Guest Myke Posted August 21, 2003 Report Posted August 21, 2003 would you buy a ms smartphone with a built in keyboard similar to some of the nokias out there? ala Nokia 6800 i think as the smartphones slowly evolve, we will get more word processing type programs for taking notes. i think the built in keyboards work pretty well (read: faster than t9). i would much rather use them than t9 while sending emails, sms, & instant messages. i could have sworn i saw a phone with a built in thumbboard that popped out from the bottom of the phone with the press of a button as long as it doesnt bulk up the phone too much and it could stay hidden somhow, i think theyre a good idea
Guest amo Posted August 21, 2003 Report Posted August 21, 2003 I have an NEC e808 at the moment in the range of phones im using at the moment which has an integrated qwerty keyboard and to be honest it took more getting used to than just using t9.Also theres the risk of the buttons being too small which i think the e808 suffers from.
Guest yoos Posted August 21, 2003 Report Posted August 21, 2003 I don't care for that 3300 pictured, but I like the 2nd one (my friend has it and I messed around with it a bit and like the keyboard).
Guest nickcornaglia Posted August 21, 2003 Report Posted August 21, 2003 I agree. The Nokia flip open keyboard is one of the best keyboard ideas to come along yet.
Guest Crispy Posted August 21, 2003 Report Posted August 21, 2003 I agree. The Nokia flip open keyboard is one of the best keyboard ideas to come along yet. Yes, an Nokia flip open keyboard on a SPV-style phone would be interesting! ... and expensive ...
Guest idavid Posted August 21, 2003 Report Posted August 21, 2003 personally, no. the most appealing thing about Smartphones are their relatively diminutive size, a keyboard would wreck this. i am really pleased with the whole attachable keyboard thing, adding the functionality when and where you want it. its still a phone first and foremost.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted August 21, 2003 Report Posted August 21, 2003 The keyboard would also defeat Microsofts criteria that the handsets should be for one handed use only.
Guest blewer Posted August 21, 2003 Report Posted August 21, 2003 I like the idea of having an attachable keyboard supplied with the phone, but to have it built in would probably make it a brick.
Guest Myke Posted August 21, 2003 Report Posted August 21, 2003 i messed around with the Nokia 6800 (flip open keyboard pictured) at my local AT&T wireless store and I really liked it. it really didnt add that much size or weight to the unit at all. I think MS could still advertise thier os as single handed use, because when the phones closed it looks and acts much like a normal phone, you only open it to write easier (much like you only attach a keyboard to write easier).
Guest Myke Posted August 21, 2003 Report Posted August 21, 2003 here is the NEC e808 amo was talking about: yeah, that keyboard is a tad small..
Guest nickcornaglia Posted August 21, 2003 Report Posted August 21, 2003 I think those who dont like the 6800's keyboard have never held the phone in their hand. It's the most un obtrusive keyboard option I've ever seen.
Guest amo Posted August 21, 2003 Report Posted August 21, 2003 Touchscreen would be nicer, would eliminate problems with t9 too. But as mono mentioned, im not sure if this conforms with Microsofts strict specification for smartphones.
Guest Myke Posted August 21, 2003 Report Posted August 21, 2003 i think touch screen would be a step in the wrong direction..
