Guest londonlad Posted August 23, 2003 Report Posted August 23, 2003 When i say wap i mean then kind of simple one you get on nokia and SE oh yeah, can i use my spv as a portable hard drive, you know those keyring one with 32megs in em?
Guest martin Posted August 23, 2003 Report Posted August 23, 2003 Yep, the SPV contains both Internet software and WAP software. I think its WAP 1.2 I don't know what the key ring this is but the SPV uses SD/MMC cards if thats any help.
Guest Maverick Posted August 23, 2003 Report Posted August 23, 2003 Yep... SPV usually comes with an 8 or 16MB SD card (But u can buy a 256mb SD card for £50).. You can use it as a portable hard drive.. the only drawback is: * The ActiveSync software, which is used to copy data is very slow. * It converts Office docs into Pocket equivalent... you have to disable it
Guest zeta101 Posted August 25, 2003 Report Posted August 25, 2003 hmmm i think what the guy is asking when it talks about the USB flash memory keyrings is the ability to plug them into any PC (that has win 98SE or above, i think) and have the memory show up as a extra drive WITHOUT having to install software or special USB drivers. This means u could use it on public PCs like at university or work. I dont think you can do this with the phone, but you might be able to get a mini SD card reader that does...ie ive seen a SanDisk one, it like a USB keyring but has a slot for SD/MMC memory, i dont know if it works like i explained without special dirvers however.
Guest Lojt Posted August 26, 2003 Report Posted August 26, 2003 Actually, all keyrings i have seen required a driver for win98. Only worked directly with 2000 and XP.

The "SanDisk Cruzer" - there was a guy on ebay selling 256mb cards for about £50 with one of these drives thrown in. You don't need any additional drivers on most modern OSes for the system to see this drive, it works in exactly the same way as the USB key-drives. It's useful for copying stuff to the SPV because it is quicker than the ActiveSync / Serial connection (the port on the bottom of the phone is Serial), and you can use it in the same way as a regular USB key-drive. Connecting the SPV to a computer does require additional software to be installed, usually ActiveSync. In theory it would be possible for someone to do a program just for file copy, but they would need to distrbute part of ActiveSync which MS probably wouldn't be too happy with! In short it's probably easier to buy a USB key-drive or a SanDisk Cruzer rather than try and use your SPV for this purpose.
Guest zeta101 Posted August 27, 2003 Report Posted August 27, 2003 @keystroke I said win 98SE ;) second edition :)
Guest londonlad Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 so that people can carry word documents on their fone and goto any computer Window 2000 or XP and use the documents? i havent a problem with the speed of the cradle, my computers got an SD slot built-in
Guest Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 so that people can carry word documents on their fone and goto any computer Window 2000 or XP and use the documents? You could keep documents on the SD card in the phone, but to then transfer those documents to another computer you would need to do one of two things: Either 1) Remove the SD card from the phone and use a SD card-reader connected to the machine (either one that's built-in or a portable that you bring with you). This requires no drivers or software on modern OSes (XP etc). or 2) Connect the SPV to the machine directly (USB via cradle or cable, IR or Serial). This machine would need ActiveSync installed to perform the file copy. Set-up a "Guest Partnership" when it asks you; it then won't sync phone book etc. but will allow you to copy files to/from the phone. Personally I think that option 1) is less hassle, either buy a large SD card with a SanDisk Cruzer or get a USB SD card-reader if you already have a suitable SD card.
Guest londonlad Posted August 29, 2003 Report Posted August 29, 2003 yeah 1 seems the best option, i hate carrying floppy discs and not all my uni computers have got cd-rw drives. thanks matt
Guest Pondrew Posted August 30, 2003 Report Posted August 30, 2003 I recently had to rewrite my CV which I did on laptop. On realising that I had neither internet access nor a 3.5inch disk to carry the cv with me (the laptop was borrowed and going back) I decided to try and use my SPV to carry it. Sure enough, Smart Explorer and the laptop talked just fine over the infrared and within no time the word file that was my CV was stored comfortably on the SPV. Voila, the SPV as a portable storage device!
Guest Posted September 1, 2003 Report Posted September 1, 2003 Good point - you don't need ActiveSync installed to send a file over IR (although obviously not all machines have IR ports!). This works in XP, although I'm not sure about 2000 and earlier versions (ME, 98, etc).

Guest fraser Posted September 1, 2003 Report Posted September 1, 2003 Nah, Mav, to find a laptop without IR, you'd need to go way back to the days when "laptop" was debatable. More like "PC with handle". All of them for the past 6-7 years have one. IR is a good shout, but if you don't have IR available, simply carrry the sync cable around with you. ActiveSync 3.7 is a free download, so install it on any machines you need it on. Doesn't even require a reboot IIRC. Remember to put the phone as guest, otherwise all your data will be synced to the shared PC. I'll be buying one of those USB readers though, sounds like an ideal way to get data on to the phone while away from home, where downloading would be expensive. You could have a bank of mp3/wav files on your own webserver, and change what you have at any internet cafe. Cool for holidays etc.
