Guest spencer Posted August 31, 2003 Report Posted August 31, 2003 Hi all, I live in Australia and I am thinking about buying a Qtek 7070. I looked at Harvey Norman and the salesman said that for voice calls you can be on any network but to access internet and email you have to be on Optus because the Qtek 7070 phone is only compatible with Optus WAP and GPRS at present (I'm with Telstra). After searching through the forum I've seen other people enquiring about Telstra WAP and GPRS settings for other smartphones. My question is does any know if I would actually be able to use the Qtek 7070 on the Telstra network (WAP and GPRS connection) for internet and email? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Victor
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted August 31, 2003 Report Posted August 31, 2003 welcome to the site :) Try asking jenneth as she's one of our Austrailian members, she may be able to help. I'm interested to know if the sales guy is right about the phone being SIM unlocked as this is not normally the case :?
Guest martin Posted August 31, 2003 Report Posted August 31, 2003 Maybe it was the salesman who couldn't get the QTEK 7070 to work with Telstra GPRS as there should be no problem setting up your phone for GPRS on ANY network. Take a look at the GPRS settings repository (particularly page4) for more details. As awarner said, the only thing that would prevent the phone being used on another network is the SIM lock which I'm sure you are aware of from other phones purchased on contract. If the salesman said that you can put a Telstra SIM in the phone and make voice calls then it can't be SIM locked to Optus. Are you buying the phone out of contract ? Many people SIM unlock the canary/tanager models themself but it means downgrading the bootloader. Oh and jenneth can be found on www.jenneth.info

Thanks, Victor I don't know about Telstra, but I've used Vodafone settings for GPRS with the Qtek 7070 with no problems. Telstra supports GPRS, so there's no reason why you couldn't use Telstra GPRS on the Qtek, particularly as it's not SIM-locked. The problem then is just finding the correct data settings such as the Access Point. I wouldn't put too much faith in what the Harvey Norman salesman said - from my experience many of them aren't too bright and will pretend to know about something when they really don't know anything (no offence to anyone that works for Harvey Norman - I'm sure you're the exception :))
