Guest Crispy Posted August 16, 2003 Report Posted August 16, 2003 Ok, its about this whole deal about the Mitac software. We all know that it was removed from their site, but is there any proof that it was because of non-mitac users users downloading it??? Does anyone actually know wether it is illegal to distro the mitac software? or is it all just rumors?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted August 16, 2003 Report Posted August 16, 2003 Does anyone actually know wether it is illegal to distro the mitac software? or is it all just rumors? It's only leagl to ditribute any form of software if you have the authors permission to do so.
Guest nickcornaglia Posted August 16, 2003 Report Posted August 16, 2003 Then by rights...it should be illegal to use the mitac software on any phone other than a Mitac, though they should have blocked the software from their site to registered users only or distributed it on disc. The usage and distribution of the JAVA application would also be illegal as well. Is that correct? Would it also be illegal to load another carriers ROM onto your phone...ie, the Qtek ROM image onto an SPV? Realistically it should be, I would think. I've seen at least 3 sites on the web...sharing a boat load of smartphone software...free for the taking...cracked or simply shared registered programs. This is blatently illegal. But carrier/manufactured software seems to be accepted more. Where does MoDaCo officially draw the line on these issues?
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted August 16, 2003 Report Posted August 16, 2003 The rules on here are quite simple, no illegal software :-) The most blatant forms of this are copyrighted or unknown licence software, eg the mitac stuff - including the Java runtimes, and also all the firmware updates. Put simply, any sites you have seen posting this stuff are putting themselves at risk, and this is something we can't do! :-) P Posted from my SmartPhone!
