Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 A few months ago I approched PC-Mobile about the possibilities of manufacturing a camera extension cable, and now It's Here ;) PC-Mobile have now released the camera extension cable which includes a mount for fixing the camera to a tripod (a nice additional extra). The cable come in a very sturdy protective storage case which is a nice touch by PC-Mobile The cable is around 700mm long excluding connectors, the build looks and feels well made. I had some initial problems in regards to getting the cable to work but I found this was down to pugging the camera too far into the connector on the cable, all you have to do is plug it in so you hear a click any further the phone will either give you a driver error or not see the camera at all. Once I had sorted this out the fun started  This cable makes the camera more versatile so you can now take those more unusual pictures. The Bird cam pic below this was taken from inside the cage I may try and rig this up so I can monitor egg laying if my new male zebra finch is up to the job :) For those important steady shots there is a tripod mount on the camera connector which is a nice feature, unfortunately I did not have my tripod at hand so I was unable take any pics using this but it speaks for it's self on what it does. At the end of the day I can see myself having some real fun with this cable and now to see how much of an unusual shot I can take :D For details on purchasing the cable go to http://www.pc-mobile.net/spv.htmspcotp.jpgOut of the box.jpgNew Picture2.jpgCamera and SPV.jpgCamera pic of the phone (blurred).jpgBird cam.jpg
Guest cpt_andy Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 looks good! i can imagine that pictures taken with a tripod will be much sharper than normal. Cpt. Andy
Guest idavid Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 not to sound rude, but the thought of using the spv camera with a tripod...
Guest Maverick Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 Just a thought.. I wish some one makes an extenstion which lets us tilt and rotate the cam... rather than stick the cam at the end of a wire...
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 Just a thought.. I wish some one makes an extenstion which lets us tilt and rotate the cam I agree but the costs involved to develop it would not be economical unless there were guaranteed number of sales.
Guest Will Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 can you sync/use keyboard with the cable too? Will
Guest pisquee Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 so, now this is out, using MS Portrait to turn the SPV into a videophone is do-able ... dependant on GPRS that is.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 can you sync/use keyboard with the cable too? Will Sync no :) but as for keyboard unsure as I still do not have one ;)
Guest futaris Posted September 4, 2003 Report Posted September 4, 2003 You can probably still use the cable to sync via Serial, if you're so inclined. I don't WHY you'd want to, but you could. I assume the Cable only has the necessary serial and VCC lines connected to the Camera.
Guest hext Posted September 4, 2003 Report Posted September 4, 2003 hi, is the extension for the camera available in the philippines?
Guest fozzie Posted September 5, 2003 Report Posted September 5, 2003 Hi - welcome to the forum. As awarner said at the end of his review: "For details on purchasing the cable go to http://www.pc-mobile.net/spv.htm" If you look at the site you'll find that they ship to anywhere in the world :)
Guest XGEOX Posted September 6, 2003 Report Posted September 6, 2003 If you look at the site you'll find that they ship to anywhere in the world :) and i'd buy one, but the shipping costs nearly twice as much as the cable! ;) (to the UK) is there a UK supplier/reseller?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 7, 2003 Report Posted September 7, 2003 They have a reseller in the UK but I do not know if they have any in stock as yet, but I do not know if that changes the postage costs :? because I had mine sent to me direct :)
Guest isotone Posted November 3, 2003 Report Posted November 3, 2003 ahhh! i cannot for the life of me get me e100 to recognise the camera when its on the cable... tried putting it far in, just in after the click etc, sometimes the phone 'lights up' as tho it knows its just has something done to it, but still doesnt regonise the camera... anyone else had these probs? is it possible i have a duff cable? Thanks, Rich
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted November 3, 2003 Report Posted November 3, 2003 Nope read my review :) Seriously though, don't push the connector all the way in on the camera end as you will override the contacts. Push it in until you hear a faint click. Or another way push it in then pull back until you meet resistance.
Guest Simon Desser Posted November 3, 2003 Report Posted November 3, 2003 Ashley, I read your review and bought one, I too couldn't for the life of me get it working  I literally tried for hours on 2 phones doing everything you and the supplier suggested :!: They kindly sent me another one as we came to the conclusion the first one must be faulty :?: Again I spent the best part of an evening trying to get it working on 2 phones  I've now turned them into a nice bootlace tie
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted November 3, 2003 Report Posted November 3, 2003 Trying not to sound stupid but you did plug the camera in the right way round? I have noticed that you can actually plug it in back to front if you are not careful. If you want contact me via PM and arrange to send me the cables I will happily test them for you, that way you will know for defineate if they are faulty or not.
Guest isotone Posted November 4, 2003 Report Posted November 4, 2003 ahhh still trying. the right way round being - at the camera end, the lens is on the opposide side to the tripod mount at the phone end, the sticker that says 'top' on the plug is facing you, same side as the screen. i did put it in wrongly at the camera end at one point, that wont have screwed it up will it? i cant believe my desire to have a flashy periscope is causing me this much stress...!  :)
Guest utty Posted November 4, 2003 Report Posted November 4, 2003 Is this cable only compatable with the new spv phones ? My phone recognises the cable, but when i try to take a picture, i get the error message; 'Problem with camera driver' I have a original unlocked spv with rom 1.3.5.6 installed. Do i need to install a new driver, if so, were can i get it from.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted November 6, 2003 Report Posted November 6, 2003 I've had it working on the SPV and E-100 the problem you are getting is normally due to the camera being plugged in to far (as mentioned above) As I mentioned in my reply to Simon I am willing to test anyone's cable for them as long as they pay for postage.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted November 16, 2003 Report Posted November 16, 2003 Update I have just tested utty's cable and found that the pinouts are correct but the build quality of the connector (camera end) is causing a poor to non-existant connection. Using a microscope the contacts do not appear to be accessible so the pins on the camera cannot make a decent contact.

Guest awarner [MVP] Posted November 19, 2003 Report Posted November 19, 2003 Nope not s**** but this drop in build quality is a concern. As I said, I will happily test your cable as long as you include return postage so I can confirm this for you (second opinion etc).
