e100 on contract, £150 deposit!

Just a quick question for you all and any help, advice would be apreciated.

A friend has just been speaking to Orange about getting an e100 on contract. They have told him, because he is a student he will have to pay a £150 deposit each year for the phone, even though he has been accepted for the contract!

Is this a normal scenario as when I got my SPV last year they had no quibbles at all and never even mentioned a deposit.

Cheers

Tim

I had to pay a £150 deposit back at Xmas when i took out my contract. I was under the impression i'd get it back after 12 months though (it being a deposit).

Really? I bought from an online store, and filled out the contract in my own name. Any way, I didn't have to pay a deposit. But I think that's cause I paid online.

Way back in '98 when i got my first mobile (nokia 6110) with cellnet i had to pay a deposit of £150 plus another ton for the phone just because i had zero credit, i got the money back after 6 months and when i did my first move to orange they where fine, but that might have been due to spending £90 a month on calls and ordering one of them new fangled 7110's, ooh they where cool

its just orange protecting there investment for there phone, which must cost them about £250 .

Back when i was a kid, we had to get up 3 days before we went to bed to get up in time to pay the mill owner to go to work....

Off topic...

one of them new fangled 7110's, ooh they were cool

I had 3 of them - the slider went every time.

But if only it had worked... the first time I walked in the pub with that I just felt like I was in the Matrix (though I'm sure everyone else thought 'wanker').

Oh, the memories *sniff*

It's not unlikely that he will have to pay a deposit. But, it's a one off (returnable) payment and not each year.

If they even joke about crediting my account with the £150 i'll assrape them. I need the cash! hehe

I brought my SPV from The Carphone Warehouse online with no deposit.

When I got my first orange contract phone (and I was a student) they made me pay the £150 deposit, but they did say you can avoid it by paying direct debit on your bills. So if you don't fancy (or don't have the cash) paying the extra, then offer to pay your bills by direct debit.

I pay by direct debit and had never heard of such a deposit in the past?!

Standard requirement to pay a deposit if you have a bad credit rating. Bear in mind all companies have their own internal rating system, so they look you up, judge you according to their internal scoring system and then take into account what you have requested on your account, e.g. Direct Debit etc.

I had to pay a deposit when I was a student due to my exceptionally bad credit rating, thankfully it is now top notch and I canget credit cards again (thought I'd inject a little hope for those of you that think it will never get better).

yep getting a contract phone does improve your credit score - owen Posted from my SmartPhone! in the pub

Another tip to improve your credit rating, if you can pay your bill before the bill due date (so you've paid it before your bill arrives basically), I don't do Direct Debit, I just e-wire the money to Orange on the first of each month, it all adds up when your credit rating is concerned.

Talking of 7110s and deposits...

When I ordered my 7110 as a student back in December 1999 I was shocked to be presented with a request for a £250 deposit - when I was trying to register the phone!

Can you imagine that, a shiny new toy arriving by courier and before getting a chance to play with it, facing the prospect of sending it back?

The guy I spoke to at Orange Registrations was an absolute moron and said there was nothing he could do about this charge. Eventually, having thought laterally about it, I did two things.

I called back and asked them to register it at my parent's address, rather than at my student house address. This dropped the deposit down to £150.

I then asked them to remove International Roaming from the account. Et voila, deposit requirement gone! :) Six months later, having established my creditworthiness, they added Roaming without charge.

Oh and on the subject of the 7110 slider, it only broke if you opened it by hand and then pressed the silver release catch. It was easy to do this by mistake though. I got through three of them myself mind, but mine were replaced because of the dreadfully unstable software rather than the slider fault. I still have one sitting in a cupboard as a spare phone...
