Guest strangechild Posted September 14, 2003 Report Posted September 14, 2003 For the past two hours I have been searching high and low in the forums in an attempt to make a full backup of my phone. I'm following Richie M's advice from here to the letter but still no joy. Everything seems to be going fine until the last part of the process. In the DOS window, I type "usbterm", press enter, type "qfs ?", press enter, and the process hangs here. It looks like this: C:>usbterm qfs ? _ I've found other people in the forum who have described similar problems, but the problems have simply gone away of their own accord. Has anyone else experienced, and resolved, this problem?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 14, 2003 Report Posted September 14, 2003 you do not need to type usbterm only qfs ? remember you have to be on the canary screen to use USBTerm.
Guest strangechild Posted September 14, 2003 Report Posted September 14, 2003 you do not need to type usbterm only qfs ?Well, you need to type "usbterm" first, to start running USBterm. You can't just drop to DOS then type "qfs ?". Maybe I didn't explain what I was doing properly in my original post  remember you have to be on the canary screen to use USBTerm. As I said, I am following Richie M's step-by-step guide [link] to the letter. The phone is on the 3-colour Canary screen before running USBterm - it still won't work. As I can't get USBterm to work, I've been trying to downgrade my bootloader, but that won't work either!! I downloaded a .whx hex dump of the 0.93 bootloader and then copied to an SD card using WinHex. I rebooted into strap mode with the card in. I got "Card found" but no prompt to install the 0.93 bootloader from the card. On pressing the action button it simply enters the currently installed 1.0 bootloader, which has Erase IPSM as its only option! So frustrating...

Guest Will Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 Time to clear stuff up. Kill processes, put phone onto cradle when you start usbterm, (drop to command prompt, navigate to the usbterm directory, or drag the icon from windows into the command prompt box) Type usbterm. Wait for approx 20 secs, then press return key. You should see cmd0> now you can type your qfs ? to get the help list. If the card with the bootloader on it, does not list the 'bootloader' and prompt for 'press action key to download. something is wrong with your copy process. Be aware that if the bootloader is damaged on the sd card, you get a wonderful message 'download bootloader FAIL' treasure that message, it's the last thing your phone will display until you either find someone who can reflash the rom, or send of to hayes. Speaking from experience of playing with sd card flashes over the weekend, which killed my e100! Live and learn.... Will Will

All I do is kill wcescomm.exe and start up the USBTerm app from mono's site then only type as I said qfs ? and that's it. Works for me
Guest strangechild Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 err no USBTerm is a seperate app that uses a DOS window. wink back :) just start up USBTerm then type qfs ? I think there is a simple misunderstanding here. I was talking about launching USBTerm from the command prompt - i.e. open DOS window, navigate to the directory where USBTerm is saved, type "usbterm" to launch the program, and then "qfs ?". As I have now realised, you're talking about launching USBTerm from Windows, meaning that the first thing you would type is "qfs ?". So we're both right! @Will Thanks for your extra instructions. I haven't read about the 20 second wait anywhere else, so hopefully it'll do the trick. Interesting though that awarner doesn't need to do that. As others have said, USBTerm seems quite buggy. So what killed your E100 in the end? (Just trying to avoid doing the same!)
Guest Will Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 the wait is just because it takes a while for usbterm to establish the correct connection, this application is fantastic, but is not 'perfect'. I think my problem was a corrupt image, or damaged sd card.. so you should be fine.. (going to keep images zipped to prevent this happening again) Will
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 Just thought what OS are you using as I am running XP home but when I tried with ME I did have problems.
Guest strangechild Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 Just thought what OS are you using as I am running XP home but when I tried with ME I did have problems. Bugger. I'm using Windows (la)ME... :) Did you ever get usbterm to work on ME?
Guest Will Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 nope it's 2000, xp only sorry! As they have the better/required usb socket supports. Will
Guest strangechild Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 nope it's 2000, xp only sorry! As they have the better/required usb socket supports. Will Feck. And there's no way to upgrade the USB functionality of ME then... or any chance of a 9x/ME-friendly USBTerm being written?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 Unlikely as it's getting obsolete very quickly :) enen though I still like it and use it.
Guest strangechild Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 Unlikely as it's getting obsolete very quickly :) enen though I still like it and use it. Getting obsolete... so what's replacing it? (and will it work with WinME...?)
Guest Will Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 no not ME, never consider ME an upgrade!! go 2k or XP... Will
Guest strangechild Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 no not ME, never consider ME an upgrade!! go 2k or XP... Will I know ME sucks, it came on the box that my parents bought for me. And cos it's such a cheap cack PC, it doesn't get on with Win98SE, so despite an attempt to down/up-grade to that, I had to go back to stinkin' ME. I would go XP/2000, but I can't face the thought of handing over so much cash to Billg. I know that both Windows 2000 and XP are available for significantly less  than full retail, but when you're connecting to Windoze Update every five minutes to fix the latest security headache (and installing service packs every ten minutes), you've got to wonder, in the wake of the RIAA's recent actions, how long it will be before M$ start sending the Feds after everyone with hooky copies.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 www.ebuyer.co.uk have XP home (oem) for around £67+vat
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 Getting obsolete... so what's replacing it? (and will it work with WinME...?) I was refering to ME being obsolete.
Guest strangechild Posted September 16, 2003 Report Posted September 16, 2003 Will, awarner... thanks for all your help with this. I've finally got my hands on Win2000 box and it's working! These are the "qfs" commands I've issued, and the order in which I issued them - I presume this will have given me a successful backup? 10: Format CARD 0: Bootloader --> CARD 2: WinCE --> CARD 4: GSM --> CARD 8: IPSM --> CARD I have avoided 6: CE+GSM --> CARD, as I read not to do this somewhere. Does that all look good to you? Again, thanks for all the help, and awarner, I'll check out ebuyer
