report Posted July 27, 2003 They're now saying that there's nothing they can do about it, and that I should send the phone back - but i want the phone!!!!What! They even told me that the mobile e-mail promotion has ended - call to customer services and a supervisor is on the way I feel! EH ! Hope you get a bit a more luck than this.
Guest morpheus2702 Posted July 27, 2003 Report Posted July 27, 2003 One thing that I have learnt is that it is pot luck with Orange. More often that not, you get a complete gimp, someone that really could not give two s***s about you, your problem or indeed, Orange itself. Every now and then, you get a good guy (or girl) who does listen to what you say and tries to get it sorted, but they go off rota and you are left dealing with the gimps above. And if you are really, REALLY lucky, you get a good guy (or girl) who gets it sorted before they go off rota. But these a rarer than a virgin on prom night. All I can say is Orange trainers? - MY ARSE!

I have read on another thread that you can only access Orange services with this - which one is true? Just had thought (ouch!) :? Does the Orange Access promotion include MSN messenger ? The APN orangewap WILL include MSN messenger if you had a GPRS WAP only phone, for instance a nokia. This may be why the sales guy (or girl) told you that it was included. They may not have realised that the SPV actually uses the APN orangeinternet for its MSN messenger (cos were more upmarket )
Guest Renwaldo Posted July 27, 2003 Report Posted July 27, 2003 Martin, to tell you the truth, i've spken to 5 people over this issue now, and each one of them has thought for the first 5 minutes (even though I know they're thinking this and making it clear they're wrong) that i was talking about MMS messaging. It's so bloody frustrating. Waiting for an Orange supervisor to call me back - think i'm in for a long stay.
