STUCK IN CAR PROFILE

I've only had my phone for almost over a month. My problem started about 2 weeks ago, it would go into car profile mode w/o me touching or doing anything. When it is in this mode, i cant hear any sounds because it thinks that something is plugged in. When i use my headset, i can hear sounds fine and if i try to unplug it a little bit and try to wiggle the headset, it would go to normal mode. but after a while it goes back to car mode and i am unable to use my phone unless i had my headset in. This cant be a software problem because i had done hard reset on my phone 3 times and i have upgraded my phone already.

Things i did...

1) Called customer service and guess what i got? a cust rep that kept insisting i change my profile to loud. she kept on insisting that i should scroll down and see that loud is highlighted. i kept on telling her that even if it highlights loud or any other profile, it wont change to that. the checkmark would remain on car. she kept on insisting that it should change. I finally told her that i dont think it is a software problem, and i am preety sure it is hardware related because it changes when i move the headset.

2)Finally asked my dad to bring it to brightpoint and have it repaired. what my dad told me after is not what i am expecting at all. They said that the system board got wet and is corroded. They also said that it is irrepairable. What the heck!?! I take great care of my phone and it never ever got wet. Now, i have a few questions..if it got wet and the board is corroded, it most probably wouldnt turn on right? and if that is what happened, why do i have a sound in my head set? i only had it for a month now. would that be soon enough for the board to be corroded? i cant understand what they told my dad. i would probably call brightpoint tomorrow and ask the technician to explain to me what he saw. They charged us 450 for the labor and they voided my warranty by the way. I swear, i did not spill anything on it. Is it possible that this is already corroded even before i got the unit?

Pls pls help..im tied to this line for 2 and a half years and i cant use it anymore?

and by the way, after the tech opened up my unit. it doesnt recognize the head set anymore...meaning it doesnt have sound even when the headset is connected., the profile doesnt change to headset. it only happened right after they opened it up. BTW, i work as a technical support rep for an american computer company and i am in the portables/notebook department and I know what i am talking about....

An officemate of mine had the same problem, it switches to Headset mode intermittently. But this happened when he forced to plug a non-compatible 3.5mm into the 2.5mm headset outlet. I don't know what is it in your phone, might have been shorted? The tanager is not of the best quality (silver paint chipping off, action key being stuck.. etc), so might have been defective from the start and it only took sometime before its "sickness" started to show. Well if I was in your place I would have debated with Brightpoint not to void my warranty but anyway, maybe they're not ready to admit that some phones already out in the market had some defects from the beginning.

You may want to bring it to any wireless center. The podium branch treats their customers better. Try to visit coolsmartphone.com and check the FAQ section. It may have some answer.

oh well... BRIGHTPOINT strikes again!

better talk to a supervisor at BP to straighten things out.

yeah. i better do that. tried calling them yesterday at 12:30 pm, the receptionist transferred me to the guard. When he answered, he was also wondering why i was transferred there. then he placed me on hold and said that all the IT people are on lunch. Called again at about 6:00...again i spoke to the guard. this time all the IT people are already out.

I called again today and i was able to speak to the receptionist. She pulled up my job order and I have asked her several questions like why they profiled that the phone is hanging when it is not. I also told her that my phone did not get wet. She then volunteered the info that it might have gotten wet or it must be moisture that is causing this. I asked her why they said that the unit is wet when they are not sure about that. she even said i might have spilles softdrinks on it. then when she cant answer my questions anymore she said she's gonna transfer me to the person who assisted my dad while he was there. so she placed me on hold then came back and said that the other person is still busy and asked me if i am still willing to wait. I just told her to log that i called today and I would personally go there on friday.

yup. better go there yourself.

TIP: don't go there on a Sat. Most of the people that make decisions are not in on Saturdays.

good luck crystal01...i hope you could straighten things out with brightpoint, sometimes (well, almost often) people at brightpoint and at smart comm do not exactly understand what happened to our smartphones, they just simply have "list" of problem-cause blah-blah...

anyway, keep us informed.... :)

Hi guys,

thanks 4 all your concern. First of all, i tried the method of reinserting and carefully removing my headset to make it go back to normal. it worked for about a week and a half ago but the problem got worse this week.

eniweyz, i went back to brightpoint w/ my dad last saturday. i spoke to the receptionist and asked her about why they said that my unit was spilled and it was hanging. before we came there i probed my dad about what they told him. He said the lady from b.p. concluded that the phone was hanging because it is taking a long time to boot up and she told my dad that the smartphone doesnt have a headset, she even confirmed this with another receptionist (hah! see how well they know about our phones..) my dad not knowing anything..just agreed with them. so, back to the story..i was telling the lady that i dont think my phone got wet because it is quite new. she said it could either be that it got wet or because of moisture which neither is covered by our 1 yr warranty. so i told her it wasnt even hanging as what they had previously diagnosed. she said that it is their policy not to touch a phone that got wet because there is a very big risk that the power would be cut once they opened it. but she said to show us how corroded my system board is she would let a tech open it in front of us. so, a tech came out..used a scribe to open the housing..took out the lcd, tapes, and looked for the corrosion.. i was dreading that because i though that the whole board is corroded as implied by the description in my job order. I was looking as well and couldnt see any corrosion so i asked him where the corrosion was..OK there.. he found it right above one of the two teeny weeny conductors near the bottom of the board near the top of the connector for the usb cable. (the corrosion is probably the size of a small grain of salt) he said that my phone probably had some water dropped on it because that part is corroded and it couldnt be moisture because our phone's case is preety much closed. he said that the water must have come in from the back from where the latch for the battery is. sure, there's a hole there..situated from where the conductor is located inside. im just wondering why there arent any corrosion marks on the area surrounding it there especially the one around the internal battery(it is as small as a wristwatch battery) which should be the first one to be affected because it is situated right below that hole.he also said that the water might had come in from the universal connector at the bottom of the unit, but i asked him why i dont have any problems charging, or synching my phone...eniweyz, we asked him if they have a replacement part for that conductor or even for the headset jack or for the universal connector. he said that if any of those parts need to be replaced, it is included in the board itself which costs roughly around 15-16k. much like a new phone. they only have spare parts for the lcd, keyboard, and the plastics. my dad was asking him if there is any way we could repair that since my phone's just new and sayang naman. he took a 2nd look at the corrosion then he said that he would try to look it up under a microscope to see the extent of the damage and try to clean it if ever, he did not promise anything but he said he would try. so we agreed, he went back inside, went out after about 10 minutes and he said to try it. so i turned on my phone with my fingers crossed and voila! i heard the startup sound. my face lit up with a smile and the sound was like heaven to my ears. looke in the profile and it was in normal! hahaha..it is working now! cant be any happier...thanks to that tech who went out of his way to help me (after much explaining and arguing...and pleading) and tried to fix it. i was not able to ask his name because as soon as it was working he went back inside. so the lady came back and asked us what happened, we told her it was working now, in which she shrugged and said that it is bound to fail, in which i retorted that the corrosion they are telling us is so so so tiny, u even would not notice it at first. then she just said that techs have different views on that matter. WATER SPILLED OR NOT, IM JUST HAPPY THAT IT IS FIXED NOW. JUST PRAYING PROBLEMS LIKE THAT WOULD NOT COME AND HAUNT ME AGAIN IN THE FUTURE. Ü that made me realize just how i have come to love my phone! i wouldnt want it to be gone, and i was also thinking abt getting a nokia phone with all these problems arising from the SAP. but i cant...it has so much more to offer... so, i went to the mall and bought my phone a brand new case. hehehe...again, thanks for all your concern. till then.. :(  :) :o 8) :P

wow! that's great news! however, there are a lot of holes as to what the tech guy said. i don't think what you saw was corrosion. might just be lint.

also, corrosion on the usb module won't cause the phone to hang. unless the corrosion is causing the contacts to short circuit -- but that would mean that the phone will get damaged cause of the short circuit.

furthermore, a MICROSCOPE??? What??? I haven't seen any cellphone repair center that has a microscope. Who are they kidding??? :)

another thing, boards don't get corroded with water. i dropped my tv remote control into the toilet bowl (yes, i'm sometimes clumsy. and no, i haven't used the bowl yet when the remote dropped into it. hehe...) a few yrs back and it's still working fine now. My friend also dropped his 8210 into the pail (complete with soap suds) while he was washing his car. He just dried the phone for a couple of days, and it's still working now.

The thing that I resent abt BP is that they tend to make up baseless stories and theories as to why your phone is defective. And then they would say, "sige, sir/ma'am, try namin gawan ng paraan". after they "fix" your phone, you'd be so happy since you thought that they fixed a seemingly serious defect when in fact, there was no problem to begin with.

As for the headset jack, i think what they did is just to make "sungkit" the connectors inside so that the distance of the contacts is back to the original setting. (Am I making sense? :o)

It's quite mind-boggling as to why HTC would even consider BP as their official service center when they have shown such ineptness in what they do.

grifter,

do you think the lint you mentioned was not caused by water/moisture or anything that would result from outside?...but already a defect that that unit might already had from the start..?

crystal01,

did you pay BP some amount? or did they charge you for that?..(nice work brightpoint..cheers)...

crystal just said so that she didn't get the unit wet.

it's possible that it was there from the start or maybe it's just accumulated dirt.

Guest crystal01

I really did not get the unit wet. I dont know what really happened but he showed it to me and it looks like a greenish/whitish mold clinging on one of the conductors inside. Im not sure if this is caused by moisture or water....eniweyz i did not pay anything. :) we have asked the lady if we need to but she said that we dont. That's it! as for a celebration? hmmm i'll be thinkin about that! :o

i think it's cause for alarm rather than celebration.

if it is indeed corrosion, then it's weird since it got there even if the unit didn't get wet. must be poor insulation design. hmmm...

but it's all good, with your phone working and all. :)

she got alarmed indeed...pero nagawa na raw at okay na kaya ngayon parang gusto na nyang mag-celebrate? hehe kidding...
