Guest Paul [MVP] Posted August 21, 2003 Report Posted August 21, 2003 PONG, created by MoDaCo Member RichieM, has been released for download, exclusively for MoDaCo Plus members, 'good old retro gaming at it's best' :) MoDaCo Plus members can download the game here! RichieM has asked that if you sign up to MoDaCo Plus to get the game, you put his name down as the referrer :-) P
Guest amo Posted August 21, 2003 Report Posted August 21, 2003 I know it cant be midnights fault, but the graphics seem kinda blurry. Is that how it is on screen or has a dodgy compression been used?
Guest Richie M Posted August 21, 2003 Report Posted August 21, 2003 Just a dodgy screen shot Amo, it dont look like that on the phone :)
Guest amo Posted August 21, 2003 Report Posted August 21, 2003 Cool, looks like MoDaCo plus isn't far away at all...
Guest Brody Posted August 21, 2003 Report Posted August 21, 2003 Cheers for the game! A great time waster! Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest Crispy Posted August 21, 2003 Report Posted August 21, 2003 And then the 10 billion dollar question ... how does non-plus members get this little jewel??? (And don't answer: sign up for plus!!)
Guest moomoomoo Posted August 21, 2003 Report Posted August 21, 2003 heh... typical. Shame about the non-modaco plus developers that put their time and effort into coding apps and games that are made available to everyone... most generously it would seem.
Guest Brody Posted August 21, 2003 Report Posted August 21, 2003 There has to be some incentive for signing up to Plus otherwise there'd be no point to it :? Thanks again to all concerned :)
Guest moomoomoo Posted August 22, 2003 Report Posted August 22, 2003 well none of the other things interest me, so it's not really worth spending 24 quid on a game of pong :)
Guest James Posted August 22, 2003 Report Posted August 22, 2003 wow! game looks sweet.... get this baby tomorrow! Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest NederSoren Posted August 22, 2003 Report Posted August 22, 2003 well none of the other things interest me, so it's not really worth spending 24 quid on a game of pong :) More games are comming soon.. eg. SmartAnoid and i know more games are considered to be free for MoDaCo Plus members atm.. ;)
Guest Deemon Posted August 22, 2003 Report Posted August 22, 2003 does seem a little elitest...like a second tier to the smartphone community. Dont get me wrong im grateful for the amount of work that you guys put into running the forum...but if everyone just starts releasing their apps and games just to a small proportion of the community then that can only be a bad thing. I would like to think that Ive contributed my fair share to this community in the last 8 months...and will continue to do so in the future with the project that Im currently working on...so if I can make my work freely available to the whole community, why cant everyone else ? I mean you either set up an agreement with Handago or whoever to market you software and everyone pays or you give it away for free...to give it away free to only plus members is like saying that you dont consider non plus members to be on an equal standing within the forum. So you might ask "why dont you become a plus member ?" and my answer would be , having read through the benefits of which there are many, theres actually nothing there that Im really interested in. Im a smartphone user who just likes to play round with the spv and check out new stuff the community is doing. I know the price isnt that steep ,but if the only benefit I would really get any use from is access to another forum I dont see it as a worth while outlay for me.(And what goes on in the Plus forum? more of the same ? I dont know!!) so no flaming please...these are just my thoughts on the subject. Im not bagging the forum or the Plus members in any way, Im just asking why should non plus members be disadvantaged in this way when many of us put just as much effort into the smartphone community.
Guest nickcornaglia Posted August 23, 2003 Report Posted August 23, 2003 Everyone is entitled to their opinions as I believe this forum services most of the free world. :) This post is NOT directed at any one person here...at all! My personal opinion is this: I am a user from the US. The Smartphone is unsupported and officially unavailable here as of today. If not for the support offered here on this site, I would not be using a Smartphone today. Without this community (including the Administrator, Moderators, Plus members AND non-plus members), I would never had been able to set-up my phone, tweak it, add to it, use it or enjoy it. Everyone here has provided me with more information and perks than I ever could have dreamed of....all to fuel my gadget obsessions. I would have gladly and eagerly paid the small fee as a donation to help fund the site, even if there were NEVER any benefits involved. In fact, I joined Plus before there were any benefits. I'm certainly not speaking for Paul, RitchieM or anyone else when I say that running a site with this much traffic is not free. 13000+ members and barely over 100 Plus members??!! Unbelievable! I would guess that at the very least...3000 of those members got enough information from this site to make the small price of Plus Membership well worth it. Smartphone users are carrying $200 to $500+ phones in their pockets. And without this site, many of them would be unable to use those phones. Isn't the Plus Membership fee relatively small compared to the price of your phone. Compared to probably being unable to use that expensive phone? I would hope that one day, this site would be financially backed by Microsoft and the Networks, as it has provided sales and support to users when they have not. But until then, I personally have no problem at all donating to a site that offers so much and doesn't ask for anything in return. Not speaking for anyone...I would guess that RitchieM doesn't get paid for his work, time or his software provided here. He, like countless others here, support the site as much as they can. How much could he get for Pong anyway? $3.99? He would never get rich on that. But if offering the software to Plus members as an incentive to help booster financial support for a community in which he has become engrossed in, is his chosen method for distribution and support for the site...then hurray for RichieM. If making a donation via Plus Membership is your chosen method, then hurray for the donators. If you feel forum contribution is enough...the hurray for you as you are still an important part of this community. Everyone here benefits from the information and interaction on this site. Isn't it nice to get little perks as a thank you for financially supporting the site as well? [/sleepy rant] PS...I'm selling pirated copies of PONG for $3.99 to non-Plus members by clicking HERE!
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted August 23, 2003 Report Posted August 23, 2003 Nicely put, mate. Well said.
Guest nickcornaglia Posted August 23, 2003 Report Posted August 23, 2003 Thanks Mono...After reading this again (the next day) I'm sorry I posted it here where it will be lost...instead of somewhere else where it would be seen by more visitors. That is some fine work! :)
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted August 23, 2003 Report Posted August 23, 2003 Valid points one and all... Much of the software you will soon see coming to Plus is stuff that people are being PAID to develop, exclusively for Plus. Put simply, this can't happen without people paying to be members, and the more who join, the more great stuff we can do. Plus isn't about me making lots of money, it's about making the MoDaCo community even better, and owning a Smartphone even better, as well as helping cover the costs associated with running the site. There's other stuff too, like some prizes, car stickers and the like that are also funded by Plus. If you don't want to pay for Plus, that's fine, and it's not about an elitist community. If someone has a problem I know the answer too, i'll help them either way. For me personally, say I want, for example, an FTP client, or the community wants another particular app. I'd have to write it myself, or pay the whole cost to commission it from a developer... this is an alternative. Anyway, I could talk about this for hours, and I was pretty careful when designing plus to try and pitch the benefits and costs - about the same as a magazine per month - just right, but i'm happy to debate further either in the forum, by PM or on IRC! Your humble servant... P Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest Deemon Posted August 24, 2003 Report Posted August 24, 2003 yes very good points all... and in the cold light of day...they are the correct points....i guess that will teach me to work 17 hours straight and then read the forum in a tired and angry mood.... encece, Paul i apologize for misinterpreting this post so badly... but also i guess i have been thinking a bit selfishly when it comes to the plus membership, its not much and has helped me to make my phone a joy to use rather than an expensive paperweight.... come payday my application for plus status will be winigng its way to you... keep up the good work...long live modaco.....
Guest nickcornaglia Posted August 24, 2003 Report Posted August 24, 2003 No need to apologize...but I am glad you're deciding to join. :) BTW...nothing going on in the Plus Forum other than a listing of benefits, discount codes and reqests for new benefits. I don't know what you imagined but there's no secrets in there! ;) In the end...well worth the small fee...if for nothing else than just for support. You'll be glad you did. :D
Guest Coucou Posted August 26, 2003 Report Posted August 26, 2003 Smartphone users are carrying $200 to $500+ phones in their pockets. And without this site, many of them would be unable to use those phones. Isn't the Plus Membership fee relatively small compared to the price of your phone. Compared to probably being unable to use that expensive phone?  Are they? Mine was free off orange. Always wait for the special offers! 8) Don't get me wrong, this site has helped me a lot, money's tight though which is why I decided to take pity on Coolsmartphone first - he doesn't have a minimum level of contribution and has fewer donors and more members! When, and if, I can afford £24 I'll probably join up. If the wife doesn't find out anyway.
Guest nickcornaglia Posted August 26, 2003 Report Posted August 26, 2003 Are they? Mine was free off orange. What kind of contract does Orange offer? Are you tied into a year or two with the free phone? What is the cancellation penalty fee? (I'm asking 'cause I really dont know... <---US User)
Guest Coucou Posted August 27, 2003 Report Posted August 27, 2003 i'm on an old contract that isn't offered any more called everyday 50. costs fifty pence a day and i get fifty minutes of off.peak calls a day. oh yes, i get locked in for a year every time i renew. Posted from my SmartPhone!
