Winhex --> Backup to PC / Computer

I have spent several hours reading many posts that mention winhex, but I still can't figure out my problem and was hoping someone could help.

This is what I am trying to do:

- Free up my SD by copying my backup files to the PC so I have them in case I need to revert back to them after I attempt to update my phones ROM. (I created the backup files on my SD by going into my .93 bootloader and hitting save all).

This is my problem:

- I have my SD reader (which is a SanDisk Cruzer using removable SD's) and attempting to use Winhex. From reading the posts it seems like I have to use 'clone disk' to make a backup to the PC, but when I do this I get an error ' An error occurred while accessing "Drive H:". '

Any ideas?

I tried to access my SD card through Windows Explorer and it just asks if I want to format and I hit no.

Is it possible that I just can't use this type of SD reader or am I doing something wrong??

Thanks for any help!

Hopefully this is correct as I have not had much chance to use WINHEX

Place the disc in the card reader open Winhex and go to ToolsDisc Editor

Choose the location of the SD card in Physical Disks NOT Logical Drives

Click OK and the contents will be displayed.

Now choose FileCreate Backup now you can choose the location of the backup click OK and then you are done :)

Or just run WinHex, cancel the menu that pops up then click the "Clone disk" button :)

But yeah, as awarner says, you need to select physical, not logical (caught me out too :/).

Awesome!!! Thanks alot everyone!! I can't believe I wasn't trying the physical drives after a few hours of trying

Oh well, it looks like it worked now though :) ;)

One more question...

Now I have a whx file of my entire phone that was created in my bootloadere using save all (117 megs!). Is there an easy way to split my backup somehow so I can have a whx file that has everything EXCEPT my IPSM (want to create a backup without all my contact info, ect.).

The thing is... The backup I have is a backup of my old ROM before I upgraded and I would prefer not to have to reload that on my phone then go into the bootloader to save everything except IPSM (or erase IPSM then hit save all if that's not possible).

Nope sorry. You'd have to save each section separately and then reload them all seaprately.

I was hoping there could be someway, but it makes sense... Thanks Mono.

I've tried using a 64MB MMC card to back up just my bootloader (1.00), then pasting the "number of sectors to copy" from usbterm (20000) which gives me a file of 9.76MB. If I try to copy the whole disk, it creates a 61MB file then gives a cyclic redundancy check (as if it's trying to read further than the card's capacity).

Obviously I'm not sure whether to trust this file or not... anyone any ideas?

you can trim the file.. but i would STRONGLY advise against trimming a file loaded with a bootloader ...

if you get an error on downloading it, your phone is 'paperweighted' with no simple way to fix (florin_m warned us about 9 months ago..) and now i know that just because the card THINKS it contains a bootloader, it performs NO CHECKS to verify the integrity, until it is fully downloaded.. and it's a bit late then.

I have sucessfully trimmed, (using winhex's split ability) a 128meg file into a 22 meg rom backup... and tested it .. i would not suggest simply part copying the file (as the checks will be wrong!)

Thanks Will,

Do you have any further information on "paperweighted" phones?

I'm not sure if it's just my SD reader right now (PQI TravelFlash), because using winhex to view the disk in the reader (tried with 64MB PQI MMC, 8MB Orange SD and 256MB Sandisk SD) it doesn't seem to report the right capacity, and when I scroll to the end of the disk, I get CRC error saying it can't read those sectors.

Even windows can't get the capacity of the MMC card right and has problems formatting it initially.

Not sure if Winhex can see the disk parameters correctly.

I've tried using the 'make backup' and 'clone' options - 'make backup' seems to be the more reliable option. I managed to get the bootloader from the phone onto my 8MB SD using USBTerm, make a backup in winhex, then restore that backup to the 64MB MMC. It all *looks* ok, but I'm not prepared to try and flash my phone with either!

Any help, or a tested and working .whx of the 0.93 loader would be greatly appreciated from anyone!

Ok paperweighted phones need a jtag or other 'serious' kit to reflash the chip.

I have applied the whx files for bootloaders onto a 4mb and 8mb card. (the original source was an 8mb.. all work fine..

my 128mb card reports as 122mb in winhex..

I can mail you a .93/.98 whx file.. if needed, but they are available for download, -- somewhere!!

Just remember any errors will not be checked for on the phone.. this is the bit i cannot stress enough.. i thought because it reported there was a bootloader, it had checked it and was all ok... live and learn!

Bloody hell - that is serious

Out of interest - which flash reader do you use? As mine is a cheapie I am a bit suspicious of the way it's working, and it COULD be the cause of my problem... unless you know a way to tell if a phone definitely is 'paperweighted'. My 64MB MMC card reported as 3.99GB a couple of times! The SD cards seem to be ok as far as that goes though, so I'll be sticking to using them.

Just to be clear, as I've not tried to flash the phone yet - if I were to get 0.93 off you (been looking for weeks before I even got the phone!) and blow that onto, say, my 8MB SD card and try to 'restore' to the phone: if the phone is 'paperweighted' will it flash at all?

My understanding being that if it is unflashable as you say, I've got nothing to lose by trying 0.93, because it won't actually do anything if it can't flash the phone, and if it does work... I get what I want!

Or is that complete rubbish and I've got the wrong end of a different stick?

Thanks again for all the info - very useful stuff.

basically if the phone can get to the bootloader it's fixable.. (or it always has been so far) when it does not respond to anything, power buttons, charger insert etc.. it's paperweighted!!

Riiiight... now I get you!

I had in mind some weird tanagers that shipped un-flashable!

So it's looking like I'm having card / reader problems then.

Anyone suggest a decent reader to get?

And sorry to keep asking but if I could get that 0.93 .whx I'll love you forever  .

I'll carry on looking, but along with the mitac jvm, it's proving difficult to find!

Unrar and apply the image to an SD card and you're sorted.

Superb ;)

My E100 is now de-certed and SIM unlocked with 0.93 bootloader and 1.5 orange uk rom, and doing a full backup from the bootloader as I type.

All I need now is the Mitac JVM and my phone will be perfect.

HUGE thanks to Will for all the info and Mono for the file.
