Guest FrankyG Posted August 18, 2003 Report Posted August 18, 2003 Hi, just wanted to know how everyone else has been affected by the MSBlast worm, as my browsing speed is unbelievably bad! I'm on W2k and was fully up to date with anti virus and firewall, but, the night before this worm was announced I applied SP4 to my Pc. Has anyone found that doing this had a detrimental affect on internet performance? I also understand NTL have a DNS cluster problem, too many problems to isolate what the problem is!! I cant even post from home to the forum because of proxy/login issues... or pickup hotmail.. i'm a bit annoyed :-/ Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted August 18, 2003 Report Posted August 18, 2003 I know NTL in Wiltshire area had the problem with the worm but in Southampton area it's been fine and running nice and fast :)
Guest amo Posted August 18, 2003 Report Posted August 18, 2003 My cable modem keeps turning off all the time, ive lost count how many time my net connection has gone over the past week now :)
Guest Rob.P Posted August 19, 2003 Report Posted August 19, 2003 mines been a bit slow of late, but here's a possible way to improve speed generally even if there isn't a prob with the net. Download a little prog called Broadband speed test and in the settings for that porg it will tell you what the other proxy/cache servers are (NTL actually use the BT backbone) and change your proxy server to point to that. That way when loads of people sign on to use their broadband service you will quite happily be surfing with hardly any lag cause your not on the same server as joe public. My tech support at work told me this trick been using it ever since.
Guest capt_janeway Posted August 19, 2003 Report Posted August 19, 2003 I found the IE update of last month totally screwed my DNS so I deleted it and everything is hunky dory! On PlusNet
Guest amo Posted August 19, 2003 Report Posted August 19, 2003 Rob.P where can i download that program?
Guest Rob.P Posted August 19, 2003 Report Posted August 19, 2003 Here it is, written by an independant and it's a great piece of software, I sent off my £5 to support the lad. Broadband Speed Test Has the majority of services on there, you just select either BT's ADSL or Blueyonder, the NTL part has three different ones depending on which service you are on (i.e. 512, 1Mbit). Then you get a test report which is quite comprehensive. [edit] It is freeware by the way, just looked at mt first line of this post it reads like it costs £5 [/edit]

Guest amo Posted August 19, 2003 Report Posted August 19, 2003 Some thing seriously wrong with my net connection.... How big is this file?? I downloaded it... but it doesnt install... How can there be something seriously wrong with your net connection if the program downloaded, theres obviously something wrong with your pc for not letting you install it.
Guest Maverick Posted August 19, 2003 Report Posted August 19, 2003 Nay.. I think the download broke off in the middle .. Tried it several times... then finally managed. BTW... Never managed to dowload the 2003 SDK... it keeps breaking off.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted August 20, 2003 Report Posted August 20, 2003 I know NTL in Wiltshire area had the problem with the worm but in Southampton area it's been fine and running nice and fast :) Talk about speeking too soon NTL went down last night for a few hours and I had to use Dial up  I was impressed by the speed of the site it was faster then at my friends house in Wiltshire :?
Guest amo Posted August 20, 2003 Report Posted August 20, 2003 Is anyone elses internet connection (whose ISP is ntl) constantly turning off?
Guest Rob.P Posted August 21, 2003 Report Posted August 21, 2003 My NTL has been alright of late, went a bit slow at some points but not for long. Another trick for NTL to increase your bandwidth, not sure if this one still works I know NTL have been re-organising a bit internally. To increase you bandwidth phone them up and say that your connection doesn't seem to be what it should is there anything they could do at their end like "Turn up the Gain", they do this and your bandwidth increases, you can probably get away with this about a couple of times. I have done it once and I'm on 1Mb so now it is about 1.2. My mate was on 512 and he is now on 756 just through them increasing the gain. Getting the gain increased also works for BT landlines which can give you a good signal for your dial-up, didn't try it when I had ADSL so not sure if it does anything, in theory it should.
Guest axe Posted August 21, 2003 Report Posted August 21, 2003 i thought this was abou the blaster virus ? it caused major havoc in the netherlands .... my own company's internal network was also badly hit ... internet speeds in general have been slower since the worm broke out .... it will fix itself in a week or so i guess
Guest FrankyG Posted August 21, 2003 Report Posted August 21, 2003 It seems like the SP4 patch to W2k has ruined browsing speed for many people. Once I have my PC up and running (see What a tube thread in off topic) I'll be sticking with SP3..or sticking XP on instead.
Guest FrankyG Posted August 22, 2003 Report Posted August 22, 2003 its NOT SP4 that messed up browsing, i just installed w2k sp4 onto another partition and web browsing is very fast again. finger is now pointing to IE6, or one of the patches/service packs for it. Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest Rob.P Posted August 22, 2003 Report Posted August 22, 2003 I can confirm it is the latest service pack for IE6 that will screw up your http connection, I installed it on my test machine and that was the end of web browsing, but all other net connections worked (tested with FTP and Eve-online, all connected fine and at usual speed. Also Broadband Speed Test said everything was cool). So I put it on my main machine just to double check and yes the update killed http browsing. I didn't bother putting it on my other machine as I'm definately sure that it is this update that is causing the prob, so I rolled back the update and they all work fine again. [edit] Just notified NTL tech support of the problem that I have experienced, will let you know if I get a reply [/edit]
