SD Card with reader

hi,

firstly let me appologise cause this will wander of topic of a smartphone but some of it is related :wink:

ok - i've bout a USB Card reader cause i use alot of mp3's etc and got fed up of waiting ages for them to transfer via the phone. I got it working ok on another computer but it wants me to format it before i can do anything. I dont want to do this cause of all the software installed to the card - so anyone know what i should do/anyway round the problem?

Also if i format it do you think my SPV will want to format it again when i insert it? i guessing theres some kind of file allocation problem/incompatability or something techy i dont understand :wink: i really dont wanna reset the phone again if possible.

also (and this is OT) i know some of you guys know what you talking about so hoping you can help - i've tried to get the reader working on my main machine but it wont take it. on first boot it worked ok, it found it and let me read a card. however after every other boot up the Card Reader is either found but the computer crashes when i try to read anything on a card, or the reader is evident in the system properties but with errors so doesnt work. any suggestions how i could get it working? its an windows ME machine and i've never had USB problem before.

had a look through the (rather limited) documentation and see no mention of PQI, but if i'm honest i dont know what PQI mean! :-s

further update re card reader not working. if i have the reader plugged into the computer before i turn it on it brings up a protection error and says i have to restart. At which point i have to use the master power switch to turn the comp off and then on again to restart.

if i start without the reader plugged in the computer loads fine. but if i try to plug the reader in once windows loaded i get a system error and i'm told to press escape. if i go and check system properties now the reader is shown as a device and working properly but it doesnt register in my computer so i can use it. also on restart it crashes the computer again so have to unplug it to get into windows.

hope someone knows why this happening cause i aint know enough to get it working. usually playing with drivers get things working and a quick read of microsoft online troubleshooters and help files usually helps but no look so far. again sorry for OT.

i had trouble with one on a Win 98 PC.

what windows are you running?

Also is the SD card a Kingmax?

It's been known for some card readers (PQI) to not work properly with them.

Its a jenreader by jenoptic. the SD cards i've tried to use are the original orange one and a scandisk one. system is window ME and i think that is the probably something to do with it not liking USB so much. played around a lot lost night, tried lots of drivers - new and old, even removed all USB based hardware from system and reinstalled all drivers, but still i either have a crash when i plug the card in or the computer wont load.

will be having another play tonight. main concern atmo has been trying to get the computer to accept the card - i'm hoping the format problem will just vanish ;)

A hell of a lot faster ;)

The card reader is a USB connection but the phone (even though it plugs in a USB port) is a Serial connection.

@eyup It may not be ME, I had a card reader working fine with ME.

I've a formatting problem with my card reader. I can use the card fine, but when I use a card reader it seems to be the wrong format. Text on the files on the card is replaced by weird symbols??? I can't format the card using the reader, as it gets to about 98% and says error while formatting.

I'm using 256mb Scandisk and running XP Pro. Hope someone can shed some light on this as it is pissing me off I can't use my reader and have to use slooooowwwww phone.

Try formting the card using Task Manager on the phone.

Have you tried reinstalling windows on top, i.e. reinstall windows but not overwrite all the data on your computer,

that usually works with hardware errors
