Does anyone know the best DVD ReWriter that's currently available. Ideally I'd like:

Max £250

Multiformat (+ & -)

As fast as a greased ferret (4X)

Internal

Don't care about software bundle as I already have Nero 5

I have an idea of the drive that suits from labourious internet searches, but I'd be interested in your opinions on the subject.

Cheers :)

Not sure about the hardware, but DVD X Copy is the best

I got one on Friday for £135, it does:

DVD-r 4x

DVD+r 2.4x

and rw's at 2.4x.

I avoided buying the NEC, which did both at 4x (£7 cheaper) as I heard that it was very fussy with media.

Both prices are oem's, so no cables/software - just the jumper.

Both of those were from www.aria.co.uk.

The Sony one from Ebuyer is http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/in...oduct_uid=47733

If you're looking for closer to the £250 mark, avoid the Retail Boxes where you can get OEMs as they add on about £50 to a price without adding any functionality/features. (Except a £3 IDE cable and maybe a blank CD).

Excellent, thanks for the advice. I have my eye on one of the TDK models. Should make a final choice soon.

Though saying that the Sony DW-U10A does look good. Shame the Sony DRU-510A isn't a bit cheaper.

With a limit of £250 you can get the DRU-510A easily. At Dabs.com its a mere £193.87, including all the unnecessary software.

And many people report it to be great, if a little finicity on discs. Myself I've gone for a Pioneer 106 which is also liked by quite a few people.

There's also one which goes at 8x (Forgot who made it :)) and I believe NEC are planning to release one soon as well, so you've got plenty of choice at the moment.

I finally got a Sony DRU-510A and a pack of 10 Nanya 4x DVD-R from http://www.lynxdv.co.uk/

The DVD±RW cost £179.99 8) and the DVD-R cost £10.40. Free delivery!

Expecting them tomorrow. Can't wait! :)

I bought a Pioneer 106 (oem version of A06) a few weeks ago and its gr8 :). Around £120 a bargain!

The DRU510A has given me nothing but grief since I installed it. It doesn't seem to recognise DVDs in any form!!! Even the ones that are compatible on the Sony website. Even done a full XP wipe and reinstall with SP1 update and a fireware update for the DVDRW.

Got Sony support on the case but I desperately hope I got a bum unit and haven't paid £180 on a brick that my system can't support.

It's never easy, is it?

'tis a shame, because Sony products are usually great. Hopefully their support is decent - never had to contact them, despite owning about 10 Sony products (not including batteries and blank media).

i heard the sony drives do have compatibility issues etc, i went for the pioneer cus i knew there were good (m8's reviews)

The person I taked to at Sony support was very good. Asked intelligent questions and didn't try to fob me off with technobabble. They've taken all my details so I'll have to see how good the follow up support is.

As far as compatibility issues are concerned the only compatibility issues I came across in the many reviews I read were with media. I needed to know your mate, foxy11!

If I have to get a refund because (say) I've got an incompatible motherboard then I won't get all my money back (I think it's non-refundable p&p and software costs minus costs if the product isn't in a resaleable condition, ie box ripped etc). It's a bit hit and miss when you spend a lot of money on an item which has a chance of not working with your system and you'll be out of pocket if you return it. It's happened to me before with a SD card reader. Wasn't compatible with my ASUS motherboard. I took it back to PC World who steadfastly refused to refund me because it worked on a Packard Bell in the shop (my Mesh PC is way superior to a PB!).

I'll get a replacement drive through Sony, hopefully, which WILL work (optimism, got to love it) and everything will be OK.... :?

If you weren't warned of the compatibility issues (and you can prove these) beforehand then you have 30 days to return the product for a full refund including outgoing p&p as long as you return the entire order. (You will probably be made liable by the vendor for return p&p.)

I checked it out on a mates computer with the same result. Doesn't recognize DVDs of any kind so I'm pretty confident it's a hardware fault and not software. Phew!
