the new Sony memory sticks wont work in their older devices, (1gb cards and up)..they had to upgrade hardware (could have been done on purpose to scam some more $$$ as sony likes to do).

as it also says:

This card will offer much higher transfer rate than older 1GB, 512MB (and smaller) cards but this transfer rate will be usable only with memory card readers that are equipped with USB 2.0 (USB 1.1 will not be enough).

So wouldnt this mean the hardware in the portable device should be faster?

in that case. idont know i didnt read it, to lazy. urm sorry mate better ask one of the experts on this. 2gb would be bloody expensive any way

mark.

Its not that you can't use these cards with USB 1.x devices - its just that the improved data transfer speed from card to reader would be bottle-necked by USB 1.1 devices, so there would be no difference in the read/write speed.

USB 1.1 peripheral data transfer = 12Mbps max.

USB 2.0 peripheral data transfer = 480Mbps max.

So say if the access speed of these new SD cards is more than 12Mbps, USB 1.1 will limit the speed.

ohhhh ok, gotcha.

Do devices struggle and have to work more with larger memory cards?

and does anyone think newer mobile devices will take advantage of USB 2.0?

Not really, except that you have to wait longer for data to transfer. Even though USB 1.1's theoretical maximum is 12Mbps, a typical card reader will read at around 3 Mbps. If you have a 2Gb card full of stuff, how long are you going to be waiting? About 11 minutes?

Basically as devices, applications, files all use more memory, data rates have to increase just to maintain the same transfer times.

I think that the SPV/E-100/SPV2 all use a serial-type connection at the bottom of the phone, so transfer speeds are limited already - and USB 2.0 wouldn't make a hell of a difference. But if it used, say a mini USB socket, we'd be talking...

Holy Cow - expect to pay £750 at least for one of those !!!

What, when the Clie SL10 has one and retails for £90?

Got mine from Costco back in January... probably discontinued now. You can get the colour version (SJ22) for £130 now from the PCWorld website - and that has a mini USB socket.

I think spacecowboy6982 is referring to the price of a 2GB SD Card. I'm unsure of them being as much as £750 but as a 1GB one is over £250 I'd reckon at least £500+.

Even if a new SPV was to have a mini usb socket for fast transfers both the socket and the USB ports on the PC would have to be USB 2.

LMFAO the penny drops! Oh hell, my apologies Cowboy, the 'one' I was referring to was a USB mini port, NOT the 2Gb card. Clie's only use Memory Stick!
