Hmmm. If ou use the wap APN and surf using WAP what happens?

WAP over GPRS is supposed to be free, but internet over GPRS isn't.

Yep, use wsp:// in your WAP addresses to use the WAP connection and its associated WAP APN which is free.

You will be charged for using the GPRS internet APN.

You will also be charged for using a GSM dialup whether it is connected to the internet connection or WAP connection. If you get 2 arrows next to the signal meter then you will be charged for length of time you hold that connection :)

Even worse, if you were set the internet connection to use a GSM dialup and if MSN messenger was set to 'open connection when available' then it could automatically dial up and keep it open while you would be charged by the second. At least a GPRS connection would only charge you for the amout of data transfered which would be nothing (except for a little bit of polling data).

You could always temporarily force yourself onto the WAP connection by going to internet explorer, untick 'auto detect setting' and make 'Select Network=WAP network'. All WAP sites would then use the WAP connection whether they were addressed as http:// or wsp://.

This is a quite a good place for finding new WAP sites.

i think what he is trying to point out is that internet browsing via the p800 is free.

i don't know how it is done but yes it is true. you can view full html pages using the www.globe.com.ph apn with the sony ericsson p800.

anyway, thanks for the warning!

so is there anyone else who could attest to it?? and could have anyone found a way to route around it?? sayang naman the phone has really generous capabilities. if there is no solution to this, it's a big loss.

if u use the internet.globe.com.ph apn you get charged with .25c/kb but if u use the WAP over GPRS its free. dunno if it's possible to access the internet via the WAP portal

Yep, I myself also fell victim to Globe's free what ever. I called up 211 twice to confirm and was specifically told that browsing was free and I would only be charged if and only if I download. The dummy answer phone on the other end didn't even asked what phone I have.

I was only after two days of surfing that I noticed my bill surged from 400 to 1200 (in two days!!!). So I called up 211 again and asked why it is so, and was told that if I use a PDA phone like the SPV I will be charged so and so.

Crap I removed all GPRS config on my phone and will never use it to access the internet again! Internet cafes and prepaid internet cards are better and cheaper nowadays.....
