Guest Muzz Posted September 25, 2003 Report Posted September 25, 2003 Which do you think is the "better buy" for speed and power? (Plus Overclocking is also an option.) 1. http://secure.addonsonline.co.uk/addon/cod...596&subcatid=47 2. http://secure.addonsonline.co.uk/addon/cod...561&subcatid=44 Your advice would be apprecieted
Guest Muzz Posted September 25, 2003 Report Posted September 25, 2003 Or even the old debate of Intel vs AMD? P4 2.8 or AMD 3000 which is better as ive heard so many mixed reviews?
Guest Muzz Posted September 25, 2003 Report Posted September 25, 2003 Has the Athlon Xp slipped since the introduction of the P4 ?
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted September 25, 2003 Report Posted September 25, 2003 Sorry, was a quick reply done in a hurry, here's something slightly more insightful... ;) The P4 has started wiping the floor with Ath's since Intel hit 2.4Ghz. For the prices in those two packages you'd be stupid to not go for the P4, which will easily break 3Ghz. Add in Hyperthreading and the athlon deal suddenly starts looking less attractive.
Guest Muzz Posted September 25, 2003 Report Posted September 25, 2003 Sorry for being a bit daft, I have heard of it but what excactly does hyperthreading do?
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted September 25, 2003 Report Posted September 25, 2003 Effectively emulates dual a dua processor board. So it can process two application threads at once. Which makes it nealy 2x as efficient as an Athlon. It's certainly not a dual processor, but is a lot better than non-HT cpu's
Guest Muzz Posted September 25, 2003 Report Posted September 25, 2003 Thanks allot mate, I think ill go for the P4. ;)
Guest Maverick Posted September 25, 2003 Report Posted September 25, 2003 What is the fastest P4 CPU available in the market?
Guest Muzz Posted September 25, 2003 Report Posted September 25, 2003 I think the fastest commercially available Pentium is a P4 3.06ghz. I saw a website that said someone had overclocked one to 4.0ghz!!!!!!! Now that is fast! ;)
Guest siu99spj Posted September 29, 2003 Report Posted September 29, 2003 The fastest commenrcially available is the P4 EE (Extreme Edition) 3.2 GHz, but you're lucky if you can even get your hands on a normal 3.2 GHz over here. The 3.06, also only had an FSB of 533MHz, these new ones (Also called P4C) have an 800MHz FSB and support Dual DDR memory making them really quite quick, as I'm discovering!
Guest Muzz Posted September 30, 2003 Report Posted September 30, 2003 Is there a big difference between 533 fsb and 800 fsb ?
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted September 30, 2003 Report Posted September 30, 2003 It's more efficient as you get 267 more clock cycles per second for instructions to be sent from the cpu to other areas (gfx/pci/ide etc). Inceases stability and in general puts less strain on the components (or allows you to put more strain on without compromising stability).
Guest Maverick Posted September 30, 2003 Report Posted September 30, 2003 Only 3 Ghz? .. Heh heh.. Then I guess its too early to upgrade the CPU on my laptop :-)
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted October 1, 2003 Report Posted October 1, 2003 And i'm sure you're loving that 90 minute battery and 24/7 cooling fan ain't you? ;) Give me my 1.4gig silent (no fans) Centrino with a 4 hour battery any day....
Guest siu99spj Posted October 1, 2003 Report Posted October 1, 2003 Is there a big difference between 533 fsb and 800 fsb ? As well as the speed difference, there's also the fact that HT is only available for the 800MHz versions at the moment (Except for the 3.06GHz, worlds first hyperthreaded CPU).
Guest Muzz Posted October 1, 2003 Report Posted October 1, 2003 Check out this link for a stable 4.1 Ghz P4! http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20021216/
