Laptop / Infrared / Activesync and Modem problem

I'm having problems getting my spv connected to my laptop. Originally I wanted to use the phone as a modem over IR, and when that failed, I tried using activesync over the IR and cannot get that to detect the device.

I'm using windows 2000 and it can detect the phone ok through wireless link, but does not recognise it as a standard modem over IR and neither will it detect it through activesync.

Has anyone else had this problem or found any solutions?

PS - I've run through Microsoft's troubleshooter upto the point there it links you to the win 2k hardware troubleshooter - which has been removed!

Any help is greatly appreciated as I have to go to the middle of nowhere tomorrow!

Just some more info - The phone connects fine with a USB cable and when the "Your Device was not detected" screen it says that all the com, infrared and USB ports are available

Did you plug the phone into the PC before insalling Activsync?

No...plugged it in after. I installed it then tried to get it connect via IR only. Is that te prefered method rather than installing via USB first?

I followed those directions but the step which says:

4. Windows XP will automaticall install (NO DRIVERS REQUIRED!) a Modem called

Standard Modem over IRLINK will be added (A sound will eventually indicate this!)

is the bit that doesn't seem to happen. Is there a driver required for the SPV or something for the laptop that I'm missing? Like I said before, I have a Wireless Link (with win2k) so connectivity isn't a problem, therefore I'm leaning towards a driver issue?

But beyond that I'm soooooo lost!

Right!

The modem works with USB fine. Just tested that, but the IR is still a mystery. Is there an issue with win 2k that anyone is aware of with Wireless link?

This is soooooo annoying
