Guest Will Posted August 21, 2003 Report Posted August 21, 2003 What is a Canary Diag (bootloader)? The bootloader is like the BIOS on a pc, you can use it to perform many functions, the availability of these functions depend on the version of the bootloader you have. What is the MV (Tri-Color)? The 3 color diagnostic screen is the 'terminal' mode of the phone, allowing you to communicate with the phone using usb or serial connections. To perform updates, configuaration changes and other fun things to the 'core' of the phone. How do I get to the Canary Diag (bootloader)? On an HTC device (tanager or canary), simply hold donw the voice record button then power on the phone, release the button when y ou see the screen light up. Once you see either (Press any key to enter bootloader, press and hold the action key/push down the joystick, and hold) How do I get to the MV (Tri-Color) screen Perform the steps above but instead of pressing the action key/joystick, press any other key. What is the IPSM? The IPSM holds all of your personal data, and setup data, along with details of any applications you installed to the phone. What is new in: DK 1.3.6.22 ? SMS counter (buggy) added. Linked to bootloader 1.07.4 Prevents the use of the 'simunlock' application How do I downgrade my OS version? Booting the device into it's diagnostic (3 color screen for htc devices), then run one of the older operator supplied 'updates', as the phone is in diagnostic mode, you can update ANY version. How do I downgrade my Bootloader version? The easiest way is to place an mmc or sd card in the device with a copy of the desired bootloader on it, then reboot the phone holding down the record button, you will be prompted to download bootloader, click the action button, and the bootloader is copied from the card to the phone. What is the Keyboard Driver? The keyboard driver update (V1.3.7.6) is available using the 'Orange Update' application on your phone; it is designed to work with the flexible rubber ORA keyboard. I have simunlocked my phone, is the code valid after I update the phone? Yes. Should I upgrade or downgrade my phone? Now that is up to you, running the latest update will tell you if this update is newer than your current version, there is ALWAYS a risk in upgrading, of loosing your data etc. As for downgrading, this is more likely to cause you issues that can only be resolved by a hard reset.. You have been warned! Where do I get all these updates? Well any 'official' upgrades will be very obvious (MoDaCo and any other forum for your handset/operator will broadcast the details). If you want to play with a foreign update, try their support websites (and do this at your own risk!!). When the phone is in the Canary MV (Tri-Color ) mode, my pc cannot see it? Try another USB port. What is USBTerm? USBTerm is a terminal application that uses the 'tty' protocol to communicate with HTC smartphones over the usb connetion when they are in the 3 color diagnostic screens. It allows you to communicate with the phone's qfs file system. Where can i get USBTerm? www.monolithix.org/spv What is the qfs filesystem? **QFS stands for ???? File System, on HTC smartphones it allows copying of various rom area to and from the phone and storage card, it also allow loading of .bin files (flashing). How do I back Up my bootloader or IPSM? Firstly for a bootloader backup, you need a spare sd card, (4mb card is large enough), format the card using the command 'qfs 10' then to copy the phones current bootloader to the card use the command 'qfs 0'. To backup the IPSM you need a larger card (32mb or larger depending on how much is in your IPSM folders). Again format the card using 'qfs 10' then use the command 'qfs 8' to backup the IPSM to the card. How do I restore/replace my bootloader or IPSM. Using USBTerm you can use the command 'qfs 1' to copy the bootloader from the card to the phone, or 'qfs 9' for the IPSM. Alternatively: Simply insert the card you copied the bootloader or IPSM onto into the phone, and reboot into diagnostic 3 color screen, the phone should prompt you to download the contents of the card. How do I use it? Remove phone from cradle, and boot to Canary MV (Tri-Color ) mode. Right click on the activesync icon, select 'connections' and uncheck the usb connection box. Place phone in cradle Open a command window (in xp run>cmd) Run the usbterm.exe Once you see the cmd0> prompt, type 'qfs ?' (the space IS important) You will then see a list of options: QFS HELP: MODE 0: Bootloader --> CARD [bootloader and MV] 1: CARD --> Bootloader [bootloader and MV] 2: WinCE --> CARD [this is the BUILD version] 3: CARD --> WinCE [this is the BUILD version] 4: GSM --> CARD 5: CARD --> GSM 6: CE+GSM --> CARD 7: CARD --> CE+GSM 8: IPSM --> CARD [all your settings mail etc] 9: CARD --> IPSM [all your settings mail etc] 10: Format CARD ---------- XIP Update ---- 100: SMARTFON --> CARD 101: OPERATOR --> CARD 102: CHAIN --> CARD 103: OEM --> CARD 104: LANG --> CARD 105: CARD --> SMARTFON 106: CARD --> OPERATOR 107: CARD --> CHAIN 108: CARD --> OEM 109: CARD --> LANG .... NOTE: it appears that CE+GSM (qfs 6) does not work correctly, its is advised that you back these up seperatley using `qfs 2' and then `qfs 4' How do i make a rom backup with USBTerm? **Is this possible? a Full ROM??? What does QFS mean? According to the hex header of the files, it's 'Hitler QFS'. I guess QFS is a basic bootloading format, maybe Quick File System? What does XIP mean? I have had little success using these features on usbterm, but from bootloader menus you can do the backups. XIP means eXecute In Place.
