Guest nickcornaglia Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 I just received my Mio in the mail today. NICE! Here are a few quick impressions with a few questions mixed in. I was hoping someone could help me out. 1) Not as big as everyone made it out to be. It's a nice size. Not the smallest phone in the world...but not a huge brick either. I'm already comfortable with it. 2) The camera kicks A$$ compares to the SPVs camera. The motion is quick. The image is captured instantly instead of 30 seconds later. Video is pretty cool and not that choppy at all. One good reason I switched to the Mitac. 3) The screen is awsome compared to the SPV. (I never held an e100 so I can't compare the two. 4) The buttons are very comfortable, though I miss being able to "feel around" for certain keys. The Mitac's buttons are too flat for that. 5) Fast! Fast! Fast! (so far). It did go into Glue Mode once...but a reboot cleared whatever that was. 6) I like the asian characters on the buttons. Makes the phone seem like it's right out of that video with Michael & Janet Jackson from a few years back. 7) You have to have the earpiece right over your ear to hear the other person. Have to get used to that. I left my sync cable at the office like a big dope so I didn't do anything with it yet but I do have a couple of questions. Q1) Is there a way to change the time format on the outer LCD? I switched the phone to 12 hour but the time on the outer LCD remains at 24 hour time. Q2) There is a huge discrepency between the Signal Strength on the outer LCD and the main screen. I get 1 bar on the main screen (normal for inside my home) but all 4 bars on the outer screen. Q3) Was the phone supposed to come with a US charger adapter? Mine only came with the huge 3-prong'd monster which I assume is HK and UK. Does anyone know where I can get the official US attachment?
Guest w4rmk Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 I also got my Mio a few days ago. So far I have not been able to figure out how to change the outside display to 12 hour time. My guess is that it can't be changed, at least not without an update from Mitac. My charger came with a small 220v to 120v adapter. If yours was missing this, you can pick one up at Radio Shack.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 Try a sync and charge cable from PC-Mobile
Guest nickcornaglia Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 The sync and charge cable is on my list of things to buy today. But I still need a AC charger for updates. I went to Radioshack yesterday and bought a variable voltage charger that I can set to 5v. But I can't find the correct end that plugs into the charger. Anyone know what letter end that would be? (A, B, C, D???). I'd rather have the one that fits on the standard charger though. Anyone know where to get that?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 But I still need a AC charger for updates. Why? the sync and charge cable gives you the power for when you update, That's all I use whenever I update or is the mio different to the SPV in regards to charging?.
Guest Pintguinness Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 I've got the same problems with the external display (time format and signal strength). Have not figured out how to change them. My other problems: I've abandoned the hands free "head phones" for making/taking calls as people say there is a big echo when I use them (yes, I've tried turning down the earpiece volume). The volume on the ringer - even at the loudest setting - is hard for me to hear. I often miss calls because I didn't hear the phone ring. Tasks - I keep notes on tasks. Have not found a way to view/edit the notes on tasks. Other than that - love the form factor of this device.
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 I think I may have to get me one ;-) P
Guest nickcornaglia Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 Why? the sync and charge cable gives you the power for when you update, That's all I use whenever I update or is the mio different to the SPV in regards to charging?. When I used to update my spv...I could never do it with the USB charge&sync cable. I thought it had to be done with the AC power. I may be wrong. I'll just buy the USB cables and see how that goes. Thanks. I really can't find an adapter that fits...it seems to be an odd size. But I'm still loving this phone! Highly recommended. And I didn't even sync it yet. I'll post more thoughts later.
Guest rockdoc Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 Definitely get the usb retractable charger/sync cable....it works like a dang and if you drag around a laptop with you when you travel anyways why have two appliances plugged in and charging when you can have just one? With regards to the ring....use the mitac app menu to setup sounds and assign a loud polyphonic to line 1. I currently have a few bars of Eleanor Rigby assigned and it is embarassingly loud (easily as loud as my p800).
Guest nickcornaglia Posted September 4, 2003 Report Posted September 4, 2003 I just ordered two USB Sync & Charge Cables today. And the car adapter. Application Unlocked my phone without a hitch. Installed the Mitac Software and tried a couple of the games. Then the battery died and I wont have the chargers for at least a few days. Life is not fair sometimes. :)
Guest yoos Posted September 4, 2003 Report Posted September 4, 2003 encece, From the handy little Electrical Guide database, which is used with the DataViewer program (both downloadable FREE on Handango) I was able to get the following info... Hope this helps...UK description.jpgChina picture A.jpgChina picture I.jpgUK-China picture G.jpgChina description 1.jpgChina description 2.jpg
Guest nickcornaglia Posted September 4, 2003 Report Posted September 4, 2003 Thanks Yoos.... The lettering I was talking about was actually the little end that plugs into the phone or cradle. I had an adapter that took multiple ends that had adjustable voltage. But I think I found a hardware store near me that has a UK to US adapter that will fit over the end until I get my cables in the mail. (UK same as HK I think since UK just set them free not too long ago! :) ) I'll keep you posted! Thanks Again. Nick
Guest nickcornaglia Posted September 4, 2003 Report Posted September 4, 2003 I found the coolest device (at SEARS) after going to about 8 stores...literally. Samsonite makes an adapter that will take and receive US, UK, Europe, Australia, Asian, etc. The cool part is that it's almost like a Swiss Army Knife, Turn a dial and different parts pop out. Charging Now! :) ;) :Dar1804whbe01.jpg
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 4, 2003 Report Posted September 4, 2003 nice :) How much did this cost?
Guest nickcornaglia Posted September 5, 2003 Report Posted September 5, 2003 US$14.00...it's a really impressive piece of industrial design.
