Hello,

i am new on this forum and dont really know where to post.

i was just wondering, is it actually worth my while getting the orange SPV E100 for £20.00 on the orange 200 tariff (£30/mth) right now. it comes with all the bells and whistles, including camera and loadsa other stuff.

the only issue i have is with the actual hardware - does it give any major problems, or should i just wait for the SPV2?

i need a new phone quite soon, as my spending has rocketed somewhat (i am a student, so it may still be low compared to many people's understanding of 'high') and using this old pay-as-u-go really is getting to me.

i just need to know, is the phone sturdy, will it survive a few knocks, should i just wait for the spv2? i dont want out-dated hardware if i am going to commit to a 12month contract, so thats why it needs to be everything, if you get my drift!

any help would be dearly appreciated!

thanx.

Welcome to the site ;)

If you are worried about being outdated then you need to decide how long you are willing to wait, and how much you are prepaired to pay for the next generation of smartphone to be released.

As with most phones there can be bugs etc but the good out weigh the bad.

yeah, i understand that bugs are part of the parcel with new technologies.

i am a little worried about mp3's - i know thats not what its designed for, but if it can mean i only carry the phone and not a minidisc with me at the same time, then it can only be good. most of my mp3's are encoded at 192kbps at the mandatory 44khz. i hear that the on-board media player just isnt up to decoding these.

also, is there a maximum amount of memory (via SD) that the phone can access? i am thinking of gettting some 256mb's or one 512mb stick, but wish to use it all with mp3's and the like.

its just i am a student and have seen this quite good deal on at one of the online phone stores, and am interested.

initially i was going to buy the 7250i, but when i went phone-hunting i bumped into the spv-e100 at the orange shop, a real working version, and the screen just is brilliant, indoors anyway. thats what has currently swung it the way of the spv - else id have had my nokia ages ago!

i just dont know much about this smartphone 2002/2003 business, and with it being microsoft, upGRADES, and stuff is going to require better hardware, so i need something that'll last me at least 12months.

also, i know the smartphone features are nice, but again have a few questions. they are not the main reason i am interested in this phone, but if it claims to do something, does it do it properly?

basically, can i read/view e-books (PDFs and the like) on the spv-e100 or will i have to pay a lot of money to get an app?

also, does this phone do the things a mobile phone does flawlessley? obviously nokia have had years to perfect this, but is it all good with the e-100 with regards to normal stuff?

They shouldn't be. Some people say its unreasonable to expect a flawless package, but I disagree. As it happens my e100 has been near perfect - certainly close enough for me to accept the few shortcomings.

Cant answer that for you. Try a Search because lots of people have tried different encoding techniques for different formats.

I have 2 x 256Mb, but I'm told (not tried it myself) that the phone can take bigger. 512Mb in the UK is expensive - it's much cheaper to get 2 x 256, but you can end up swapping cards back and forth

£20 for the phone is a good deal! I got mine a few weeks ago for £35. If I was you I would hang on one month. The C200 *might* be out around that time. No guarantees though

Er, that depends. It's a bit like switching from Motorola to Nokia - the menus are different and it throws you for a bit. There are a few niggles (like having to put a number in the CC field of an SMS to get it to tell you how many characters you've used). In general it does everything a "normal" mobile does, and more besides, but the biggest niggle for me is that it does it all a little bit too slowly.

You have to get an app, but I dont know if they're free or you have to pay.

mobi pocket is free for a trial period after that you can read ebooks in pdf format without having to pay for it. if you wish to use the other services you will have pay

thanx for all the help people, im gonna check that mp3 search now.

i went into the local orange shop and the man gave me a little look at the real phone - when he switched it on, though, it did take a while before it was functional and it was accepting the inputs. that is quite a major issue for me.

however, i think after ive checked the mp3 thingy ill decide on either waiting or buying!

thanx again for all the advice!

ps. this mobile pdf viewer, i can view pdfs in it for ever, just cant do the other things?

thanx.
