Guest drblow Posted August 1, 2003 Report Posted August 1, 2003 Well, according to the bloke I spoke to yesterday evening at Orange CS!! Since the end of the promo deal I have taken to phoning CS every time my GPRS is less than perfect (that's basically every time!) as for #2 per MB, I think the service should at least work! Last night, I phoned about the standard stuck on dialling problem, and was told that since there has been an incredible amount of complaints about GPRS, Orange have been making every effort to address the problem (!!). The guy actually did read a memo that CS had circulated last week - it mentioned Ericcson software, which is being implemented in every GPRS node. Apparently, they have been doing this over the last few months, and it is expected to be completed by the end of next week. Once the software has been applied to every node, they are going to 'switch it on' - which, allegedly, will fix all our GPRS connection problems!!!!!! The people at CS are taking note of the amount of complaints they get about GPRS, & if you are nice to them, they are on our side (I think) - probably coz they can't do anything to fix it, & are sick of people like me crying at them every 10 minutes about the crap GPRS service!! So, by the end of next week, if anybody has any GPRS problems, we should again flood them with complaints, according to my man on the inside!!
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted August 1, 2003 Report Posted August 1, 2003 Now THAT I like the sound of :) P
Guest fozzie Posted August 1, 2003 Report Posted August 1, 2003 I think this is tied in with someones comments in another thread about how they thought that their E100 had fixed the 'GPRS stuck on dialling' fault by temporarily disconnecting and re-connecting the GPRS call. Actually, I think this is a network function as I have also seen it happen quite a few times on my SPV. Just when I expect the call to fail I can see that it drops and retries. I do travel quite a bit and it does seem to happen in some places but not others. Perhaps these are the places that have had the nodes updated? It would make sense.
Guest drblow Posted August 1, 2003 Report Posted August 1, 2003 Perhaps these are the places that have had the nodes updated? It would make sense. I don't think so. According to the boyo - he says none of the software mentioned has actually been activated yet - they are waiting til all nodes have had the software update & then will apply it all simulataneously. Allegedly!?
Guest fozzie Posted August 1, 2003 Report Posted August 1, 2003 Perhaps not. But then info from from OCS is often as reliable as a cheap Japenese watch :) The GPRS stuck dialling does appear to have been fixed in some areas though. Perhaps just a coincidence then.
Guest Sculli Posted August 1, 2003 Report Posted August 1, 2003 I thought that this mahave been a fault in the phone, but I have been using GPRS out here in California for the last 3 weeks (sparingly at GBP 20 per MB!) and it hasn't stuck on "dialling" once. Back to Orange then...... Sculli
Guest lucky Posted August 1, 2003 Report Posted August 1, 2003 I cant believe this is still an issue. Vodafone gave me this explanation of why gprs was not working on an ericsson t68 over 2 years ago. They explained that towers(nodes) using ericsson equipment couldnt communicate with nokia nodes or something like that and it will be corrected soon. um it wasnt any better, ever, basically they said that there was something wrong with one particular function where it did not register gprs with the network etc etc. Just sounds like a lame CS excuse to me tech dept 1: what do we tell cs about gprs tech dept 2: give them that node thingy one. CS: its a node thing we are updating blah blah etc. Customer: oh i see.
Guest drblow Posted August 1, 2003 Report Posted August 1, 2003 I couldn't agree more!! But the fact that as you say, the problem was communication between erricson & nokia nodes - the fact that the guy mentioned erricson software does sound promising!?
Guest Pagemakers Posted August 6, 2003 Report Posted August 6, 2003 Still waiting. Still sits on the Dialling screen..................................
Guest morpheus2702 Posted August 6, 2003 Report Posted August 6, 2003 Turning the radio off the on normally kick starts GPRS when it is stuck on dialling for me. Where is Martin? He is the man when it comes to nodes!
Guest lucky Posted August 6, 2003 Report Posted August 6, 2003 Interesting thing happened last night i was using GPRS and i got a call and the phone rang and returned to GPRS. GPRS class b compliant. in the past when someone called when i was using GPRS nothing happened. I understood this to be a radio layer fault, fixed maybe?
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted August 6, 2003 Report Posted August 6, 2003 Its class B emulation. In theory when a call comes in while you are connected to GPRS, the data connection should be held (read: dropped) while it rings and you take the call. When you hang up you should then be able to continue surfing as before. If you are ~transfering~ data when the call comes in the call is diverted to voicemail or gives and engaged tone. This is a known and recognised bug, hopefully they will have fixed it by the time sp2003 hits the streets.
Guest martin Posted August 6, 2003 Report Posted August 6, 2003 Turning the radio off the on normally kick starts GPRS when it is stuck on dialling for me.It's probably because Radio Off changes the mobility state to idle and clears the routing area and cell ID in the SGSN. Radio on will then update the SGSN again with your present location. Orange to fix GPRS by next week Don't know anything about this but it should prove interesting.
Guest jhew Posted August 6, 2003 Report Posted August 6, 2003 I was beginning to wonder if it was actually IE at fault until I read this thread. What I've been doing when all IE shows is 'dialling' is: use the home key to back out of IE, then use the back key (or go into the progs menu and select it) to go back into IE, then reselect what ever site I was trying to get into from my favorites list. Doesnt work every time, but works more often than not.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted August 7, 2003 Report Posted August 7, 2003 Or just Stop > Go to restart the dialing....
Guest Pagemakers Posted August 7, 2003 Report Posted August 7, 2003 Its getting worse not better. 3 or 4 attempts to log on to GPRS every time. Its crap it really is. Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest Pagemakers Posted August 8, 2003 Report Posted August 8, 2003 My phone retrieves emails every 30 mins. With the GPRS connection constantly sticking I guess I have to manually connect and disconnect 50 times a day. It IS NOT acceptable Orange. You must be breaking your service level agreement with this appalling service.
Guest drblow Posted August 8, 2003 Report Posted August 8, 2003 Well, the bloke said to phone back this week if it wasn't fixed ( :) ) so obviously I did - am now eagerly awaiting a callback from the 'network action team', or something!? Could be good for a laugh - or maybe at least a few MB's free for all this trouble!!
Guest Pagemakers Posted August 12, 2003 Report Posted August 12, 2003 It is really pissing me off now. I have requested that GPRS be removed from my phone and re-instated. That took 48 hours and still I have to manually connect and disconnect 50 times a day just to connect to GPRS. We have two e100's in my house and the other one is sort of OK, sticking occasionally. Orange now tell me his phone is probably on a different NODE to mine and so they asking the Tech bods to move me onto another Node - Yea right! I am really, really getting sick of this phone and it's problems (it not the SPV I hear you scream) I "may" beg to differ. We'll see.
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted August 12, 2003 Report Posted August 12, 2003 I'm gonna make sure this is raised with Orange guys, and see what I can do... P
Guest Pagemakers Posted August 12, 2003 Report Posted August 12, 2003 Thanks Paul. This is how my inbox has looked for the past 2 hours! And as it looks almost every time GPRS tries to dial (every 30 mins). I could scream. I am this close to telling orange to stuff their SPV up their ... I hope you can sort something.ss000.gif
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted August 12, 2003 Report Posted August 12, 2003 I have the same problem, believe me... :) P
Guest morpheus2702 Posted August 12, 2003 Report Posted August 12, 2003 Good to know that this problem isn't just limited to my E-100. I just wonder if the heat is affecting things at the moment?
