Guest NeilStewart Posted September 5, 2003 Report Posted September 5, 2003  Now this is what happens when people mess with their phones... I did the iMate update. Fine. Then I realised I'd deleted some important stuff, so attempted to downgrade to the Orange ROM so I could access Orange Backup. No signal, or service, at all. So tonight I reflashed with the iMate. Slow, but OK - service came back. So decided to flash the Orange one again. Now, even hard reset doesn't work... Any ideas?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 5, 2003 Report Posted September 5, 2003 Make sure the storage card is in the phone before trying to enter the Bootloader. If you can get to the Canary screen you can hard reset :)
Guest NeilStewart Posted September 5, 2003 Report Posted September 5, 2003 Doesn't give me the option to, though. When I press any key, it just goes to the tri-colours... And the PC won't see the phone either. DEEEP doo doos.
Guest martin Posted September 5, 2003 Report Posted September 5, 2003 Try it without the SD card. Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest NeilStewart Posted September 5, 2003 Report Posted September 5, 2003 Thanks for the tip... but still no joy. PC says there is a problem with the USB device and won't connect to it (no more re-flashing for me then...) - No Service reported on the phone but HERE'S THE ODD THING... GPRS works fine. ??
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 5, 2003 Report Posted September 5, 2003 If you can get to the canary screen try running one of the updates again. As long as it shows USB in the bottom of the screen then you will be able to run the update.
Guest NeilStewart Posted September 5, 2003 Report Posted September 5, 2003 Tried running update (after rebooting PC and phone) and installation has been on the 'checking information' screen for 15 mins.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 5, 2003 Report Posted September 5, 2003 You may need to reboot your PC first then run the update from the canary screen. Also where are you in the world?
Guest NeilStewart Posted September 5, 2003 Report Posted September 5, 2003 Appreciate your help, by the way. I'm in Warrington, UK Just trying the reboot thing...
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 5, 2003 Report Posted September 5, 2003 I'm off in a bit but post what happens. Good luck
Guest NeilStewart Posted September 6, 2003 Report Posted September 6, 2003 After a VERY long night, it's sorted. 400 million reboots of the phone and a similar number of the PC later, I managed to get the phone to accept first the Orange flash. BUT nothing would run - not even iExplorer - not digitally signed etc. So I tried the iMate one again... and all is functional again... phew! Can't access Orange Backup but having a phone again with some missing stuff is better than one which doesn't work at all! Thanks to all for their help... do you guys know if Orange can tell how many times a ROM has been flashed, or does it completely erase everything every time it happens? And does anyone know why the iMate flash is double the size of the Orange one?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 6, 2003 Report Posted September 6, 2003 With running the UK update sounds like everything was ok, the problem you had was that you needed to decert the phone again. As far as I'm aware you can not check how often the rom has been flashed. With the the different sizes the UK update was just an update :) the I-Mate is a complete ROMOS installation also it's got IA Album as well to pad the install out. ;)
Guest NeilStewart Posted September 6, 2003 Report Posted September 6, 2003 Ah - is it therefore possible to get hold of a full Orange flash then? And I thought the decert thing was the cause BUT why did things like Orange Backup and Picture Manager work when I first got the phone from Orange but hadn't decerted it? Very odd. Also - an observation re the iMate flash. Indeed you CAN use ringtones situated on the SD card... :) but not as custom ringtones per contact  - the phone doesn't see the SD card in custom ringtones. They giveth... and they taketh away!
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 6, 2003 Report Posted September 6, 2003 A full Orange flash? As far as I know there are none that have been released officially. One thing to try though (if you want more punishment  ) The problem you had could have down to the fact you needed to Erase IPSM ie Hard Reset.
Guest NeilStewart Posted September 7, 2003 Report Posted September 7, 2003 You see, it was working fine... and I followed your advice about wanting more punishment, and re-flashed from iMate to Orange (again) so I could be 'legal' (in the loose sense) and so when the finally release 1.6, all should be well. No Service All apps (including the Microsoft ones) will not run due to lack of digital signature OJC Guess what I'm doing as I type this... yes, iMate here I come. Again!
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted September 8, 2003 Report Posted September 8, 2003 This is getting to be a common problem now, and i will post about it in the i-Mate thread. The i-Mate update appears to update the GSM layer of the phone, whereas the last Orange does not. As you have noticed the i-Mate Radio version is not compatible with the Orange OS flash, so you cannot get signal. This is one of the reasons we recommend that you should NOT install updates from other countries. The only fix you have to return the phone to an Orange version is to wait for the next update to be released.
Guest NeilStewart Posted September 8, 2003 Report Posted September 8, 2003 Ah - that explains it. Maybe that should be made more of in the iMate section, that if you decide to go backwards, your phone will be like a very expensive silver housebrick! Thanks for the information!
