Guest mcwarre Posted August 23, 2003 Report Posted August 23, 2003 I have installed a wireless network :) and it has been set up fine and I can see files etc on other computers (after figuring out to change firewall settings). I tried to coonect to the net from the client; it will dial the connection (ADSL) but I cannot get IE6 to look at anything ;) . Everything works fine on the host PC. I seem to remember something about possibly needing 2 NICs as my ADSL Modem is external; one for the client to talk to the host and one to talk to the modem? Or am I talking S**te? As usual Help in XP is not giving any answers; please help :!: :!: :!:
Guest Gorskar Posted August 23, 2003 Report Posted August 23, 2003 Oh joy - ICS :) How is your adsl modem connected? If its a USB modem then there should be no need for 2 NICs Best thing is to assign IP addresses manually Check the settings for your client: Right click network neighbourhood - properties - click on your "Local Area Connection" card - Change settings - Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) - Properties. Client PC - IP address 192.168.0.2 Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 Default gateway - 192.168.0.1 Use the following DNS server address = 192.168.0.1 Host PC - IP address 192.168.0.1 Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0 Can change the IP address to something else in that subnet if you prefer. Personally I use an ADSL router to share my internet connection - its a much neater solution ;)
Guest mcwarre Posted August 24, 2003 Report Posted August 24, 2003 Oh joy - ICS :)Cheers Gorskar. I have the settings the same as you but still no luck. Personally I use an ADSL router to share my internet connection - its a much neater solution ;) What one would you suggest and how much matey? Ta in advance
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted August 24, 2003 Report Posted August 24, 2003 Netgear, D-link, Belkin, Linksys are all popular, and quality more or less in that order starting from NG being the best. You're looking at about £50-£70 for a decent router. As for your problem, try changing the subnet mask on all your boxes to 255.255.0.0, i think thats the correct mask for 192.168.0.* Also try browing by ip (Start > Run > cmd > "ping www.modaco.com" to get the ip address), if that works try manually putting the DNS server ip's into you NIC's network settings. These can be found by doing a "ipconfig /all" from your host machine. Good luck mate.
Guest Palindrome Posted August 24, 2003 Report Posted August 24, 2003 Which firewall do you have? It may need to be configured to allow ICS connections (in addition to the file and printer sharing). You can also try turning of XPs built in firewall (but I doubt that will do any good).
Guest mcwarre Posted August 24, 2003 Report Posted August 24, 2003 Mono. Cheers. Had tried that no luck. :) Subnet Masks. Unless I am mistaken: IP XXX.*.*.* Mask 255.0.0.0 Class A IP XXX.XXX.*.* Mask 255.255.0.0 Class B IP XXX.XXX.XXX.* Mask 255.255.255.0 Class C I have a 802.11g Netgear PCMCIA card and PCI card; their cheapest router is ~£88.  Tried setting the clients Default Gateway and DNS to the hosts address. Nout coming out!!! Palindrome. I have Zone Alarm and Norton. They have both been configured to allow the static addresses of the other and internet sharing; the problem still exists with all the firewalls turned off :?: :?: Cheers fellas. Back to the drawing board
