Guest tbrose Posted July 27, 2003 Report Posted July 27, 2003 Hey everybody! Having my small cousins here on holiday also means having to share my cpu with them! They spend all their time on some website where the can read about games etc.!! It's really annoying not being able to use my computer, but now I think I've found a solution for this problem: If I can just find a way for them not to be able to access the website they're visiting! - This is where I desperately need help!! - Isn't there a program that can ban certain URL's? Or is there a function in the IE controls that let parents ban URL's? I really hope you guys can help! Thanks in advance!
Guest casper508 Posted July 27, 2003 Report Posted July 27, 2003 Tell me about it mate. I face similar situation with my cousins (8 and 9) I'm sick n tired of cartoonetwork.com and barbie.com. and these are the methods ive used to get em off: - secretly disconnect and say the NET went down !! - make sure the net goes down :) (easier if u have a USB modem connect to a hub sitting infront of you ;) ) - You can always use Net Nanny or other similar software which alows banning of specified URLs Cas
Guest mores Posted July 28, 2003 Report Posted July 28, 2003 don't activate the parent-control-thing in IE. once you do that you'll never get rid of it. a friend of mine did that by accident, and i think he was stuck with it until he upgraded to a new computer. (format c: would have helped, but his machine was lame anyways so i told him he needed a new one) you could enter a faulty proxyserver. this way you'll get a "page not found" error :)
Guest fraser Posted July 28, 2003 Report Posted July 28, 2003 There is a really easy way to block one site. Simply search the WINDOWS or WINNT directory for a file called "hosts", mine is at "C:WINDOWSsystem32driversetchosts". Add an entry to redirect "www.unwantedsite.com" to 127.0.0.1. Whenever your PC tries to lookup that site, it gets redirected to your local machine. If the person using the PC knows a bit about TCP/IP, they might be able to figure out what is going on, and either edit the file themselves, or just enter the IP address in the address bar. But to stop a couple of kids, it should work. I use a similar technique to block ads on webpages. I have an entry for many of the ad servers, that does the same thing. I've attached a zipped version of this file to this post. I got the list from some website ages ago, it's probably a bit out of date but it still works well.hosts.zip
Guest tbrose Posted July 28, 2003 Report Posted July 28, 2003 Hehe, you guys are great! Thank you so much for helping! - finally I can have the computer for myself :) Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest Firaas Posted July 28, 2003 Report Posted July 28, 2003 I'm sick n tired of cartoonetwork.com and barbie.com. Me too!!! My sister has an obsession with cartoonnetwork/CBeebies/barbie/pollypocket, and it's getting really annoying, especially when you get back to your PC and find 10 IE windows open, most with flash and sound along with a print queue and emails awaiting send :|
