Guest Goutetsuu Posted July 28, 2003 Report Posted July 28, 2003 When using PocketCandy and and using the Matrix screensaver, the battery life is reduced horribly, before i could go nearly a full day without having to recharging, but when using PocketCandy, 4 hours go by and its recharging time. I haven't used any other screen savers, but does anyone else notice this when they use the software, and can any modifications be made to the software to stop the battery drainage, because i would hate to stop using the software as it is great.
Guest Brody Posted July 28, 2003 Report Posted July 28, 2003 Its a well documented problem with the Matrix screensaver, try another screensaver, the others drain the battery less...
Guest fraser Posted July 28, 2003 Report Posted July 28, 2003 Same applies to any application really. When the phone isn't performing any processing, the power savings are huge. A lot of application developers aren't aware of this, and don't make the effort to ensure that their application doesn't waste processor cycles, especially when idle. Screensavers on a device like this really aren't a great idea; you'd get much more life with the display turning completely off (not just the backlight) when you aren't using it.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted July 28, 2003 Report Posted July 28, 2003 If I remember right the Matrix screen saver actually drained the battery faster than it could charge
Guest Hax Posted July 29, 2003 Report Posted July 29, 2003 If I remember right the Matrix screen saver actually drained the battery faster than it could charge  OUCH! Best bet is to just set the screen saver to *ONLY* come on when you've got the phone connected to the power - looks great sat on the desk :) Hax
Guest fraser Posted July 29, 2003 Report Posted July 29, 2003 Has anyone created anything to keep the backlight on when getting mains power? IIRC, Pocket Candy didn't.
Guest Matt Whitfield Posted July 29, 2003 Report Posted July 29, 2003 Um, and you're surprised that something like that is going to kill your battery why? Try playing games constantly for a couple of hours and see what happens to you battery... same thing. No surprises there.
Guest Richie M Posted July 29, 2003 Report Posted July 29, 2003 hehe and this is why MS did not implement Screen Savers.
Guest akarno Posted July 29, 2003 Report Posted July 29, 2003 hehe and this is why MS did not implement Screen Savers. The reason MS did not implement screen savers is, I suspect, to do with the fact that the screens on Smartphones do not need saving. The reason screen savers were introduced was that cathode ray tubes (monitors) would burn specific patterns on the phosphor if they displayed the same thing for days on end. The first screen savers were on early computer terminals. They blanked the screen if no key was press for a set period. Later, software equivalents were written for the early PC. Then someone developed a program called After Dark that displayed moving fish and other things as when it blanked the screen. Hence a whole new industry was born. But with modern LCD screens they are just an animated picture that used up memory and, in the case of portable devices, battery life.
Guest spootyguy Posted July 29, 2003 Report Posted July 29, 2003 For some reason when I read akarno's post the words 'After Dark' made me shiver with nostalgia...
Guest siu99spj Posted July 29, 2003 Report Posted July 29, 2003 For some reason when I read akarno's post the words 'After Dark' made me shiver with nostalgia... ...like the flying toaster or the puzzle game. And then there was the twisted version with flying tiolets and such! Pity there ain't no XP version... In fact, come to think of it, I don't even remember it leaving the 3.1 platform. That WAS a long time ago
