Guest ceanth Posted August 22, 2003 Report Posted August 22, 2003 Hi all, new to the forum. I am thinking of buying an SPV but i wanted to know if the phone was for me. I have owned many phones in my time and i currently have a nokia 7650 but i want a cheaper alternative, first let me give my reasons for looking into the spv: 1. mp3 playback with stereo sound 2. nice big screen 3. uses SD cards (so cheap(ish)) to run 4. interested in the use of m-soft 5. looks like a nice phone Ok now here are some points in a phone that i feel i need/use most 1. SMS, i do send text messages so T9 input with adding to the dictonary would be pritty much essential 2. SMS, i would like to be able to store quite a few messages (more then the sim card can handle) 3. SMS, reports and automatic "sent" folder would be essental 4. Vibration which can be felt, a nice strong vibration is VITAL as i do like to keep phones on silent when im in the house 5. Profiles are very handy when switching from environments eg bus, home, work etc etc 6. custom ringtones, midi/polyphonic tones would be nice and wav tones to be supported would be nice also but not essential 7. good battery life, more then 2 days at least! 8. mp3s being able to be played wile messing around with menu system would be essential i guess with SPV 9. 265 card would be great to have Ok i think thats about enough, anymore i can think of i will add later. Now as for the phone itself, i have read that it crashes alot, does orange have software upgrades, nokia have firmwares which get released every so often is it the same with this phone? How much memory does the phone have (internal) and is software/applications avalabile for download (if you know what i mean). If someone could shead some light on these questions it would be great, but please remember that as i have a 7650 my natural instinct would be to compair but i am looking for a cheaper alternative to this phone, dont really play games much, send the odd text message and do like my music!
Guest ashley.flynn Posted August 22, 2003 Report Posted August 22, 2003 alright theres a lot of questions there but ill answer as many as i can. I have very little experience with a 7650 im happy to say :) Heres a quick comparison between the SPV and a nokia 8910 sorry it was the closest i could find and the spacing will come out poorly Manufacture Nokia Orange Model 8910 SPV Networks 900/1800 900/1800/1900 Height 103 116 Width 46 46 Depth 20 22 Weight 110 120 Battery Li-Ion 750 Lithium Ion Standbytime 300 100 <-hours Talktime (m) 240 180 Number of col NA 65000 Memory NA 16MB Ringtones 40 WAV files Games NA 1 WAP version 1.2.1 2.0 Display width NA 176 Display height NA 220 Your reasons for getting the phone are all correct. with regard to desired features; 1. Adding to the t9 dictionary is automatic 2. Not sure if you can store the messages off the SIM but i have had my SPV since november and never needed to delete a message! 3. does both 4. vibration is good enough to get that baby dancing on the table! 5. available and easy to use 6. custom ringtones, any wav file can be used 7. battery life is pretty good should last a few days without probs 8. As long as you sample the bitrate down slightly u can use the menus without a problem. If they are at 128, they can skip occasionally. 9. around $75 The phone doesn't crash (mine, hardly ever) as much as you think. if you were to buy one now it would have all the updates which have made it faster and more stable. You can add any updates manually by getting the update from the orange website Can i also mention that you can watch video and full movies on the phone? MPEG, AVI, DivX etc. Also you can browse the internet using HTML rather than WAP meaning you can view any site you want to With regards to software, browse through the 'catalogue' forum on this site to see a list of commercial software and games available and check out monolitix's site for a list of freeware http://www.monolithix.org/SPV_software.html Check out the customisation forum to see all the different Skins, ringtones etc for this phone which are FREE!!! lastly this phone can be almost completely syncronised with you PC meaning even if the worst should happen, restoring is easy i hope this helps with you decision Ash
Guest ceanth Posted August 22, 2003 Report Posted August 22, 2003 Hi ashley thanks for your responce, the thing i like about the SPV is the cheap memory, its a excellent winning point, i will do some more research on the phone but things are looking good for the SPV :) Anymore additions would be greatly appreciated. ceanth
Guest mcwarre Posted August 22, 2003 Report Posted August 22, 2003 Got to admit you can't beat the MP3 player (comibined with phone). Lets be honest it is n ot the best phone on the market  ; it is not the best PDA on the market  ; it is not the best MP3 player on the market  . But it bally well does the lot of them. Nothing else comes close. :) ;) Seriously it saves you having to lug around 3 devices. Add to that Pocket IE and Pocket Outlook and compatability with Windows (well W2K and XP at least) then it is clearly (still) a market leader :!: :!: Advice; get the E-100 not the original SPV as it is more reliable and robust; you will not regret it.
Guest ceanth Posted August 22, 2003 Report Posted August 22, 2003 Advice; get the E-100 not the original SPV as it is more reliable and robust; you will not regret it. I had looked into this but the only difference i could see was the keypad and screen, getting the original will save me around £100, is it really worth getting the E100? What differences does it have?
Guest nobznss Posted August 22, 2003 Report Posted August 22, 2003 I had a Nokia 3650 (same OS as the 7650) before I bought my SPV. Let me tell you this, there's NO comparison. When you buy a nokia you are pretty much presented with all you can do with your phone. There's not much room for improvement. The SPV is MUCH different. If you don't have it on the phone, you can pretty much always get it. If the phone doesn't do it, it can. It can do everything the 7650 can do and SO much more. I will never go back to a non-smartphone. No Symbian OS for me again, I guarantee it.
Guest nobznss Posted August 22, 2003 Report Posted August 22, 2003 Brighter screen and easier to use keypad. That's about it.
Guest ceanth Posted August 22, 2003 Report Posted August 22, 2003 i think the SPV will be better, as i am looking for a cheaper alternative to nokia i will be better off getting the normal SPV, just doing some more research on the phone, so far so good could someone tell me if 192 byte rate effects the MP3 playback on the phone?
Guest nobznss Posted August 22, 2003 Report Posted August 22, 2003 I haven't noticed it. I've got a few MP3's that are that way. I may get a glitch every so often, but not too bad.

What differences does it have? Maybe I am a bit biased I am on my 5th replacement SPV! Price wise if the difference is more than £100 don't bother getting the E-100. If it is less than £100 (and you can afford it! ) get the E-100. Cheers
Guest Brody Posted August 22, 2003 Report Posted August 22, 2003 I have an e100 and have owned an SPV in the past and love the e100, the screen, buttons and general feel of the phone are much better but you pay a price for this. Buy one of the two phones for sure mate! Then dazzle your mates with the ability to play whole movies in divx or mpeg format!
Guest ceanth Posted August 22, 2003 Report Posted August 22, 2003 wont the battery get drained if you watch a whole movie?
Guest Brody Posted August 22, 2003 Report Posted August 22, 2003 Well, yeah it'll drain but it wont kill it completely!
