Hey all!

Congratulations on the success of the Pinoy area at MoDaCo :-)

Next weekend, I would like to make some changes to make the Pinoy area better to use for you you guys.

I am already planning to promote some new moderators, here's your chance to suggest other changes... post below!

;)

My suggestions:

1. Two or three new moderators would suffice. I think we should nominate and create a poll for this. This would give each one of us the chance to have the most-liked moderators running this section for us. I'm nominating dinoalbert, grifter and pzee for their ever presence and the good insights they've posted. ;)

2. If possible, create sub categories within General Pinoy like the one's posted in the main forum index (customization, help and advices etc.)

3. An individual file area for homeskin, ringtones, etc. for easy reference. There should be no posts allowed in that section only uploads. It's so difficult to find the stuffs we're looking for if we're to scan through each thread :?:

4. Ordinary members be given option to delete duplicate posts. This is very rampant and quite embarrasing

How do we avoid having stuff in Pinoy area, that would actually be more appropriate in the main area of the site? This seems to be quite common...

Would it be possible to "mirror" such stuffs in here to wherever area it would be appropriate? I mean if I post a topic here that would be of interest in the Help and Advice section for example, can it be in such a way that replies in General Pinoy can also be seen in Help and Advice? Pinoy Moderators would be in charge of "mirroring" those posts in the other sections. I'm guilty of bookmarking General Pinoy and not visiting the main forum index (I think most of us does that). So if we post in the main sections, we would surely miss out each others (pinoy) response.

I may ask moderators to 'move' topics to the main board if appropriate, but ensure they leave 'shadow' topics behind (i.e. saying 'Moved: blah blah), that would help, but would be a lot of work for the mods, and would mean a forum full of shadow topics ;-)

Sometimes we also use our own language so we might be obliged to speak English only if those topics goes to the main sections of the forum. I do suggest the creation of a "intellectual repository" in the file area section as I've earlier suggested. Some of us are writing users guides anyway like the one posted by one of our forum member, pzee. This will be excerpts of what was "discovered" and debated upon by our community (not excluding the other members of course). Sort of a work in progress thingie (pinoy thread) and a finished product (intellectual repository). ;)

It could be something like this...

The only problem so far I'm getting is that there is still no merge topics option. Splitting a topic up is not a problem, but what about putting them together?

If the topic can be mirrored into another thread, either mid thread or end...or even as a start of a thread in a main area it would be easier on moderators... but this depends on the features of this forum.

I'm still hoping for a merge feature so I can clean up the Geeral - Pinoy area.

Merge would be cool but I don't know if it's possible :?

have needed that a few times in the past.

I think 3 moderators wouldn't be enough, may i suggest to make it 4, and include the name of spv_dman. ;)

Im sorry I have to refuse to be asigned as a mod as suggested (thanks anyway, richard!) ;)

Im afraid I might not perform a mod's job very well in the next 3 months because I wil be travelling from time to time (local and abroad).

I hope you understand.

But I would agree on adi's idea....spv_dman will be a good moderator as he has helped a lot of Pinoys re their smartphones :D

cheers!

i also nominate spv_dman to be a moderator... as what dino said, he helped a lot of us here... he is also online most of the time...

I think creating "shadow topics" is the answer.

It would mean more work for mods but it would be better in the long run.

or maybe we can delete the shadow topic in the pinoy thread after a number of weeks that it has become idle.

Cool!!!!!!!! This is way Cool!!!!!!!!!!

Vote me!!! hey, without my additional demands, paul would not likely give us the chance, Right Paul?? ;) (Pls say yes even if you will vote me out)

I know this soud silly and its silly alright but hey, Ill delete all trash topics that everyone hates! see, topics pile up.. I get to go online a lot.. I know ya all hate me... THATS VICE VERSA!!!(Joke!!! hehehehe) SEEE, This should be fun... :D

of course Paul will give us the chance thats why he himself initiated this thread :D

remember we are not in the position to make 'demands", it sounds too aggresive as ppcsurfr said in the other thread. Besides, this forum is made for us for free, thanks to Paul. We just simply ask/ request

pero malay mo dewslat pwede kang gawing mod okay din yun masaya ;)

having additional moderators would somewhat "clean" our pinoy area of repetitive discussions/threads....and more so to police some "misbehaving" members and uphold the real value of respect.

go ahead paul...we need them...

Hope this helps:

I think tagging and filtering will do. The locale forum should almost look the same as the main forum format (same sections, folders etc). Whenever the member has a new thread or attached file locally a Tag [Locale Pinoy] will be set to True by default. In that way when a member is inside the locale forum - only the locale specific files/posts are filtered but when he/she is on the main forum a member cannot see the locale post. The moderators have the right to set the Tag to False thus making the thread/files Public- everybody can see and interact with it (mirror effect). Moderators don’t need to move the stuffs coz it is already with the same folder as the main. Hope this improves organization and ease administering...

Anyone good with php?

I think you'll have to create a plugin for phpBB to make that work.

But that sounds good.

I will take this further later this week, as I am very busy atm.

One thing I would like to do is where the site detects you are in teh Phillippines, and makes the Pinoy area appear at the top of the forum list :-)

P

Even Better!! but how would you do that? there are no certain way to detect it automatically.. Just add some sort of script in the registration on which country... And also add an drop-down option in the profiles so that it would be easy for us to choose and also for your record keeping...

Damn, Thanks Paul, you're really charitable... any catch? I know that there's a Plus membership, what would there there reactions to this? I know that you have to set priorities to them... would this change the whole idea of the Forum(just a thought)?

Darn Philipinos, we love to invade.... we're like parasites... im a parasite ;) :D

There are APIs available for perl, php, etc, used to locate specific individuals using their IP address.

Paul:

My suggestion for site improvement: Posts should be filtered using a database of profane and offensive words both in English and Tagalog (Pinoy mods can help u w/ this). Users will be tagged and warned for using such words.

i have no problem with using profanities as long as they are not directed to individuals. like when you get frustrated at smart and you need to release some of that anger. it's when certain individuals use profanities or even non-profane words in berating other people or being tactless that annoys me. it's the context that matters.

hmmm...again, speak for yourself. Filipinos are not parasites...ONLY Dewslat is a parasite indeed. hehehe. We are just joining this wonderful forum, not necessarily invading it. There is no competition here ;)

cheers

one way to help the pinoy area is to be responsible in posting up replies and topics, being considerate and sensitive to fellow members, and basically knowing the forum rules.

paul, we do need more pinoy moderators to look after our pinoy forum, it might escape your attention sometimes, but an additional moderators would ease your charitable job of attending to every forums...thanks a lot paul...more power to you.

I don't think IP address filtering to get the posters' location is accurate since some of us are running on VPN.

What we can do is to rely on the 'Country' field of our profiles.
