Guest Uzay Posted August 29, 2003 Report Posted August 29, 2003 this mail i received today from [email protected] Hi Uzay I just installed you home screen that uses the clock plugin. Its excellent, I've no idea how you've done that, i.e how you got different plugins showing per tab. Anyway, nice job. As you've made it a download, can I put a link to it on my web site or put it on my web site ? Cheers Billy. damned, this if fun....
Guest drblow Posted August 29, 2003 Report Posted August 29, 2003 But, what - we still have to buy the analogue clock plugin in order to use the skin?? I'm vehemently opposed to anybody charging for skins/themes/plugins. I know there is alot of work goes into producing a plugin - but there is a hell of alot of work goes on every day by the tireless modaco skinners (like yourself Uzay!! ) that is all FREE. I don't want to start really crying & sounding like a skinflint - but if the culture of smartphone starts to allow this to happen, we run the risk of charges for skins catching on & I see that as nothing but total disrespect for the amazing FREE skins provided by the likes of Midnight, Richie M, Brody... etc etc - and not forgetting all the freeware apps we all use - like taskmanager, explorer etc etc - again ALL FREE. Down with this sort of thing!! P.S. Pleasae don't take these negative comments as any reflection on your work on the skin Uzay. Your work is great & free - it's the madbeetle plugin I'm guffing off about!!
Guest chucky.egg Posted August 29, 2003 Report Posted August 29, 2003 I agree with drblow, keep it free A plug-in I guess takes more effort than a "normal" skin, but if they start charging for plug-ins people will only rip them off anyway. Donate the plug-in to the community, maybe MoDaCo can have some sort of honorary title for people that donate this sort of stuff?

I do not agree, I must say, I bought severall applications: imov, allexplorer, notbad and now the maddbeetle plugin. For testing allexplorer I got allcalculator for free, for me it's been well spend money, besides all the freeware and shareware I got from the net. And i got great support on the apps aswell... So if you have a little money to spend, support the developers ???
Guest chucky.egg Posted August 29, 2003 Report Posted August 29, 2003 Uzay - no offence meant! I do believe in supporting the developers, and I've already bought half a dozen things after only having the phone a few days. I don't mind paying for the stuff at all, but I doubt I would pay for a plug-in unless it did something really useful (MSN buddies list would be cool, for example). I don't knw what's involved in creating a plug-in, so maybe I'm talking out my @rse! Tell us what's involved so we understand better!
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted August 29, 2003 Report Posted August 29, 2003 I disagree too, madbeetle has every right to charge for their hard work, as do skin designers, if you disagree, don't use it. Don't forget madbeetle have to cover costs like signing etc. too... P
Guest chucky.egg Posted August 29, 2003 Report Posted August 29, 2003 Only sharing my opinion, not trying to p1ss anyone off! I'm not saying he should not charge for it, but I wouldn'y buy it (I wouldn't rip off a copy to use either though) If he wrote a Buddies plug-in I might well pay a few quid for that...

I just think it's a bit naff to come to MoDaCo, where you can get loads of free skins, apps etc & where you can get a FREE analogue clock plugin, and start charging for something like this!! I personally didn't buy this plugin for these reasons & I would refuse to pay for similar products in the future. & I'm not trying to really slag off madbeetle (whoever you are?? sorry guy..! ) - I'm sure that whoever it is feels perfectly justified & if they get results - fair go! I just think that one of the best things about owning a smartphone is the sense of community that eminates from MoDaCo. Which is mostly created by the sharing of FREE software, skins, ideas etc. Plus I can't help but think it's kind of like going into a shop offering absolutely free socks, & trying to flog socks!!
Guest chucky.egg Posted August 29, 2003 Report Posted August 29, 2003 I just think that one of the best things about owning a smartphone is the sense of community that eminates from MoDaCo. I had a conversation just like this on my-symbian.com (used to have a P800) and got shouted down in a major way. Sales pitches are rare here anyway so it's all cool with me really. I dont want to buy it, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't or couldn't sell it.
Guest chucky.egg Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 Quite by chance I stumbled across Uzay's Palm homescreen that started this thread off... WOW! I take back what I said before... it's such a great homescreen that I have ordered the clock plugin ($1.95 as it turns out - ) just to see it at its best. :me-eating-my-words:
Guest lutzh Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 i can say by personal experience that madbeetle is taking time to help people to run his plugin- so its worth the 2 bugs! the analogue plug in did not work on the app locked mio (even with the code signing in it which costs money as you may remember...) and billy mailed me at least 20 times to make it running somehow because i wanted that analogue clock on my mio so badly. thanks to modaco-users the app lock on the mio is gone so the plug in runs smart and smooth now. and it looks great so its fook!n worth the money, really! remember paying money for covers on your nokia? or crazy ringtones and logos on it? i never did but there's a hell lot of people doing so. thats bullshit pure compared to giving money for somone else's brain work like in this case... and its less compared to the tips we give every nite in the pub, right? just because the waitress has nice hair (or so...)... cheers, lutz
Guest Tosh Posted September 4, 2003 Report Posted September 4, 2003 Hi Uzay, you stirred up quite a discussion with your post. I also use the Madbeetle plugin on my homescreen. I can do a homescreen (just), but can't program, so I paid my $1.99 to someone who can - my decision. Any chance of us all seeing a shot of your screen or a post of the same to see what impressed Madbeetle? Tosh
