Guest awarner [MVP] Posted August 16, 2003 Report Posted August 16, 2003 I cancelled my GPRS ages ago and in doing so the "G" was not displayed anymore. Earlier today I received a SIM update, and this update has now returned the "G" to the top of the screen :? To test it I tried to dial out and the small g apeared but then stated the usual Unable to Place Call message. I have phoned Orange and no surprise they have no knowledge of this and insist that my GPRS is still not activated if that's why how come I have the "G" back :? Anyone else had this update or can shed more light on it?
Guest Speedy Posted August 16, 2003 Report Posted August 16, 2003 I had my gprs cancelled as well ages ago, and as yours it disappeared. But then at one point i had to do a hard reset and once i booted with default settings and stuff the G was back. I also phone O and they confirmed that it was cancelled. I have not been billed for my gprs since i cancelled, so i would not worry :)
Guest hellboundpeanut Posted August 16, 2003 Report Posted August 16, 2003 dont think its all too much , ive never been able to get gprs to work ( on payg O2 ) as apparently o2 payg dont support it  .. but ive always had the "G" HbP
Guest Brody Posted August 16, 2003 Report Posted August 16, 2003 I may be wrong but i thought that the G just represented a connection between the phone and the GPRS node, whether you are able to connect (contract wise) or not.
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted August 17, 2003 Report Posted August 17, 2003 The G in this case probably does signify GPRS is enabled, but probably only for MMS? P Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted August 17, 2003 Report Posted August 17, 2003 It is down to MMS :) Orange has now decided to enable my phone with MMS even though I've never asked :?
Guest hellboundpeanut Posted August 17, 2003 Report Posted August 17, 2003 the "g" signifys that the phone detects the gprs network .. if you read the manual :) . buut i dont know why it would go then come back again .... crazy eh ? HbP
Guest martin Posted August 17, 2003 Report Posted August 17, 2003 hellboundpeanut I can't believe you still haven't got the O2 prepaid sim setup  cos I remember you were trying set this up a many months ago. You can use WAP over GPRS and a GSM dialup up for the internet connection Have a look in the GPRS settings repository on page2 and use the payandgo settings that you find there. Remember to access all WAP sites using WSP:// for the GPRS connection and then use http:// to use the dial up connection for web browsing. I use an O2 prepaid SIM myself with no problems and so do many others. Good luck m8
Guest hellboundpeanut Posted August 17, 2003 Report Posted August 17, 2003 hey , i cant get it to work at all! could you post me the settings and the o2 tarrif you're on! .. the o2 helpline / store said it wasnt avaliable on payg .. HbP

HbP Err the manual??? do me a favour  I know what the G stands for, the fact is that when you ask for GPRS to be disabled then the G is not displayed because you get a SIM update to disable it. Now I have had a SIM update to activate MMS this is why it is being shown again.
Guest hellboundpeanut Posted August 17, 2003 Report Posted August 17, 2003 cor , well you did ask :) ... got your interpretation wrong . HbP
