A thrilled first time SPV user :)

Finally recieved my SPV Canary yesterday and I've pretty much handled all the basics straight from the begining, but there's still some stuff I don't quite understand.

For instance, I'm using an Israeli provider called Cellcom so I need to set all the GPRS / CSD / MMS settings manually, I used the smartphone config tool from the cd I got, but it was only for GPRS/CSD (no MMS settings) and I'm not even sure it works...

Let's get my MMS settings up and running, where do I get to those?

woho.. forget about that, my phone just went crazy, it can't log on to the network and I can't get to the network menu, "cannot open settings".

I put it on charging and now it's at least searching for a network and I can get to the menus.. was it because the battery was too weak?!

Triple posting here.. heh.. well I'm trying to help myself, and it seems that charging the phone kinda fixed everything up, I saw in another thread that someone got the "could not load settings" error and you guys told him to hard reset, maybe he should've just charged his phone? ;)

Anyway, network is back again but it shows the MCC + MNC instead of the network name! huh?!

Okay.. I'm kinda tired from talking to myself so let's focus on the big issue here.

I'm losing network connectivity all the time.

The phone just writes "searching" where it's suppose to say the network name, and even when I am connected - the network field contains the MCC + MNC numbers.

What can I do to get my phone to keep being locked on to the network? I have good coverage in my home and this has NEVER been an issue..

Hi there

I dont want to interrupt your conversation with yourself, but you might want to check:

(1) Your SIM is activated

(2) Try another handset with that SIM, sometimes the network does disappear!

(3) Power cycle the phone, but a Hard Reset would be a bit extreme

Dont be afraid to phone Orange either. It might be that your phone is not behaving and they can spank it with SIM updates til it gets in line! ;)

Welcome to MoDaCo BTW

Er, what they then?

What can I do to get my phone to keep being locked on to the network?

Check Programs - Settings - Telephony - Networks

It should tell you the currently selected network, and the Selection mode.

Where are you? In the UK?, and are you with Orange?

I'm in Israel and using the Cellcom network, got the phone yesterday and it worked just fine with my Cellcom SIM inserted, just started making problems a few hours ago.

MCC + MNC = Mobile Country Code + Mobile Network Code which every GSM network in the world has, Israel's Country code is 425 and Cellcom is 02, so it says 42502 instead of "Cellcom".

It works with a SIM from the Israeli Orange service (which has nothing to do with Orange UK, the phone is 100% SIM Unlocked and has worked with Cellcom up until a few hours ago..

I'll try playing around with the "find network options" but as far as I can see, it just gets stuch on "Contacting Network - Downloading settings from the network. . ." and doesn't go anywhere.

Again.. I have some progress.. I tested the phone with another SIM from my provider and it worked.

Costumer services told me there were a few versions of their card and I don't have the latest one.

I believe upgrading the card should do the trick, as the sim I tested was bought a month ago while mine was bought 9 monthes ago.

Problem is, they won't be open till Monday (national holiday) and I'm off to England Sunday afternoon.

I am still quite suprised that everything worked PERFECTLY until it suddenly.. stopped working perfectly ;) still no idea as to what happened so if someone knows what this is all about, please feel free to provide any info, cause I could be mistaken with my entire conclusion.

Sorry for the large amount of messages, but I have been sitting here trying to solve this problem and getting my new and amazing phone to work for at least 7 hours now, it was a terrible day for me.

Thanks.

Hi ranzz

I see you've been having lots of fun with your new SPV ;) It's bad luck on the dodgy SIM m8 :D Are you without a working SIM now or have you managed to borrow one ? If you are still trying to setup the SPV for GPRS/MMS then this is roughly how to go about it. I don't know the specific Cellcom GPRS data and I can't find it on the net so may have to ask Cellcom customer services.

Goto Internet Explorer-Menu-Options-Connections and Tick 'Automatically Detect Settings'

I would first setup the Internet connection but you may have to check with your network provider that you have the Internet/web browsing service activated on your acccount. They should be able to tell you the APN, username & password. DNS server information is not usually needed but can be included.

Programs-Settings-Data Connections

Menu-Edit Connections-GPRS Connections

Menu-Add

Description: Cellcom Internet

Connects to: The Internet

Access point: ?

User name: ?

Password: ?

Primary DNS: ?

Secondary DNS: ?

IP address: (blank)

Goto Programs-Settings-Data Connections

Set 'Internet Connection: CellCom Internet'

You should now be able to access internet (HTML) pages using HTTP.

http://www.modaco.com/mobile

Now create a WAP proxy connection and include the IP address given by your network provider.

Programs-Settings-Data Connections

Menu-Edit Connections-Proxy Connection

Menu-Add

Description: Cellcom WAP proxy

Connects from: The Internet

Connects to: WAP network

Proxy (name:port): ?

Type: WAP

Username: blank

Password: blank

This will give you access to WAP (WML) pages using HTTP.

http://www.google.com/wml

If you don't have the full GPRS Internet Access then you should at least have GPRS WAP access. Again Cellcom should be able to give you the APN, username & password (also needs above WAP proxy connection). Alternatively, you could also extract these details from any GPRS WAP phone.

Programs-Settings-Data Connections

Menu-Edit Connections-GPRS Connections

Menu-Add

Description: Cellcom WAP

Connects to: The Internet

Access point: ?

User name: ?

Password: ?

Primary DNS: (blank)

Secondary DNS: (blank)

IP address: (blank)

Goto Programs-Settings-Data Connections and set 'WAP Connection: CellCom WAP'

This will give you access to WAP (WML) pages using WSP.

wsp://www.google.com/wml

Last but not least is the MMS setup. You will need the APN, username, password, IP address and MMSC address to complete the setup.

Programs-Settings-Data Connections

Menu-Edit Connections-GPRS Connections

Menu-Add

Description : Cellcom MMS

Connects to : MMS Connection (or Orange MMS if SPV)

Access point: ?

User name: ?

Password: ?

Primary DNS: (blank)

Secondary DNS: (blank)

IP address: (blank)

Programs Settings - Accessories - MMS setup

First field: Cellcom GPRS

IP: ?

Port: 9201

Mmsc Address: ?

Thats it

Provided that you can find all the relevent GPRS data which is specific to Cellcom then the SPV should have no problems with any of the GPRS services.

Good luck

Thanks martin. ;)

I was actually already able to use Internet Explorer but I wasn't sure whether I did it using GPRS or CSD! could I tell by the appearence of the G on the top of my screen? since I didn't sign up for a data package yet GPRS is very pricey, CSD would probably be cheaper...

Anyway, I still have my old phone (SGH-R220 after I sold my Nokia 3650 couple of weeks ago) so I'm not phone-less... but as I said, I'm going to England on Sunday and there I'll use the SPV with a local sim...

Hopefully the SIM replacement I'll get after my trip will do the trick, but can you or anyone else explain how it worked and then stopped working?

I'm just dying to here a rational explenation

This will probably be the last update.. the phone actually has some RF with the SIM in, I mean - it says no service but my computer screen is reacting when the phone is under it, just like a phone with good reception..

oh, and now I can't even get to the "SIM Manager" with the SIM in.. looks like the card is slowly dying huh?

poor ranzz

It does seem like your SIM has become corrupted. Look on the bright side m8, at least its not your SPV at fault ;)

Posted

well it is absulutely the bright side, but this causes a great inconvinience leaving Israel and returning with two phones and two chargers.

and it's not exactly a corrupted card, cause it works perfectly on my other phone, it's more like some incompatibility between the card and the phone (which, again - happened all of a sudden without a clear reason).

at least I'm unique..
