Guest JampoTT Posted September 7, 2003 Report Posted September 7, 2003 Just got a new SPV (original one) as a replacement on Orange. I'm based in the UK, and just wondering which (if any) of the updates I should install on it to get some more features / bug fixes....
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted September 7, 2003 Report Posted September 7, 2003 If your operator version (Programs > Settings > About) is less than 1.3.5 then you'll need to download the latest update from www.orange.com.
Guest JampoTT Posted September 7, 2003 Report Posted September 7, 2003 Its 1.3.5.6 But I noticed lots of other "Roms" are available. Worth installing or should I wait for another official Orange SPV one?
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted September 7, 2003 Report Posted September 7, 2003 Officially you should not install other operators updates, each one is fine tuned speciifcally for their networks. However the i-Mate, Qtek and Eurotel's are all version 1.5 and above. Try them if you're feeling brave, personally i've never bothered on my "main" handset.
Guest gadget1 Posted September 7, 2003 Report Posted September 7, 2003 I think you mean "shouldn't" I asked the same question last week, it was entitled "Confused about ROM", check back and you'll see the reply :)
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted September 8, 2003 Report Posted September 8, 2003 Sorry for typo, corrected now :)
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 9, 2003 Report Posted September 9, 2003 But before you are tempted with the I-Mate have a look here. http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewtopic.php...=asc&highlight=
Guest vijay555 Posted September 9, 2003 Report Posted September 9, 2003 Good point awarner, didn't realise that imate changed the radio stack. JampoTT, if you're going to use any rom other than orange, and even then, i recommend a FULL backup. save it on your pc afterwards, and you won't risk buggering your phone and you can still use your SD card. I don't think you can really fry an SPV doing jingo roms, because i've rescued mine from beyond death more than once, but it's a pain. so MAKE A BACKUP. For an original SPV, just use the orange 1.5 rom (if you can get it). there's nothing particulary wrong with it - my e100 had crap battery life, that's why i updated. For an SPV UK 1.5 should be fine. I don't think there's >that< much improved in any foreign rom to really turn you away from UK1.5, unless you've got a dodgy e100 battery. But my imate-en-stein is lovely, and not had any problems with it. Much improved infact. V
Guest morpheus2702 Posted September 9, 2003 Report Posted September 9, 2003 Come on... three times the battery life and a working SMS counter with the iMate update - of course it's worth it. My E100 has never run smoother!
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 11, 2003 Report Posted September 11, 2003 Only if you want to take the risk involved, that's all. Play safe but if you get problems that's what we're here for.
Guest sgannon Posted September 20, 2003 Report Posted September 20, 2003 From reading through various threads I built up the courage to install the i-mate update on my Orange 1.3.5 SPV. Didn't realise it played with the radio stack, but the update didn't seem to work too well (everything in settings appeared in numerical format, eg Silent profile: Silent, 1,0,100010 etc and it wouldn't save any changes). I restored the IPSM (and got a signal on Orange  ) and loaded the Qtek update instead and everything is now working - apart from Wap over dial-up that is. I've not read it anywhere but can I assume that the Qtek ROM also updates the radio stack? Otherwise I suppose my phone wouldn't be working now? :? In any case, I learnt enough to make a full backup before playing with anything.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 21, 2003 Report Posted September 21, 2003 I'm not sure if the Qtek does alter the radio stack but I would guess it does as it's designed to be set for another country.
Guest morpheus2702 Posted September 21, 2003 Report Posted September 21, 2003 By that rationale, do any of the mainland European Orange updates alter the radio stack?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 21, 2003 Report Posted September 21, 2003 Only if it's a full update, ie the UK from mono's site was less than 6MB this is only an add-on as such and will not change the stack. If you have an update of around 11MB then chances are the stack will be changed for that network.
