Guest elvie Posted August 31, 2003 Report Posted August 31, 2003 Orange has been driving me mad, and getting me totally bamboozled for the last week or so... Until last week, I was happily using my SPV to browse the internet, check e-mail, train times etc via GPRS. That was because approx. 2 months ago whilst talking to Orange regarding another matter, I asked what GPRS package I was on, I was told twice, [i asked the operator to repeat what she said], that I was on a £4.00 unlimited GPRS package. Last week, talking to orange once again, I asked the operator to confirm that I was on the £4.00 unlimited GPRS package and was told that there was no such thing, and there had never been. This surprised me as the previous operator had told me twice that I was on the package, and because my girlfriend had got a e100 a month ago, and the girl in the shop had told her that she was on the same package. The next day I rang orange again, and was told that yes, I was on a unlimited GRPS & WAP package [Orange Access Pack], and that the operator from yesterday was incorrect. Great, so the 2nd operator was wrong..... No he wasn't!! I looked at my July Orange invoice, and there is a £3.40 charge for the Orange Access Pack, and a £6.96 charge for GPRSdata. [2.7196mb]. But I thought that I was on an unlimited package? Why was I getting charged for the GPRS data? Another call to Orange reveled that the Unlimited GPRS/WAP Orange Access Pack only applies to Orange WAP sites, as soon as you use the internet explorer or the inbox to send/receive e-mails you are charged!! I still really don't know what I'm getting for my money. Can any body tell me what the real situation is, I'm so confused. There is no documentation that I can find that spells out exactly what the Access pack entitles you to. Why is Orange being so devious and misleading over this issue. My girlfriend went into another Orange shop yesterday, and again told that with the Access Pack, she could happily browse all internet sites, check email etc. and not be charged!! What is the real Deal?
Guest mattscholey Posted August 31, 2003 Report Posted August 31, 2003 This matter is very confusing for all SPV owners. Orange Open Access gives you unlimited access to WAP and WAP over GPRS. It does not however include the internet over GPRS. So basically your WAP is unlimited. Anything else will cost you. To take advantage of your free WAP point Internet Explorer at wsp://orange.multimedia/ This is Orange's WAP homepage. Hope this helps, Matt
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted August 31, 2003 Report Posted August 31, 2003 I almost fell for that one (and I posted it a while back) basically it took six calls to different people to get the correct info out of them. As Matt says it was only for WAP over GPRS
Guest amo Posted August 31, 2003 Report Posted August 31, 2003 Access pack = Wap usage (via gprs (gprs doesnt nescessarily mean it is applicable for use with PIE) or csd) GPRS bundles = Unrestricted gprs usage - i.e. for use with the SPV, and p800. The access pack is limited to the Wap protocol only and regardless of if you go for the gprs or csd connection option the inclusive allowance is strictly for the wap protocol only. GPRS bundles, cost more as it is not limited to protocols, so you can use it for html, msn, or whatever else. (Perhaps a mod could sticky this to avoid any other confusion for the future)
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted August 31, 2003 Report Posted August 31, 2003 Better still perhaps Orange CS could get their own info correct and be taught the differences so they actually know what they are talking about :) The confusion arrises because a lot of CS do not know what GPRS really is, all they see is that you can have WAP over GPRS so they think that then means all GPRS is free because they think it's just a different type of WAP  As for a sticky it would be a good idea, problem it though is most people will have this offer before visiting the site.
Guest mattscholey Posted August 31, 2003 Report Posted August 31, 2003 As for a sticky it would be a good idea, problem it though is most people will have this offer before visiting the site. I joined this forum months before I got my SPV, and it was great for researching the phone, and confusing plans like the Access Pack, and deciding the best way to buy it. If you have the Orange Open Access Pack (if you, like me, are on one of the new 'square deals' it's included free), and want to make sure your connecting the right way to get your WAP for free then make sure your settings are as follows. Press Programs>Settings>Data Connections. Your data connections should read: Internet Connection: You probably want 'Orange GPRS' although it doesn't matter with regards to the access pack. Work Connection: Automatic WAP Connection: Either Orange WAP (connects to WAP over GPRS) or Orange CSD WAP (connects to WAP over dial-up). Secure WAP connection: None available. Please do correct me if the above are wrong. Matt
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted August 31, 2003 Report Posted August 31, 2003 You can always ask Orange to disable GPRS that way you can only connect to WAP :) That's what I did, saves any confusion.
Guest mattscholey Posted August 31, 2003 Report Posted August 31, 2003 That's ok, except doesn't it mean you can't browse the internet until you get GPRS re-enabled. Matt
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted August 31, 2003 Report Posted August 31, 2003 Yes :) I don't browse the internet on my phone due to the cost of GPRS so I went for the WAP option.
Guest mattscholey Posted August 31, 2003 Report Posted August 31, 2003 I don't browse the internet on my phone due to the cost of GPRS so I went for the WAP option. Go to http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewtopic.php...9917&highlight=, a topic I've just started to discuss the cost of internet access, and if there are cheaper ways of doing it. Sorry if this is getting a bit off the topic. Matt
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted August 31, 2003 Report Posted August 31, 2003 I saw your post but have no real useful info about reducing the cost of GPRS hence why I don't use internet access on my phone.
Guest martin Posted August 31, 2003 Report Posted August 31, 2003 The free WAP over GPRS service requires the use of access point name orangewap and this APN can be applied to any GPRS capable phone containing WAP software. On the SPV orangewap is allocated to the WAP connection which uses WSP. WAP over GSM is also part of the free WAP promotion. The GPRS APN orangeinternet gives complete internet access and is allocated to the SPV Internet connection which uses HTTP. The use of this APN is not part of the access pack. You can force the use of orangewap by unticking 'auto detect settings' and making 'Select Network=WAP Network' in Internet explorer. Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest elvie Posted September 1, 2003 Report Posted September 1, 2003 You can force the use of orangewap by unticking 'auto detect settings' and making 'Select Network=WAP Network' in Internet explorer. Does this mean that you'll only be able to view WAP pages? Been using the search box on wap.orange.co.uk and it produces results to non-wap pages!! Is orange trying to trick us into using GPRS thinking we're using WAP?
