Guest kingdom master Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 3 are planning to buy in some smartphones one motorola due out soon using symbian but i would think a ms smartphones are in planning. would you leave orange if 3 launched one with full internet access. also three are launching a data card soon which will allow 400 kbprs in 3g area's or if using a handset as a modem 128 which is cool and aparently the time will come out of your free minutes when using a non premium dial up. what do you guys think would you leave?
Guest clv101 Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 Three's network would have to work better than it does now and their customer service would also have to improve significantly - how do you know they are planning 400kbps with a data card? Do you know which card they are looking at using? Any idea if they are planning full Internet access or is this hypothetical?
Guest kyrkesmith Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 I've been with Orange for about 4 years now, and I am pretty pleased with their service. I would definately consider leaving them if 3 launched an MS Smartphone, but I'd probably return to Orange once they had a similar deal. Depends how the service was with 3 though, I've heard it ain't great.
Guest londonlad Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 i bought a three fone (e808) and the fone is crap, right. but the service is even worse. you cant do nothing but call and text unless your in a STRONG 3g area. you need two lines at the status bar. i live in london, as you can probably tell, ive had the two line for half a day in three weeks! thinking of using the internet? not unless you got the two lines symbol (STRONG). trust me its a rare site at the moment, the truth is the network isnt really ready. but by the time it is, orange will be as well. motorola a920, wicked fone. but spv is king.
Guest kingdom master Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 three data card! the other info, i was at the recent 3 meeting discussing the future plans for three especially the data and future handsets and services. pay as you go is due soon at around £179.99 with voucher values at £15 there will be three new motorola handsets possibly one wont be released. the new ericsson and two new nec phones.
Guest DamianJauregui Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 So, three motorola handsets, two necs and a SonyEricsson. What about the Nokia? :) I wonder if it's just not good enough now, what with no video calling, etc.
Guest kingdom master Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 nokia have a three handset but arent prepared to release it yet. i did hear there goner stick with vodafone 3g service rather than three which is due in 2005. i think that for them it would be a better option and safer as voda will have a greater coverage from the start.
Guest Firaas Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 3 are planning to buy in some smartphones one motorola due out soon using symbian but i would think a ms smartphones are in planning. There's apparently nothing formal going on but Three have invited many manufacturers to show their phones, so it is highly possible that one of them will be a Smartphone...
Guest clv101 Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 three data card! the other info, i was at the recent 3 meeting discussing the future plans for three especially the data and future handsets and services. pay as you go is due soon at around £179.99 with voucher values at £15 there will be three new motorola handsets possibly one wont be released. the new ericsson and two new nec phones. Interesting - any idea which manufacture the data card is? What packed switched bearers Three are going to offer? Will it be charged per MB? What rate? Lots of questions - but this potentially big news. Few hundred kbps mobile internet is what 3G's all about.
Guest kingdom master Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 I think it was billed at a per minute cost and came outta ur free minutes however knowing what excisting networks get away with i would think three would rethink this pricing scheme, ive got another meeting in november so i hope to know for sure then
Guest kyrkesmith Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 Sounds like some sort of CSD then.
Guest kyrkesmith Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 Or was it across UMTS? That's got a theoretical speed of 2Mbps!
Guest kyrkesmith Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 In reality, you're right. Breaks down like this: 2Mb/s is the maximum "in fixed applications", 384kb/s is the maximum when a device is stationary or moving at pedestrian speed, and 128kb/s is the maximum in a car. Still pretty fast for an internet connection.
Guest DamianJauregui Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 So it all depends on the hand-over rate, i.e. the more handovers the more bandwidth gets used locating the device, etc?
Guest kyrkesmith Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 Indeed it does. Don't really get why a fixed installation can go so much quicker than a stationary device. Perhaps it's got something to do with power?
Guest kingdom master Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 The tests have been getting speeds of 400, i would think they will cap the speed though, i think we wont see 2 til 4g is released. one thing i dont get, why am i getting an average speed of 114 kbps from my spv when using it as a infra red modem?
Guest kyrkesmith Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 Well, 115kb/s is the theoretical top speed for GPRS, and I've noticed Windows has this habit of reporting the theoretical top as your current speed. e.g. at the moment, it is reporting my modem as going at 576Kbps (to be pedantic, that should be a lowercase k), even though I've just got a couple of MoDaCo windows, MSN, and Outlook.
Guest londonlad Posted August 29, 2003 Report Posted August 29, 2003 i just ordered A920 (they're for sale according to loads of mobile phone websites). dont know when it will arrive. Doesnt have bluetooth  and it is pretty chunky  . but good specs.
Guest londonlad Posted August 29, 2003 Report Posted August 29, 2003 are going to provide full internet access? at the moment its just their 'walled' content. its available in australia, they can use google, we can only download crappy comedy clips.
