Anyone interested in coding Elite for SPV?

There's a version out there, "Elite, the new kind", which was successfully ported to Palm and GBA, and code exists in C.

Wonder if spacemonkey or someone else might try there hand... would be wonderful to play elite on the phone, and the interface should be fair compatible with the joystick...

Any thoughts? it's still the game i've spent most time playing in my life, me thinks...

it's not too resource heavy, might work!

in the alternative, there's a spectrum version for the emulator, but not tried it yet.

david braben is very upset at New Kind port and has asked that it's distribution is ceased

so any such port to the SPV would really upset him

and if you make another space trading game that isn't quite perfectly Elite, then the hardcore get upset cos it's not a perfect clone

Source code could still be produced, and whether we compile it or not would be up to us :wink:

Shame aout Braben, doesn't look like they've made any great progress on Elite in years...

the problem isnt really the engine, so much as the name and the data

the name Elite is his copyright, as is the exact data for names, ship configs etc

I agree it's a shame, and I have played New Kind on my GBA, and it looks like a good codebase to work from

but I also dont want to tread on Mr Braben's toes, it gave us all many hours of joy when we were younger - I can only hope that one day he'll let it open to the community

He's very tight about copyrights sine he got dragged across the hot-coals himslef a few years back with the game "Virus".... im not surprised at his attitude. He lost a LOT of money.
