Guest mattscholey Posted September 13, 2003 Report Posted September 13, 2003 Hi, I've just ordered my O2 Online PAYG Talkalot SIM card, which gives me 300 free WAP minutes every month, but no free voice minutes (something I'll miss after a month with a contract). The WAP minutes include connecting to the internet. Is there any way I can use the free WAP minutes to make voice calls, probably by some sort of service on the net which allows you to make phone calls? I think it's a long shot, but if there is such a service it would be great. I'm sure it's technically possible with a Smartphone, so if anyone has the money/resources you could make quite a lot of money setting up such a service, as I'm sure theres a huge market for people with a smartphone wanting 300 free minutes a month on Pay as you go. EDIT: After a bit of research I've discovered that there are a few services available allowing you to make voice calls over the internet. I read this article at http://www.voanews.com/article.cfm?objectI...808ECB89500E0E0 which said the technical name for it was Voice over IP. I couldn't find any such services, but I'll keep looking. Any idea if these will work on a Smartphone? Matt
Guest Lordsmiff Posted September 14, 2003 Report Posted September 14, 2003 VoIP is more of a technology rather than a service - if you've ever used MSN Messenger to talk to someone, then you've used an example of it (though MSN probably doesn't use the more common protocols associated with it :) ) To use it, both you and the other person would need a client - I've heard of it being used to call a landline but that would need a third party company and you'd end up paying for it that way. So to use your smartphone, you'd have to find someone who's written a client for it so I would suggest googling for internet phone or something similar - I think it's a longshot that someone would write a client for a phone but you never know ;) T.
Guest mattscholey Posted September 14, 2003 Report Posted September 14, 2003 I assume it would be cheaper to call a landline using a third party VoIP service than using O2's rates (40p a minute to non-O2 mobiles). I'll so a google search to try and find someone who might do it for the smartphone. Matt
Guest beersoft Posted September 14, 2003 Report Posted September 14, 2003 You can do it, it will cost a fortune and gprs isn't fast enough for fulll duplex voip you would need something like this http://research.microsoft.com/~jiangli/portrait/ which does voip and http://www.swyx.com to talk to a real phone and loads of other stuff as well if you can do it, sell it, its worth a fortune later owen having flashbacks to the IPconvergance confrence i went to last week
