I am starting to get a feeling that WMA does a much better job with compressing music files on size/quality scale..

It makes a 70KB WMA stream that sounds almost like 192KB MP3 file. It is obviously not the same on good speakers, but with headphones on the tube, it's almost perfect.. And it makes the file much louder itself, so on average is pretty damn goooooood!

And the file sizes compare 24MB to 74MB... (i only have a 32MB card for now, can't get my mind round the fact that my total 'phone cost' is gonna go up by almost 150 squid..

I used Windows Media Encoder 9 (ms website) and it's free (thanks ms). Encoded at preset CD quality @70KB.... loving it!!

Comments anyone??

Try encoding your wma files at 48Kbs but setting sample rate to 32K rather than 44K. It's not perfect, but for the Tube it's fine and the files will be even smaller.

Just rip it off CD's.. Use WindowsMedia Player or AltoMP3 to do that. It is not very legal to distribute it....

How do you go from MP3 files to WMA files ?

And if you compare MP3 in 128 Kbps quality with WMA - how much better is MP3 128 ??

I currently have approx 50 pices of MP3 128 kbps files on my 256 MB sd card on my SPV - would be nice if I could have the double amount with WMA without loss of quality using the WMA files

I used windows media encoder - find in on MS website, or a link in the post by Chris B. "How to convert video in 18 easy steps"

I'm a bit deaf though, so you're better off checking quality for yourself, especially if you have a 'musical ear' lol :D
