Guest Brody Posted August 23, 2003 Report Posted August 23, 2003 Hey, i've just replaced the mobo, ram and cpu on my home pc and when i boot it up i get an error saying error loading operating system. I went through the stages of reinstalling xp and when it restarts i still get the error, any ideas? Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest casper508 Posted August 23, 2003 Report Posted August 23, 2003 A friend had this problem. I think it was something to do with BIOS not correctly recognizing the HD size. He had to change his BIOS chip. Cas

Guest Brody Posted August 23, 2003 Report Posted August 23, 2003 A new BIOS chip? But its a brand new mobo! I'd have thought it'd be compatible? Are u suggesting a different mobo?Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest mark_g_james Posted August 23, 2003 Report Posted August 23, 2003 A new BIOS chip? But its a brand new mobo! I'd have thought it'd be compatible? It's probably because the BIOS is incorrectly recognising the number of clusters, size, etc. on your HD. Make sure that the BIOS is set to auto detect these things and reinstall the OS. If you still continue to get the same error (after installing again) then manually enter the HD settings into the BIOS - they should be printed on the disk itself. Reinstall. If you still continue to get the error, check: 1) The IDE cable you are using is the correct speed for the drive (unlikely to be wrong though), and that it's plugged in correctly. 2) Download memtest86 to test your memory. 3) Re-format the disk and try again (if you haven't re-formatted it for the other installs), remembering to fdisk it to hell before running the format. 4) cry  Let us know if that helps :?
Guest Brody Posted August 23, 2003 Report Posted August 23, 2003 I formatted during XP install, no luck, i disconected CD drives, no luck, BIOS is already set to aut, no luck, i'll try manually setting BIOS...
Guest Brody Posted August 23, 2003 Report Posted August 23, 2003 Hmm, it seems that Award 4.5 BIOS and IBM HD partitions over 33 gig dont work so i'll make a smaller partition and see what happens...
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted August 23, 2003 Report Posted August 23, 2003 Tried updating the BIOS? My Abit board has an award BIOS and a 40Gig IBM running fine...
Guest Brody Posted August 23, 2003 Report Posted August 23, 2003 I'll try it, typical if a new mobo has old BIOS on it! :?
Guest Brody Posted August 23, 2003 Report Posted August 23, 2003 Updated with new BIOS (onyl a few days old) and still no luckl :) Any more suggestions?
Guest mark_g_james Posted August 23, 2003 Report Posted August 23, 2003 you've tested the memory :?: what is the exact error your getting, a blue screen of death? include the hex error codes so we can debug it :)
Guest Brody Posted August 23, 2003 Report Posted August 23, 2003 I disconnected my second 10 gig HD and XP installation now works :? Weird one that. I'll complete the installation and then reconnect the slave drive to see the outcome but it seems that my problems are cured. Thanks for all the suggestions!
Guest siu99spj Posted August 26, 2003 Report Posted August 26, 2003 Based on that just make sure your HDD's have all the jumpers in the right places. although Cable select can work, I tend to like manually forcing them to Master and Slave. I know you've probably done it, but its best to cover everything...
Guest Brody Posted August 26, 2003 Report Posted August 26, 2003 Yeah, mine are set to Master and Slave and where before changing the mobo too! Its a weird one!
Guest mark_g_james Posted August 26, 2003 Report Posted August 26, 2003 Yeah, mine are set to Master and Slave and where before changing the mobo too! Its a weird one! You don't have any RAID enabled chipsets on there do you? does it work if you connect the second drive to IDE2 as a master? it's all very weird! new technology, pah! :)
