Guest rockdoc Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 noticed yesterday that I have a couple of small scratches on the screen of my mio 8380. Just figured out what caused them I think. The four corners of the screen half of the clamshell have wee rubber stoppers inserted in holes that presumably are there to lift the "lid" off the phone slighty. I think they are recessed too much. This AM I tried the phone in an old carrying case I had for my SE 68m which was a tight fit. When I took the phone out there were several smudges on the screen that correspond to positions of keys on the phone. I guess the keys pick up some grit from fingers and that is transferred. Also I noticed that two of the rubber stoppers had a small piece cutout of them....aha the screen must move ever so slightly in a lateral fashion. If two much pressure is put on it and it slips sideways.....voila...scratch city!! I am now contemplating cutting up an old writeright screen protector and seeing if it doesn't hurt the screen visibility. Anyways word of caution....don't use tight carrying cases.
Guest rockdoc Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 OK I tried putting on a ipaq writeright screenprotector. Works like a dang...virtually no harm to screen visibility. It is quite easy to trim the screen protector while in place with a razor knife.
Guest kyrkesmith Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 Does it hide the scratches you've already made?
Guest rockdoc Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 Yeah, surprisingly enough it does. The scratches weren't that bad to start with but kick myself for not having done this right from the get go.
Guest homesik_alien Posted August 29, 2003 Report Posted August 29, 2003 I have yet to take the original protective layer off both the internal and external displays. Had the phone for two weeks. What I want is some studs to place on the backside so that I can place the phone on any surface without it getting scratched.
Guest kyrkesmith Posted August 29, 2003 Report Posted August 29, 2003 I should probably put on on my SPV E100 - I've got one tiny scratch, only visible if the screen is totally clean, which in invariably isn't. I don't know if a screen protector would work though, because of the curvature of the screen.

Having looked at the SPV screen I don't think the curvature is too much to create a huge problem. The writerights are fairly cheap so it probably is worth a go.
Guest mar9118 Posted August 29, 2003 Report Posted August 29, 2003 The SPV E100, SAP, HTC Tanager has a PC (polycarbonate) screen protector which can be polished for minor scratches while the Mitac Mio 8380 screen is made of soft plastic that gets scratch easily :)
Guest kyrkesmith Posted August 29, 2003 Report Posted August 29, 2003 How would you go about polishing it then to remove a minor scratch?
Guest mar9118 Posted August 30, 2003 Report Posted August 30, 2003 There is a German product called Displex (Handy-Display Politur) available in most mobile phone stores that does the trick :)
Guest Terwin Posted August 30, 2003 Report Posted August 30, 2003 Yep, it's much like the scratches to a laptop screen from keyboard chaifing. I need to get some kind of protector for mine too before it becomes noticable.
