GPRS - No connect or send only after a while

Hi there,

I was very excited to use the GPRS connection with my Compaq EVO 800 via the infrared using XP SP1.

I have got it connect only a handful of times and I am so confused as to why it does not work properly as no-one else here seems to be talking about it.

GPRS for outlook and ie on the phone works fine 99% of the time.

When I point the phone at the laptop I can install it as a Standard modem as expected.

I have the transfer rate down at 57600 and the connection string in XP yet i either start the DUC and then XP drops the phone off the pc just as it about to dial or the connection dials and then seems to loop forever on Registering your computer on the network. A couple of times now when I have been connected it becomes a send only connection after about 15 minutes.

Can anyone offer advice, I have been testing it in a full bar signal area and still the same problems!

Thanks.

First of all, if i understand correctly, what you mean by DUC is dial up connection. In this case the phone must hang up to dial the number from your laptop. That is you connecting to your ISP through your mobile phone line, just like at home.

GPRS though is different from a normal dial up connection, uses same line and faster than dialup through a mobile (which is i think 14400 max), but it uses same line/channel as your mobile, so it's one or the other..

Now then, if you wish to connect using GPRS, you need to be connecting through Orange GPRS server. In this case your phone will work as a kind of gateway. Y

ou should adjust your laptop IE connection settings, so that it goes through your GPRS channel. To do this you need to modify DNS ip settings. You will find correct IP's in this forum. Or just go to settings>data connections>edit>orange GPRS and see what connection settings are in there.

Transfer these settings onto ypour laptop. You will need to create a new connection in IE options, but I am not sure how exactly it needs to be done.

I hope I make myself clear. and some other clever people who are lucky owners of laptops can clear this up for you. Soz, can't be of anymore help.

Mine has just started doing something similer after working fine for weeks:

Earlier this evening I noticed web browsing had stopped working, the connection properties were claiming packets were getting sent but none were being received. I tried disconnecting/reconnecting then rebooting everything - each time the connection came up it would not receive any data.

I gave up on it and have just tried giving it another go. The connection process now fails consistently on 'Registering your computer on the network' with a PPP protocol failure.

I'll give the guys on 156 (Orange UK Wirefree support) a call later during their office hours and see what their solution is. I'm not holding my breath though, given how they can't even tell you how much of your GPRS allowance you have used this month I don't hold out much hope.

I have had a similar problem using my SPV as a modem on my PC (Using IrDa) some times it works great receiving and sending packets. But sometimes it stops sending and receiving, and I can not re-connect (it says modem is either not attached, setup incorrectly, or being used by another application)

After re-boot on computer - no change.

The only way I have found it to work is to dial out (any number will do) with your phone attached to our cradle. My SPV then says connection is being used (ie by activsync) and uses pass thru.

Hang up. Remove phone from cradle.

Then use your SPV with IrDa. It works again.

I guess it may be a conflict with Activsync but I have not tried un-installing or playing with settings.

I have used this method twice (or it could just be coincidence!!!!)

Just a follow up on my experience with Orange tech support:

After being put through to their second line support team they suggested I started using the at string

at+cgdcont=1,"IP","orangeinternet","",0,0

in the extra initialisation commands box found on the advanced tab of the modem properties (found inside the Phone and Modem options control panel). If you want to try it please copy+paste the string because the case is important.

I have only used the modem a couple of times since so have not had a chance to give it a full test yet, but it has worked the couple of times I've tried to use it.

My technician said he had not heard of this problem before so if this does not sort it out for you then give Wirefree support a call on 156 (then option 3, option 2) and get then to talk through your settings. They are there to give you technical support in getting connected, and the more they get to here about these recurring problems the better they will get at producing proper solutions for them. That is assuming you are with Orange UK, I'm sure you have the equivilent support number in your part of the world if not.
