Guest Spine Posted July 28, 2003 Report Posted July 28, 2003 Anyone think this idea would work? desigining a cps or (cellular positioning system) for the smartphone/xda etc. If we know what specific cellular tower we are connected to and the transmitter (in canadad the cell tower has a number and if it ends in 1 its usually the north facing transmitter etc) for more than one cellular tower, it should be relatively easy to determine the position of the phone (or atleast state that it is within a certain area). If we can also access the signal strength for each cell, we can get even more accurate. I understand that in cities the cellular tower density is even greater therefore increasing the accuracy of the program. Now the hard part is acessing the radio stack in the smartphone, to see if this is possible. then the next hardest step is to compile a list of the cellular towers and ID information. anyone think this is a good idea or am i an idiot :) mike
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted July 28, 2003 Report Posted July 28, 2003 Yep been discussed before and it is possible (to an extent) :)
Guest Maverick Posted July 28, 2003 Report Posted July 28, 2003 How about a TV tuner on an SD card !!
Guest chucky.egg Posted August 22, 2003 Report Posted August 22, 2003 Mike It is possible, and there's info on the Orange Developer site for it, but (having tried commercial versions) it's never very accurate. I signed up for MapAMobile.com and... another one, forget their name now. The most accurate response I got was "within 1.7Km of xyz" You might find you get better results if you live in London (or similar) but if you live anywhere near some grass you're out of luck. Anyone think this idea would work? desigining a cps or (cellular positioning system) for the smartphone/xda etc.
