Guest Pagemakers Posted September 26, 2003 Report Posted September 26, 2003 Hello Mr O, The Orange GPRS connectivity issue is one of the most debated subjects at the moment. When will GPRS be fixed once and for all? As you can see here (sorry for the cross post): http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewtopic.php...der=asc&start=0 Nearly 70% of your customers have considerable problems connecting. Not just once or twice, but always. It is infuriating and totally unacceptable.gprs.gif
Guest wirefree90 Posted September 26, 2003 Report Posted September 26, 2003 New relaase of code soon ?
Guest Mr Orange Posted September 26, 2003 Report Posted September 26, 2003 We are working on a new radio stack from HTC that will improve the performance of the GSM functionality, this will be in the next release of code for the SPV. I expect this new release to be in 'testing' in the next few weeks and provided it passes all of the internal processes it will then be made available for general release.
Guest SirGaz Posted September 26, 2003 Report Posted September 26, 2003 Not to put a dampener on things but we're still waiting for the last bit of code that was in testing (update 1.6).
Guest Rob.P Posted September 26, 2003 Report Posted September 26, 2003 And in the meantime we could do with a little leanancy on GPRS costs seeing as we are paying for a service that is probably far from target on it's service level agreement, how about another GPRS deal to keep as sweet and not bad mouth Orange to all and sundry.
Guest Mr Orange Posted September 26, 2003 Report Posted September 26, 2003 I'm afraid I don't work for Orange UK or for that matter Orange France and I can't comment on the pricing plans for GPRS in any Orange country. I have heard however that their are discussions about GPRS pricing going on, so it's a case of watch this space.
Guest Rob.P Posted September 26, 2003 Report Posted September 26, 2003 I'm not fussed about GPRS costs in the future, my immediate critism was the fact that Orange are charging for a service that far from meets it consumer objectives regarding reliability and general usage. If someone could point me in the direction of the T&C for the GPRS service and I can then read it and point Ofcom/tel in that direction as well, as they are waiting for more info from me on this subject.
Guest Pagemakers Posted September 28, 2003 Report Posted September 28, 2003 Mr O How about building something into the new software that disconnects and re-dials any GPRS calls that are stuck on the dialling screen for more than say 20 seconds. At the moment it will just stick on dialling until the battery runs out.
Guest drblow Posted September 28, 2003 Report Posted September 28, 2003 The price wouldn't really be a major concern for me, if the dialling issue was sorted once & for all. I don't have a problem with paying for a service which works the way it's supposed to! I think for me the price of gprs is prohibitive to spending much time on it, but that isn't a factor ATM coz I can't ever connect in the first place!! 1 question tho Mr. O - are the 156 & technical support staff aware that the new update is *ahem* imminent *cough* & is supposed to fix all our gprs problems?? They still have an action open for me with tech support about fixing the gprs dialling issue.
Guest morpheus2702 Posted September 28, 2003 Report Posted September 28, 2003 I'd be surprised if the CS team knew it was Sunday today...
Guest martin Posted September 28, 2003 Report Posted September 28, 2003 drblow Ermmm, I'm not sure that Mr Orange said that the new radio stack would fix all the GPRS problems (including stuck dialing). He has only stated that it would improve the GSM functionality. I still believe that this GPRS issue needs to be addressed to Orange UK as it is clearly more to do with the network than the phone. Remember that GPRS hangs on other phones too. I wouldn't close your CS complaint anytime soon
Guest Pagemakers Posted September 28, 2003 Report Posted September 28, 2003 Still waiting for my 72 hour call back from CS and its been ten days! Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest drblow Posted September 28, 2003 Report Posted September 28, 2003 there was an element of tongue in cheek in my post regarding a total fix of gprs! infact, i find it disconcerting that the response from mr. o, when asked directly about gprs, failed to actually mention gprs - just gsm & radio stack! neatly avoided i think! a job in the cabinet awaits! ;) Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest martin Posted September 29, 2003 Report Posted September 29, 2003 Pagemaker said Still waiting for my 72 hour call back from CS and its been ten days!Yes but they didn't say which 72 hour period they would call you back in. I think your designated 72 hours starts a week on Tuesday  drblow saidi find it disconcerting that the response from mr. o, when asked directly about gprs, failed to actually mention gprs - just gsm & radio stack! neatly avoided i think! a job in the cabinet awaits! Writing in an official capacity is surely an art
Guest drblow Posted September 30, 2003 Report Posted September 30, 2003 I actually spoke to someone real in tech support today!! Dunno how it happened? On my usual daily routine of - wake up, go to work, phone CS to complain about gprs not working ... I was just randomly giving off at a supervisor who said they would get someone to call me back (I laughed & said, yeah, I'll be holding my breath from now) about 20 mins later, this fella calls me saying he's from tech support!! Imagine my suprise when he said that he wanted me to check my settings!! I told him I had the correct dns numbers, correct colour pants on for a tuesday, & had aligned myself with the shadow of jupiter on the moons surface! But he insisted that it would work, which of course to my great amusement, it didn't!! In the end he admitted that he/tech support have no idea why gprs gets stuck at dialling. He reckons it's a handset problem, something to do with the browser not communicating properly with the radio stack, or the footbone not connecting with your facebone, or something! ;) He said he would pass his comments on to 156, who really have no option now but to replace my handset!! Now then, whens that e200 coming out??????
Guest Pagemakers Posted September 30, 2003 Report Posted September 30, 2003 Personally, I always thought the phone had something to do with the problems.
Guest matth Posted October 7, 2003 Report Posted October 7, 2003 Hello chaps. I find that the best way to get a GPRS connection is to connect to the Orange football live scores homepage and move on from there :- More often than the phone will dial out and connect. Address is : http://spv.orange-today.co.uk/sport/soccer...ball.livescores works for me! ta matth
Guest rob_pearse Posted October 7, 2003 Report Posted October 7, 2003 I just find it annoying that a GPRS "always on" connection is not! Or have I got the wrong idea about GPRS? I thought you were always connected so should be able to get to a page pretty quick. Most of the time I seem to connect, but it does take anywhere between 5 seconds (rare!) and a minute (more likely)!
Guest morpheus2702 Posted October 7, 2003 Report Posted October 7, 2003 Welcome to the bo*****ks that is Orange GPRS!
Guest rob_pearse Posted October 7, 2003 Report Posted October 7, 2003 So this isn't just an SPV problem? I've not seen any other mention of GPRS being slow to connect on other non-SPV sites.
Guest morpheus2702 Posted October 7, 2003 Report Posted October 7, 2003 I haven't seen any comment on Modaco that relates to Orange GPRS being good or bad on other makes of phone...
Guest beersoft Posted October 7, 2003 Report Posted October 7, 2003 do you know any other phone where using gprs is as 'fun' or a big a 'feature' [insert rant about crappy gprs services] i think gprs sucked on my 6310 with ir link to the pocketpcolove, it thought about connecting most times but died after about 3k, might be gprs related or the evil that is t-mobile. without the pant/beard/coffe analisys its 20% crappy grps as a concept 20% orange turning of cells randomly and 60% bugs in the radio stack later Owen "i know, lets change the ip range for the lan today, it will only take 2 ticks" - a bad idea if ever i heard one
Guest Pagemakers Posted October 9, 2003 Report Posted October 9, 2003 Just back from Spain and GPRS connectivity was crap there too and I was using my newly replaced e100. I AM CONVINCED that there is a flaw within the phone itself.
